Construction of a massive new East Wing at the White House is advancing at an accelerated pace, combining a neoclassical state ballroom with a multi-story underground security and military facility. Apple is among the private corporate donors listed by the White House as supporting the project.
Announced in July 2025, the plan called for replacing the aging East Wing — demolished in October 2025 — with a roughly 90,000-square-foot structure. The above-ground portion centers on a State Ballroom intended to seat 650 to more than 1,000 guests, far exceeding the capacity of the existing East Room. Officials have described the design as having high ceilings, chandeliers, and architectural details meant to complement the neoclassical Executive Mansion. Later plans added features such as a drone-resistant roof and, in some descriptions, a rooftop drone port.
Beneath the ballroom, crews have been building a substantially expanded underground complex. President Trump has called it a “massive” military facility that the ballroom itself would shelter. Descriptions from administration officials and court filings include an upgraded Presidential Emergency Operations Center, bomb shelters, secure communications, biodefense systems, and major medical facilities. The work required excavation of the World War II-era bunker that previously sat under the East Wing. The administration has argued the above-ground structure is necessary to protect and complete the subterranean security work.

Note: The original 37-name list also included individuals and family foundations (for example Adelson Family Foundation, the Lutnick family, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, Harold Hamm, Stephen A. Schwarzman, and others). Carrier was reported as offering HVAC equipment rather than a cash donation.
The White House has repeatedly said that private donors, including Apple, are covering the ballroom itself so that “no taxpayer dollars” are used for that portion. Contractor estimates and reporting have put the overall East Wing project — ballroom plus underground security work — at $400 million to $600 million or more, with substantial taxpayer funding directed to Secret Service upgrades, the underground complex, and related hardening.
Construction has proceeded under legal challenges. Lower courts issued injunctions targeting above-ground work while generally allowing lower-level security-related underground construction to continue. In August 2026 the Supreme Court allowed above-ground work to proceed pending further proceedings, with the administration telling the court a 250-person crew was working 20 hours a day, seven days a week. Officials said the project was about 65 percent complete and that a concrete-and-steel superstructure already extended five stories below grade and as high as 70 feet above. Photos from September 2026 showed additional structure rising on the site.
The administration has projected substantial completion of the complex’s superstructure later in 2026 and overall project completion by summer 2028.

Apple executive chairman Tim Cook is expected at the White House state dinner for China’s Xi Jinping on September 24, 2026. The East Room holds only about 150 people, which is inadequate for a large state dinner plus a Chinese delegation. Past administrations often used tents and portable toilets on the South Lawn for that reason. Whether guests eat in a tent, the East Room, or another setup on the grounds is still unconfirmed.

I can only guess that many here–upset with “stakeholder capitalism”–still think the US is a pure capitalistic country.
Do a search on; ” bureaucratic capitalism, corporatist capitalism, or stake holder capitalism” and your idealism might be reshuffled. None are remote to what’s observable in the US. Just a simple point that supports and that ALL AAPL shareholders have benefitted…the vast amount of wealth in the S&P in the last decade, or so, has been held by 7 companies. The VAST amount of investments–involving banks, hedge funds, insurance co’s, retirement funds, endowments, AND foreign capital, etc, are in placed these companies. They have been THE stock market for all intents and purposes. They are our stakeholders. They will increasingly be our judge/jurors…feeding us what THEY think we need.
For context: I am a “constitutionalist” and stand for the US…including D/R_Rich/Poor and also believe Capitalism is the cleanest shirt in the dirty clothes bin.
