Acer chief: Our tablets will overtake Apple’s iPad

Apple Online Store“You certainly can’t accuse Acer’s top suit Gianfranco Lanci of lacking ambition. Having outed two new Android tablets, a smartphone/tablet hybrid and a new Windows effort this week, he reckons his company can take Apple’s tablet top spot within two to three years,” Joe Minihane reports for T3.

MacDailyNews Take: iCal’ed with gusto.

Minihane reports, “Speaking to Digitimes, Lanci was in bullish mood. ‘Sales of iPad pushed forward very fast initially, but have slowed down in the past few weeks,’ he said. However, there’s no proof that the latter is the case, with Apple having sold around 7.5 million since its launch in April.”

MacDailyNews Take: Proof, who needs proof when you’re the head of a plastic junk assembler?

Minihane reports, “Warming to his theme, Lanci said, ‘We hope our tablet PCs can reach a global market share of 10-20% initially, and become the market leader in two to three years.’ That’s mighty ambitious seeing as Acer’s tablets aren’t even due to go on sale until April next year, by which point the iPad 2 will probably be on shelves.”

  1. Even in the announcement, they reveal why the will ultimately fail: they’re releasing both Android and Windows pads. This inability to choose an focus creates a fragmented market within the same vendor (Acer). If they lack the confidence to throw their full weight behind a single product, then they never will come close to winning.

  2. That’s Mighty Ambitious considering Apple doesn’t care about market share, per se, they care about PROFIT SHARE.

I’m sure Acer can pump out some $49 tablets just to get the unit market share crown.. Good job guys.

  3. Sounds like Ron Whatsisname from Real/Napster. You remember him? The guy with the donut in his mouth? I can’t remember the name of their MP3 player, but it was going to bury the iPod. BTW, how are they doing these days? Anybody know?………or care?

  4. the competition is good. I hope that one of these companies give apple a run for their money as they will need to loosen the grip they have on customers to compete. No company should require a persons credit card deets in order to put files on their device…. 1984 styleee.

It may also give you goons up a reality check

  5. As usual these stupid manufacturers just rush in to the space without a plan. They will end up fighting with each other over Market share with price and volume that will result in junk.

But as always. What ever the other players do, what Market share they get and even if they over take Apple in volume it does not matter. iPad will still be the device to beat and iPad will get the majority of the profits in this space.
