Apple removes Nazi anthem from iTunes Store Germany

“Apple removed a notorious anthem of the Nazi Party from the German version of its iTunes online music store on Wednesday,” Eric Kelsey reports for Reuters.

“Named after a young party activist killed in 1930, the marching song ‘Horst Wessel Lied,’ was the unofficial anthem of the Nazis until it was banned in Germany at the end of World War Two,” Kelsey reports. “The Apple spokesman said it had been taken off iTunes but did not say if other Nazi-era songs had also been removed.”

Kelsey reports, “The Apple spokesman said the anthem had taken off iTunes, but did not say if other songs popular with neo-Nazis in Germany had also been removed.”

  1. Ah, the glorious Nazi anthem. How does it go, again?

Vhen der Fuhrer says “Ve are der master race!”
Then ve heil (HEIL!) heil (HEIL!) right in der Fuhrer’s face!
Not to love der Fuhrer would be a big disgrace,
So ve heil (HEIL!) heil (HEIL!) right in der Fuhrer’s face!

  2. >ObeyTheFist, the Nazis were socialists, leftists.
The people at Fox News are conservatives, not the same thing.
    Read your history.<

Not according to my pinko old uncle.
I suggest you read your history too.

I take it you can actually read.

  3. @Mr. Tuttle,
Sorry to bust your bubble, but the Nazis were right-wingers, just like you (apparently). Every historian (well, except professor Glenn Beck) in the world will tell you that.

You’re and people like you are proof positive that the US education system needs a serious overhaul.

Perhaps some further reading is required by the ignorant masses?

When your nations corporations and government become one, either institutionally or otherwise, you become a fascist state. Especially characterized by overt nationalism and warmongering.

Americas politicos and CEOs are commingling to such a degree which could, to a dispassionate observer, be seen as a proto-fascist state. Hail Bush, hail Haliburton, hail Obama, hail GE.

Left or right is not really a concern so much as a distraction to keep the poor from sussing out the rich will do all they need to to enforce a social strata which is entirely biased towards them.

The man next to you is your brother.

  5. Then ban all the Zionist songs as well. They are ten times worse than the Nazis ever were and thousands of YouTube videos prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Oh geez I almost forgot…..we can’t say anything negative about Israel, now can we?

  6. @Mr. Tuttle

Strange, when NSAP came to power they got their votes from the middle and right, not from the left. Or are you saying that the middle and right voters suddenly went left?

  7. @Backlash

Of course I did. FYI visiting Germany doesn’t make you an expert on anything. I GUARANTEE you that any German would laugh in your (or any American conservative’s) face if you came to them with the notion that Hitler and the Nazis were leftists. That simply flies in the face of reality and historical fact.

The sad thing is, the US has probably the most comprehensive exhibits on Hitler, Nazis and their right-wing agenda (including a very fascinating -and disturbing- display of how the Nazi propaganda machine worked) at the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, yet every conservative I’ve ever observed at the museum are completely oblivious to the parallels between what the Nazis did back then and what their conservative heroes Beck, Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Hannity, Levin, Savage, etc. are doing today.

Getting people to live in denial, demonizing your political opponents with negative -and often violent (directly or indirectly)- rhetoric, promoting ignorance as a virtue, and rewriting (or reinterpreting) historical facts were all hallmarks of Nazi propaganda and are tactics that are being used to great effect by conservative media figures and politicians in the US today.

People (like yourself, unfortunately) who believe that the Nazis were leftists / liberals / socialists are a prime example of this.

  8. Funny how the Nazi party suddenly is being labeled as left-wing (communists) after commonly being accepted as right-wing (fascists) by republicans and democrats alike for 50 years that followed WII.

FOX News is trying to rewrite history.

Leftists (communists) during that time didn’t believe in private property. The Right (Fascists) like the Nazis were big on private enterprise and corporations.

  9. First, like anything in this world, definitions change with time, as do the context of the terms.

What defined the Nazi movement in the 30’s and 40’s was it’s attempted genocide, and the murders of millions. They might have been fascists, socialists or social democrats, or some bastardization of the terms – it simply does not matter. They were Nazis – they killed millions for their social, political, and economic ambitions – and seemingly had little moral restraint while doing so.

Similarly, the former Soviet Union cannot simply be called communist – they were Leninist and Stalinist – bastardizations of true pure communism, which again was a bastardization of Marxism.

By the same measure, our little representative democratic republic is far from a pure democracy and far from being truly representative, and barely a republic – if we try to apply these terms vigorously.

  10. What’s really wacky is that Leftist’s here are trying to play a game of “your guy is worse than ours”.

For the blindly stupid progressives that wish to tread down that path?

Joseph Stalin. Left as hell. Murdered MILLIONS more than Hitler.

Communist China. Left as hell. Murdered MILLIONS more than Hitler.

    You want more?

Pol Pot. I can go on and on and on and on about murderous Leftists, care to take that bet?

  11. Moo: I haven’t seen anyone here claiming that the communist equivalents of the Nazis aren’t bad guys. In fact, I see several commenters claiming that communism is a leftist philosophy as they correct the ignorant claim that fascism is leftist. You right wingers, under the corporate direction of News Corp, have embraced this false claim, this rewriting of history, over the past 3 or 4 years with a hungry fervor. It’s ironic that you don’t see how much like the Nazis you all are.

All political philosophy talk aside, in America, who do the Neonazis vote for? Republican candidates. Under which party’s banner do they run for office? The GOP. Where do they live? Red states. Nazis are on the right. If you can’t understand this, I should dismiss you as an ignorant, partisan, automaton and stop arguing with you.

  12. @Mark S.: What part of National Socialist Workers Party don’t you people don’t get?

    Right wing?

    Get real!

Re-read my first response to you. I was called out on my “attitude”, but obviously it was too moderate a response to your wanton ignorance and blatant denial of reality.

Let me rephrase it so you’ll understand: By your twisted logic North Korea is democratic, because they include it in their official (translated) name, i.e. “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”

Reality: actions speak louder than words. No matter what they called themselves to get into power, at their peak and fall they were extreme right-wing.

You’re in their half of the political spectrum. Get used to it and enjoy the company.

  13. Take a look at Jerry Pournelle’s 2-axis view of political systems; it does a MUCH better job differentiating between, say Facism and Communism which both appear to behave very similarly but are radically opposed.
