Report: Apple to hold special event in mid-September

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“According to several sources and as has been widely expected, Apple will once again be holding its annual special event, possibly closer to mid-September this time,” Kara Swisher reports for AllThingsD.

“Because it is Apple, speculation is running high about what the iconic tech company will unveil next,” Swisher reports. “And most of it centers around the blinging of the iPod Touch to bring it into line with many of the features on the iPhone.”

“That is likely to include a front- and rear-facing camera, which would allow the device to use FaceTime, Apple video-calling software that works over Wi-Fi,” Swisher reports. “There could also be an A4 processor in the iPod, which will give the even more oomph.”

Swisher reports, “Other rumors run the gamut, such as a new cloud-based, streamy rethink of Apple TV (possible and exciting), a smaller iPad (silly and unlikely) and a streaming music service (useful and most likely).”

  1. New iPod touch, yes.
    New AppleTV, mmmm maybe,
7 inch iPad, no way in hell, never, ever.
There will be NO change in the iPad hardware, but the arrival of iOS4 will be announced for the iPad.
There will be a “one more thing.” It will be a surprise.

Any iPhone-related updates will be not be part of the September event. This one is usually focused on iPods and entertainment services. Apple TV is definitely in the picture too, assuming there is something new. It is highly unlikely that there will be anything new for iPad.

While an iPod touch with an A4 and Retina Display are exciting, I’m most curious about what’s next for iPod nano. What more can Apple do to it, in its current general design? The next iPod nano many be something completely different.

  3. Hey Apple, can u Puleeeeeeeeeeeze upgrade the iPod Classic, with Better Audio at Least give us Something in the Vein of
(Dolby Mobile) Because thats My only Problem with Apple’s Portable Media Players. “The Sound Sucks” in Comparison with my “Sony Walkman” Minidisc Players, and i have had a Couple different Models, so i can Attest to Great Portable Audio.
As a matter of fact, No one even comes close to “Sony” when it comes to Audio, “No One”

It’s an event to refresh Apple’s popular “holiday season” products, not the WWDC keynote address. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

I don’t think Apple will give iPod Classic very much more attention. If there’s a single-platter (thin) 1.8-inch hard drive larger than 160GB from Toshiba (such as 200GB), it may get that type of upgrade. Or it may be cancelled.

  5. iPods
iPad OS 4.1 (I think they’ll skip 4.0 for the iPad)
    iPhone/iPod touch OS 4.1
    iLife 11
    iWork 11

iLife will include a new piece of software for HTML 5 code creation and editing – designed to work with iWeb, of course.

  6. I think it is a safe bet that iPod Classic will be gone from the line-up. If you really, really want one, get yours now (or while closeouts/refurbs last).

Solid-state memory seems to be ramping up capacity at decent prices, so we should be able to expect a 128GB touch at this announcement, given that they’ve been doubling the capacity every year for the past three years.

    You haven’t a clue.

The days of Sony producing good audio have long gone, even their Pro Audio gear is not what it used to be though still pretty good.

The iPod Classic’s frequency response and other audio specs blow any Sony consumer audio product specs. Import your CDs into iTunes at a 16 bit 441.Khz resolution and output your audio from your iPod through the dock connector using line level signal as opposed to a noisy headphone out signal which degrades the audio and is not intended as a feed to anything but headphones.

You will then get great audio that will only be realized to it’s full potential as amplified through a good audio chain: One consisting of a stand alone ( not integrated) pre amp, power amp and a good pair of real speakers.

Hey There, Don’t u Dare Question my Integrity When it comes to Audio, or shall we say Music.

(Let me give u some History)
I have been Playing Music, and touring Internationally since 1982 Playing Guitar, Singing, Producing, Arranging, Composing, Directing, and Writing Songs for a Living, and if there is one thing that The other Band Members always Credit me for is my Aural Gift.
The Average Human being u see walking the Streets do not have The Hearing ability that i have, and that includes You, Trust me on that One.
If u read Comments from Most of the Folks that write about the iPod weaknesses, Most will tell u that it’s the Audio, and they think Apple should Put much more effort into Giving us a Better Listening Experience, so don’t u Dare tell me that i am Ignorant, and i do not Know of What i Espouse.

    And @YoYo,
I do not want to carry any Extra Devices.
I Travel a Lot and i Just wanna Take my iPod and My Headphones, My dearly Loved “Shure SE530’s” with me.

(Come on Steve Jobs, Make me Happy) Puleeeeeeze

  9. @Rizzior,

I play too and I’m not saying that I have Doggie hearing, but I can tell you that if you convert your songs to Apple Lossless and run it through the dock connector you will get sound superior to CD quality. I have this set up at home and in my car and it was the only way that I would have accepted converting my library to a digital one.

The files are akin to a wave file in size, but the accuracy is there.

Now, if you are talking about the headphone jack, remember that the engineers at Apple designed the ipod to play through specific headphones. So the bass reproduction is less.

Although I have stated the above, Apple lossless does pale in comparison to FLAC, which I find superior to almost anything that I have ever heard.

    ..just saying.

  10. R:

    You are mistaken:

Apple lossless is compressed at a 2:1 ratio. It is not better than Wav of AIFF files which are the industry standard. That is a fact. All Retail CDs are all mastered @ 16 bit 44.1 kHz. This is the industry standard. So if you import at anything less than that to iTunes or otherwise ( like Apple Lossless) you are degrading your audio. You cannot get better than that. ( Unless you record at 48 or 96Khz in 24 bit r higher, which is not practical for final mastering product).

The old adage of “garbage in =garbage out applies here too : if you start with and inferior audio product even if you convert to 441.kHz @16 bit you will not improve the quality.

auramac: Might make more sense to you, but you are obviously not the aurasonic I mistook you for and are too mistaken.

  11. The iPod Classic doesn’t make anymore sense to me especially as the iPod Touch can go up to 64GB or maybe even 128.

Obviously the camera front and back should be in the new touch plus iOS4.

The usually form factor changes / enhancements for the remaining iPod lines.

A new AppleTV / iTV would be welcome but the price has to be better. $99 would get plenty of people trying it out.

Apps should work for the new iTV plus it should integrate with the iPhone or iPad to provide a way to control the TV from the couch or control games like the Wii controller can. All of the hardware is in place so only the integration needs to be done.

With this Apple could take on the Gaming industry at the TV level as well as the handheld level.

  12. I was a pioneer and technic fan myself, but my classic 120 gb does just fine… i use either my studio or ear bud senheisers to tone the bass down a bit, and love em.I take it for what it is; and It is, after all, a portable unit, not a full fledged audio system. MHO
