Apple releases iOS 4.0.2, 3.2.2; corrects PDF exploit

Apple today released iOS 4.0.2 for the iPhone and iPod touch and iOS 3.2.2 for the iPad.

The updates correct a PDF exploit found in Mobile Safari that was recently used by hackers to “jailbreak” the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

iOS 4.0.2 is available for the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and 2G and 3G iPod touch models. The iOS 3.2.2 update is available for all iPad models.

To update, simply connect your device to your computer, click on the device in iTunes, and click “Check for Updates.”

  1. Calm down people. This is 4.0.2, not 4.1 which is in beta. This update was ONLY intended to fix the PDF exploit. Apple didn’t want to wait until 4.1 to patch the PDF exploit.

If you have no interest in jailbreaking, go ahead and update to 4.0.2, but don’t expect anything but the PDF exploit to be gone.

If you do want a jailbroken iPhone, or already have one and want to keep it jailbroken, don’t upgrade to 4.0.2. Instead, after you jailbreak, patch the PDF exploit, and for even more security over a default iPhone, change the root and mobile passwords.

The good news for jailbreakers is that…we all knew Apple was going to patch this exploit sooner rather than later. It would’ve been incredibly foolish for them not to. But…while they fixed the flaw in the PDF implementation, they didn’t fix what the code actually does to jailbreak the iPhone. So expect to see old school style jailbreaking tools soon.

  2. There has got to be a better way to patch or do minor iPhone updates. It is absurd that I need to download a 579.3 MB iOS update.

Might annoy me a little less if Charter actually delivered DL speeds they promise ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  3. Where is the proximity sensor fix already?!?!? Its a good thing I hardly use it as a phone held up to my face. I mostly use it hands free in the car. I tried to talk on it last night and it was totally and completely useless.

  4. Since people mentioned the Proximity Sensor …

    Here’s my experiences:

    – Randomly initiates FaceTime call
    – Randomly mutes the call
    – Randomly puts call on hold
    – Randomly dials another number to create conference call

…. and iPhone 4 SUCKS with a MicroCell. Only workaround is to disable Cellular data. Then it works fine (like all 3Gs do) but then you can’t receive voice mails.

    So – here’s my workflow:

When at Home – disable cellular data so you can actually use the phone.
Apologize to caller, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to …
    A. Hang up on you.
    B. Start a conference call etc etc etc.

    When driving:
Disable 3G because it drop calls faster than Ballmer can scream developers.
Enable Celluar data because now I’m not on a MicroCell.

If I was my Mom, my wife, my sister – ok – pretty much anybody else that I know – I’d return this fuckin thing for a 3Gs.

Antennae issue is overblown “MY ASS”.

(Disclaimer: I’ve owned every iPhone. I got mine right after Jobs)

  5. can’t even get it to load (as an upgrade for my 16gb 3G to iOS4). says it’s backing up (even though i already backed it up) and it is running for eeeeeeeeeeever. i took all my music, movies, tv shows and pictures off so i have 14+gb free. after an hour the progress bar had moved about 1/8 inch. what a piece of crap. gave up. guess it’s apple’s way to strong arm me into getting a IP4. not on your life stevie.

With out the patch, you iPhone can do a lot more than run Face Time over 3G, it can alos run a remote exploit that allows root access and arbitrary code execution. Weeeee! Have fun when your back account is wiped out, like the story about Windows this morning. But you can Face Chat. LOL.

  7. IPhoner,

I have not experienced the things you have, but I cannot use my 4 with the Bluetooth of my Acura TL. Something that used to work very well with the previos version of iOS, but that is now useless in version 4.

  8. Pulled that 579.3 MB upgrade down from Apple at 25.2 Mb/sec. Akamai + FIOS rocks!!! Took about 3 minutes.

If you read the messages, it contacts the iPhone Activation Server during the install…guess that means our jail-breaking brethern aren’t getting this patch unless they wipe, reinstall and rebreak.

No change in snappiness, which is already quite snappy.
