Netflix increases prices, changes DVD and streaming plans

“Say goodbye to that free, unlimited Netflix streaming with your DVD rental plan,” Chloe Albanesius reports for PC Magazine. “The company on Tuesday announced new pricing plans that separate options for DVD rentals and Watch Instantly streaming.”

“Going forward, access to unlimited Netflix streaming will cost $7.99 per month, as will its unlimited, one DVD at a time plan,” Albanesius reports. “Together, one DVD and unlimited streaming will cost $15.98 per month.”

  1. Yeah, this price increase is rough and we won’t stand for it! Try your little sob stories on us now, starving third world babies!

(tongue firmly in cheek to point out how totally messed up our since of entitlement really is. Get a grip, people).

  2. I received the news of the program change, the second in my very short membership. This is the second price increase and a program change that I am not willing to accept, so I cancelled my subscription! I am done with Netflix!

  3. Actually, I am getting more now for a buck more than I was paying before!

We have a TERRIBLE ISP that provides such unreliable broadband service that we have never been able to stream anything from Netflix without huge amounts of pausing and buffering, so the streaming portion of my previous plan was totally useless to me.

I was on the 4 DVDs at a time including Blu-Ray. Yesterday I changed to the 5 DVDs at a time including Blu-Ray with no streaming for one dollar more than I was paying before.

If I was a heavy user of the streaming service I am sure I would have the complete opposite reaction, but for those who rely on the DVD mailer for 100% of their useage, this is not bad at all! :o)

  4. Thought I would put my 2¢ in…
I am dumping the the DVD service and keeping the streaming. They are entitled to charge what they want for their service and I am entitled to buy or not buy it based on how much I value that product.
I, like some others, calculate that I can only get 8 movies a month (2 per week, if I do everything like clockwork). On the other hand I can hit one of the the local Redbox’s on a whim (i.e. hey lets watch “xyz” tonight) for DVD’s for $1/movie and not pay anything if I don’t watch anything. (as long as I take them back the next day) (and also have the option to pick up 2 movies if we don’t want to watch a family movie (one for the kids))

BTW: I think Apple really needs to turn the screws on the studio’s & distributers to match (on iTunes) the ($1) standard def (DVD) movie rentals available in vending machines like Redbox. It has to be cheaper (more money for studios) to maintain a streaming service than it is to run & stock DVD vending machines.

  5. I was already looking to cut costs in our monthly budget. I didn’t want to give up Netflix because I do use it, but for the plan I was on the price almost doubled. So this was a no brainer for me I have already canceled. To raise the cost but not the service value just wasn’t worth it to me.

  6. I’ve never had more than 2 DVD’s out in any month, so for me, the solution is simple: have one account that subscribes to “Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs)” for 7.99 and another account that subscribes to the Limited Plan – “1 DVD out at-a-time (limit 2 rentals a month)” for 4.99. Total cost: 12.98

    1. do they still offer those plans?

I thought they went to the stream only for $8 and the 1 at a time DVD was the base price..

Still i’ll keep the streaming only, already made a reminder in iCal to drop my DVD part a week before the 9-1 price change. Also redid my netflix queue last night. I have 7-9 movies left now. hope i can get them in time to add them to my library. then netflix DVD’s are done.

Redbox for what i can’t stream.
or the local DVD rental store down the street, I can rent Blu ray for $3 if i return it the next day and they are on the way to work so i never have an issue with that.

  7. I have both at this point with 2 DVDs split between my girlfriend and I and the streaming. My price doesn’t increase until my billing statement in September. Prior to that, I’ll be canceling the DVD part and trying out the streaming. If they continue to have old crap on there I’ll cancel it completely. They do have stuff I watch and watched all of 24 on there as I never watched it when on TV. I just wish they would have better stuff on streaming and apparently that’s going to happen…fingers crossed. I also hated how they would take a month after a movie is released to have it available on DVD.
