“AT&T Inc. said Thursday it would no longer sponsor Tiger Woods, joining Accenture in dropping support for the world’s top golfer, who’s taking a break from the sport to focus on his marriage after his admitted infidelity,” Peter Svensson reports for The Associated Press.
“The phone company hasn’t used Woods’ image extensively in advertising, but its logo appeared on his golf bag. That deal had been billed as a “multiyear” agreement when it was signed early in 2009, after Buick ended its endorsement one year early because of its financial woes,” Svensson reports.
“Woods has also been the host of the AT&T National PGA Tour event since it started in 2007,” Svensson reports. “Tour spokesman Ty Votaw said that since Woods is on indefinite leave from professional golf, he will not serve as host for the 2010 event. However, his Tiger Woods Foundation will continue to be the beneficiary of the AT&T National, under a contract that runs through 2014, Votaw said. AT&T said it would continue to sponsor the event.”
Svensson reports, “AT&T has also been the presenting sponsor of the annual Tiger Jam concert event in Las Vegas, but that contract has expired, according to AT&T spokesman Michael Coe. AT&T, which is based in Dallas, did not comment on its reasons for dropping Woods, or how much the relationship was worth.”
“Consulting firm Accenture dropped the athlete two weeks ago, saying he was “no longer the right representative” of the company’s values,” Svensson reports. “Gillette, a unit of the Procter & Gamble Co., also has said it won’t air ads for its razors that include Woods or include him in public appearances.”
“Swiss watch maker Tag Heuer, a unit of luxury goods empire LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, also said that it would ‘downscale’ its use of golfer Tiger Woods’ image in its advertising campaigns for the foreseeable future,” Svensson reports. “Electronic Arts Inc., which puts out the ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour’ series of golf video games, has not said what its plans are for the franchise.”

MacDailyNews Take: “Tiger will do more than any other man in history to change the course of humanity.” – Earl Woods, December 1996
When reached for comment aboard his $22 million floating hideout, Tiger replied, “Oh, my bad. I thought dad said I would ‘do more humanity than any other man in history.’ Whoops.”
@bearman: there is cheating and then there is CHEEEEAAAATTTTIIINNNGGGGG!!!!!!!
@iMaki: Everyone of us should have multimillion dollar contracts to peddle a watch or a car so everyone across this Earth knows what it feels like!
Tiger is NOT a private citizen regardless of what he thinks. Neither are movie stars or politicians… Tiger IS protected by law from libel and slander, but not being the butt of a joke based on their dumb ass actions. He markets his name for Pete’s sake and the businesses that pay him big bucks to represent their product expect a certain image. If they wanted a scum bag, then according to @bearman, anyone of us here posting would do!
OK. It’s nobody’s fault but Tiger’s. He cashed in on being squeaky clean, and didn’t live up to his end. That’s why sponsors are running. He cashed in on being a mild mannered, ethical, faithful black man, and wasn’t. Not only did he let down his family, more importantly he let down what he represented because what he represented was a role model. Something to be said for wacking off in the closet if so much is at stake.
Part of being a celebrity is giving up part of your privacy- kind of a definition of the term, eh? Some celebrities do not market themselves as goody two shoes; those guys get a pass when they screw up.
@montex: It’s not a matter of sitting in judgement of TW. It’s a matter of making fun of him. That prick David Letterman gets paid the big bucks to spoof the person in the news today. Hell, he still can’t get over making fun of Sarah Palin! But when he gets caught screwing around, look how quickly he asks for privacy and buries his Mea Culpa. You think Sarah would get the same break from that MORON?!
Same with that asshole Robin Williams. He’ll be the first one to make a joke about Rush Limbaugh and Oxycotin prescription drug abuse but when he falls off the ladder with his abusive alcohol drinking again and goes into rehab, he has the gaul to ask for privacy.
Making fun of someone is what is done! @bearman thinks the real hypocrites are those that cheat but are not caught yet or think of cheating. I say the real hypocrite is those that place themselves on some high ground regarding anyone else making judgement, when it can probably be said that at least one time in one’s life, they sat in judgement of someone else, made fun of them or worse, condemned them because of their gender or race.
The fun with Tiger Wood’s will die down when we all move on to the next scandalous event. And I agree, Tiger will survive. Just ask Kobe Bryant!
The important aspect is that this is real close to Apple related and not hit whoring at all.
I knew a girl who Tiger would like to meet.
She could hide 13 golf balls in her muzentouchit.
No wait, that was ping pong balls.
Forget it, carry on.
What is most interesting about the Tiger Woods situation is how this flood of women, all clamoring for attention by claiming to be Tiger’s former lovers, came out of the woodwork immediately after the story of Tiger’s accident broke. It was almost a karmic kind of thing… The moment he stumbles, the jackals are all going for his throat. Very strange.
