Multiple MacDailyNews readers have informed us that Verizon Wireless has slashed prices on Android phones across the board:

MacDailyNews Take: Successful platforms do not need to have prices slashed and perpetual BOGOF promotions.
The fact is: Apple’s iPhone [3GS] costs just [$49] and the [iPhone 4] goes for only $199 in the U.S. with a 2-year plan… As Apple’s iPhone expands onto more and more carriers, Android’s only real selling point (“I’m stuck on Verizon or some other carrier that doesn’t offer the iPhone”) evaporates. – SteveJack, MacDailyNews, December 23, 2009
[Thanks to MacDailyNews readers too numerous to mention individually for the heads up.]
iDROID vs iPhone
iZune vs iPod
iXoom vs iPad
Let the bloodbath begin.
At this point, anyone buying a $0 with contract Droid simply can’t do math. Currently, with Verizon, you must spend $70 per month on ANY smartphone, even the $0 ones.
AT&T offers an iPhone starting at $50 (3GS), or $200 (iP4), but the cheapest plan is only $55. So:
iPhone 4 plus plan (2-year cost): $1,520
Android (free) plus plan (2-year): $1,680.
So, by far the cheapest smartphone out there (handset plus plan) is the iPhone; even the most expensive iPhone 4 can be had for less than the least expensive Android, over 2 years.
excellent post
Sharp consumers buy what works! And they don’t complain.kl
Lamers look at cost as the deciding factor. A fool and his money is soon parted.
Yeah, MDN!! Your take made another page.
MacDaily’s[sic] opinion is, “Successful platforms do not need to have prices slashed and perpetual BOGOF [buy one, get one free] promotions.”
Ouch.

Dear Abbey,
I have a friend who had an iPhone and switched to a DROID and says he likes it better than the iPhone and that it is problem free. His girlfrend has an iPhone. She also has an iPad but he didn’t like it and got a Galaxy tab which he claims is as good and as fast as the iPad.
What should I do?
Dear Buster
Get an iPhone and and iPad and steal his girlfriend. She obviously doesn’t deserve a cheap clueless jerk like him….
ROFL! Great advice!
Has anyone tried to verify this deal? I’m visiting Verizon and my prices are tremendously different.
They are slashing old models to make room for new models… Apple and AT&T did the same with iPhone 3GS – new and refurbs! If Apple had 4 models selling and a new one came out the same would happen to those 4. iPad just got reduced because iPad 2 is coming out.
The phones on sale are all old models… making way for the new Androids!
Apple just reduced the iPad pricing by 100$… “Apple offers $100 refund on recent iPad purchases.”
Retailers/companies do this to clear inventory…
On the flip side… Android is now the largest OS in America… Android at 32% and Apple at 24% (Apple has not grown in the last year…) trouble ahead for Apple! 😉
@ John and Marco
I can’t decide wether to laugh at you or shake my head in sadness……
And so it begins…
Apple and many other companies including AT&T do the same on older stock models to clear them out… this just in…
… now AT&T slashes prices on original iPads, too!
Following in Apple’s footsteps, AT&T has reduced the price of original iPad models by $100 online and in its retail locations. A 16GB iPad will now retail for $529, 32GB for $629 and 64GB for $729.”
That’s all folks… every company does it… not just Verizon or Google partner phones…
