RUMOR: Apple discontinuing Magic Mouse in favor of Magic Trackpad

“We’ve gotten word from a previously reliable source that Apple is discontinuing the Magic Mouse in favor of the Magic Trackpad,” Alex Heath reports for Cult of Mac.

“Our retail source has informed us that Magic Mouse inventory is not being replenished for Apple stores, and that Apple is finally phasing out the Magic Mouse,” Heath reports. “In OS X Lion, Apple focused heavily on gestures. To take full advantage of Lion’s speed and efficiency, a trackpad must be used that works with the intuitive gestures Apple has implemented.”

Heath reports, “It makes sense that Apple would phase out the Magic Mouse, as OS X is clearly becoming a gesture based OS.”

    1. You can play them with the magic mouse?

I love the trackpad, but I use a Logitech mouse for the normal day to day stuff and games. I couldn’t adjust to using the MM for games.
the Magic Mouse is good, but i’ll keep my two as backups.

Logitech mouse, and my Trackpad attached to my Apple Wireless Keyboard. I’m set.

  1. They are all flawed in some way. Apple sort of has a love/hate thing with mice as if deep down they never really liked them.
There hasn’t been a true professional grade mouse ever made by Apple. Hockey Puck anyone? The Mighty Mouse must be turned upside down and scrolled around for a few seconds on white paper in order for it to continue to permit scrolling, the Magic Mouse plays absolute havoc with any page layout or design software scrolling pages by itself and moving frames so frequently (under snow leopard and under Lion…oh…my….gawd…it’s just laughably bad). The magic trackpad is not a professional tool in any sense since ANY inadvertent gesture can send your system off with windows moving, files opening, and a number of other things…don’t rest two fingers on it..EVER…in fact don’t rest your hand even near it…Yes…you can get used to it and use it…but even then, the nature of gestural control suggests that you as the user will never make even the tiniest mistake with your finger position. It’s not a professional tool for accomplishing real work. It’s a fun toy for play.

I have several Apple mice and have been using them back into the late 80’s…they were all weak in some fashion…(remember the ADB port? jeez) There are other mice out there that will work. Apple’s path here is a narrow and not necessarily well crafted one.

  2. NO! I like both, but the Magic Trackpad is not the best for spreadsheets and several other things. It’s great for Photos and things like that. Say it isn’t so!!!!

MDN – Start a Poll and let Apple know!

  3. What a shame. Apple finally makes a decent, usable mouse that seems to hold up pretty well and they can it. The Magic Mouse is the closest thing to a perfect mouse IMO… I went through a ton of alternatives before they released it. It’s full-sized, but stows easily in a laptop bag, fits in with the aesthetic qualities of the Mac and is made from superior materials. It has nice weight and motion to it too. If this is true, I’ll be bummed when/if my current Magic Mouse dies.

  4. I have the Track pad and love it for use in iPhoto, but on my iMac when I click on an item and try to drag it from the far right to the far left of the screen i am luck to get half way then I ether have to put a finger from my other hand on the track pad and move my hand back to the right or drop the object and try again. For this reason I use a Logitech TrackMan Wheel (Unlimited dragging) as my primary device and the track pad to do gestures.

  5. Crap!
Mighty Mouse maybe, no way are going to do that. The Magic mouse works beautifully with lion. Even if the trackpad provides further interaction through gestures, the mouse is still obviously superior for many tasks, especially in Pro worlds, there is no gain for Apple here. I call ridiculous.

  6. I LOVE my Magic Mouse. I NEED it for the precise control that I get when making selections in apps like photoshop. I also Love my magic trackpad, but if they made me choose just one, it would be the magic mouse.. Hopefully, it will last forever, otherwise I’ll have to go back to my other beloved mouse, the logitech revolution, which had ‘most’ of the same functions, but required about 9 different buttons to attain.