In reality, Tiger is no different than any other elite athlete or pop star. They are all leading secret lives of extreme excess, and the worst thing that any of them can do is to call too much attention to that unseemly fact. None of them are the heroes that their fans and admirers make them out to be. They are ordinary mortals who succumb all too easily to the many temptations they are exposed to on a daily basis. What else is new?
It is a shame.
Fame is almost always destructive, but you don’t know what that even means until you have to put on a baseball cap to go to the store.
So I’m told.
“The fun with Tiger Wood’s will die down when we all move on to the next scandalous event.”
I do believe you meant to say “The fun with Tiger’s wood…”
Actually, he no longer goes by the nickname “Tiger.”
His new nickname is “Cheetah.”
How much money does AT&T;make every year renting 1-900 services to dial-a-porn operations?
Uhm, and so Tiger does what every other professional athlete in baseball, basketball, tennis, soccer and football do and he gets his petard nailed to the mast? Why?
What’s the difference between a golf ball and an Escalade? Tiger can hit a golf ball 400 yards.
Everybody relax. Can’t do the time… Don’t do the crime. EVERYONE suufers the consequences and also reaps the rewards of their actions.
I don’t think any less of Tiger for what he has been caught at. I generally think very little of anyone who runs their life for fame and its reward.
But if I had hired him as a representative of wholesomeness do you think I should keep him employed now that he has exposed himself?
It seemed his choice of lovers was very poor…until his liaison with ChrissyOne came to light….he does have good taste after all.
Tiger who? Oh the tennis fella.
While this conversation doesn’t focus on Mac, it is interesting to view the takes of people of similar interests- actually a lot of well reasoned (and sometimes funny) opinions are contained herein.
Some dangling mysteries:
Why and how are are some public figures “selected” for particular excoriation? *LTD makes a sound comparison between the public importance of the careers of MLK and Tiger, but Dr. King also had numerous extramarital exploits.
And speaking of privacy, what in the world would possess these women to reveal their affairs with Tiger? Very strange.
Why and how are are some public figures “selected” for particular excoriation? —artsguy
That’s an interesting question. I’d guess that, in many cases, the short answer is that somebody is gunning for the person whose name is being dragged through the mud. Bill Clinton obviously had enemies who pounced on him the moment his indiscretions were made public. Like Tiger Woods, Bill Clinton wasn’t doing anything that everbody else wasn’t doing. But he got caught, and he had enemies who used that against him. It’s disturbingly easy to get the masses worked up into a self-righteous lather if that’s your intention.
And speaking of privacy, what in the world would possess these women to reveal their affairs with Tiger?
Well, we’re not exactly dealing with saintly characters here. Jerry Springer proved beyond a doubt that some people will say or do anything to get attention. And in this screwed up world, media attention also means big bucks in your pocket. In Tiger’s case, it’s a feeding frenzy.
Fuck Tiger and those of you defending him.
As for your other statements that he’s no different, BS.
He made a fortune being “Mr Perfect”
He’s not – he’s a douche.
Comparing him to Charlie Sheen and Koby is fine in my book.
All losers.
All should be unemployed.
@alansky:
Thanks for the thoughtful reply.
@Me in LA:
I guess most of us share in some way your assessment of Tiger, Sheen, etc. In particular, Rot’nApple rang my bell with his comments on Letterman, who is absolutely breathtaking in his capacity to brush aside his personal revelations and then ruthlessly continue to pursue his “humorous” denigration of other public figures like Pailin- all of this carried out with a sort of arrogant superiority. While Tiger, as some averred above, may have ‘sold’ the use of his name to companies banking on his maintenance of a wholesome personal image, at least he hasn’t spent his time belittling others as Letterman has. Which brings us sort of full circle to Bearman and IMAKI. Their comments brought to mind other phrases:
“And why seest thou the mote……”
or
:“…cast the first stone”
It absolutely spoiled my pleasure in looking down with contempt on Letterman for looking down with contempt on Pailin.
How’s a guy to have any fun?
Well, at least some of the jokes and writing above were clever and witty
.
That’s some compensation, I guess.
SKY SPORTS BREAKING NEWS!!! I has been announced that next year’s shirt sponsor for TIGER WOODS will be Tampax. A company spokesperson said “to sponsor a c**t going through a bad period is exactly what our company is all about…”
Tiger has unfortunately lost a few endorsement deals recently, but I understand that he is picking one up, with the drug giant Pfizer. They are coming out with a new product, called Tiagra. It’s for when 18 holes just aren’t enough.
