AT&T to offer cash back to recent iPhone 3GS buyers

“If you were one of the unlucky ones who bought an iPhone 3GS before Apple dropped the price, AT&T wants to make it up to you. We just got word from an MMi member inside AT&T that the carrier is going to offer a ‘one-time Customer Price Protection’ for anyone who bought a 16GB or 32GB iPhone 3GS in the month before the price drop on June 7,” Paul Ash reports for ModMyi.

“You can either get $50 credit for the 16GB or $100 credit for the 32GB off your bill, or you can exchange a new 3GS or 3G and have the whole purchase price put towards the purchase of a new [iPhone 4]. You need to get the credit within 30 days of purchase, though, so get a move on if you want to cash in; if you bought from May 7 – May 14, you still have until June 14,” Ash reports.

Ash reports, “‘A customer who purchased iPhone 3G/3GS through a Local Dealer from May 7, 2010 until June 7, 2010, who would like to exchange it for iPhone 4 and pay the price difference, will be able to do so,’ [an internal AT&T memo reads].”

  1. Trying to keep the cry baby whiners from complaining… Anyone who bought a 3GS should have had to suck it up and deal with it. Just like buying any other consumer electronic right before it is upgraded… AT&T;is setting a precedent for whiny little babies to bitch and moan and get whatever they want. Stupid entitlement society…

  2. “Stupid entitlement society…”

No, this is capitalism responding to consumers, ie people that give them money now and IN THE FUTURE. This has nothing to do with entitlement – it’s good business practice when your $ is made through keeping subscribers.

Maybe if you actually considered reality instead of some bizarre ideology.

  3. Geez Joe, did you not get laid last night? Not everyone obsesses over everything that Apple does. In fact, a small percentage do. Most non-geekheads just don’t follow Steve Jobs’ every bowel movement.

What ATT is doing should be applauded. Apple did the same thing for iPhone purchasers who bought at launch, and they dropped the price a few months later. I got a little spending spree at an Apple Store.

Good move ATT. Now, about this $20 for tethering? Let me whine about it.

  4. You have 30 days to return your phone anyways. So I don’t think that they are giving anything away here. They are just spinning it to make them look like the good guys here.

My two cents. Please feel free to bash me if I am wrong on this.

  5. @TheGr81,
That was my question, too. I think it means that they will let people with the 16 GB upgrade to the 32 GB iPhone 4 if they want to. Otherwise, it’s a free upgrade!

Not quite. You can return the phone within 30 days and get a full refund. This is your choice of money back and keep your 3G/3GS or upgrade to the iPhone 4 for free.
