Growl coming to the Mac App Store as a full application

“Growl is one of my favorite things about the Mac platform — it’s a notification service whose customization and power is unmatched on anything I’ve seen in other operating systems,” Mike Schramm reports for TUAW. “And it’s going through some changes in the near future: Project Lead Christopher Forsythe has posted on the Growl Google Group that as of version 1.3, Growl will move from a notification service into a full app, mainly to be included in the actual Mac App Store.”

Schramm reports, “That has quite a few ramifications, both good and bad. The first is that Growl will be able to take advantage of everything the App Store offers, including ease of installation and upgrades, as well as discovery and any future features planned for Mac App Store apps. But the flip side is that anything the Mac App Store doesn’t allow obviously won’t be allowed in Growl, so those services (which currently include GrowlMail and GrowlSafari) will be retired completely. This also means that Growl will become an app only for OS 10.7+, so 10.6 (Snow Leopard, the current version) and earlier will not be officially supported.”

  1. What the heck does Growl do? I never know what it does despite seeing it mentioned quite a lot in Mac forums. In what sense does it add to Mac notifications? I get a ding and a badge on the Mail.app every time I receive new mail so I can’t see what Growl does that would give me more information.

    1. Legit question.

I thought of answering, but the easiest thing is download it, try it, and if you still think it’s useless, delete it. No harm done, no $$ spent.

Especially useful for me now that so many apps are compartmentalized using Spaces, but your milage may vary.

      1. Tea… The most self conflicted consumable known to man…

Boil water … make it hot.
Put Ice into it … make it cold
Strain it (to get any and all leaves, sediment, etc. out) … make it clear
Put milk into it … make it cloudy
Put sugar into it … make it sweet
Put lemon itno it … make it sour
        etc.
        etc.
        etc.

  2. My mother, Bless her departed soul, being English, was a heavy tea drinker. Those single Lipton tea bags were purchased in bulk! Tea in the morning, tea at work, tea with dinner, tea before bed. And every time, a little dab of milk was added. And although she lived in America for the 2/3rd of her life, she was always a citizen of the English Crown. No Naturalization for her.

Oh, and those that say milk in hot tea yuck. Have you tried it?

Oh and my mother could never understand ice tea. First you take hot tea, then add ice to it. Then you sweeten with sugar, only to add a little lemon juice?! (she shakes head)…

    1. The beauty of iced tea as opposed to steaming hot tea is that it slakes your thirst more as you can quaff a higher quantity of it down in a shorter period of time without burning your throat.

But it rather depends on the time of year. If I’m freezing my rocks off under some hole in the middle of winter I don’t find the idea of iced tea all that appealing.

Enjoy your tea with a twist of lime or lemon as you please. As for sugar you can alway try adding the brown stuff – it’s supposed to cause less harm than the white stuff.

    2. A little off topic, but the way your mother (bless her) feels about ice tea is the same way I feel about iced coffee. I’ve known some Aussies, and they’re terrific folk. And most feel the same way as your mum about iced tea. But iced coffee has to be one of the most vile drinks on the planet no matter what you pollute with. Guess it all boils down to personal taste. No offense meant to my Aussie friends.

  3. I am using Growl together with Boxcar to get notifications from all kinds of applications on my iMac to my iPhone and iPad. Very practical.
Didn’t get the idea with Growl before that. To bad with GrowlMail going away though.

    1. I never used growlmail myself.
I wonder if you can still use it with Lion.

Just downloaded all the current Growl installs for future use just in case they disappear when 10.7 version comes out. I still need growl on my old PowerMac.

  4. “But the flip side is that anything the Mac App Store doesn’t allow obviously won’t be allowed in Growl, so those services (which currently include GrowlMail and GrowlSafari) will be retired completely.”

I SERIOUSLY doubt that would be allowed to happen. It would be gutting the point of having Growl in the first place. It would be self-destruction. The Growl becomes a kitty mew.

We shall see what the new beast will really be like within a short time…
