Apple’s new Verizon-swatting iPhone ads (with video and schedule)

“Apple is launching two new iPhone ads on TV tonight. The ads are intended to tout the iPhone’s ability to hold a simultaneous voice and data connection at the same time, something you notably can’t do [on Verizon’s network],” Arik Hesseldahl reports for BusinessWeek. “Here we see Apple doing its part as both a good AT&T partner, and touting a great feature of the iPhone all at once.”

Hesseldahl reports, “The ads will appear tonight during ‘House’ on Fox, ‘Dancing With The Stars’ on ABC, ‘How I Met Your Mother’ on CBS and several others including ‘The Daily Show’ on Comedy Central and several of the late-night talk shows.”

  1. I don’t get it, I’m on Sprint, which is CDMA like VZW, and I can surf the web, text, check email, view apps and check weather etc. while on a call.

Voice cuts out a little/lot while the data is being accessed, once the site loads, voice goes back to normal. I don’t have to hang up, look up the address, email or website then call the person back as some seem to suggest.

I think the simultaneous voice and data on AT&T;or GSM in general just means there is no voice degradation as data is accessed.

But it makes a good commercial because many of you think we have to hang up a call to look up an address or website.

  2. I didn’t realize how big a deal it was to be able to be on a call and get data at the same time until I needed to have such capabilities with my iPhone 2G. I use this feature constantly with my 3GS, particularly Maps, email and Safari. It drove me absolutely nuts to be talking to a client or to my wife but not be able to get directions at the same time.

  3. Beejeebers!

Took a sec to view the ads, and wow!
Unlike Verizon’s 5-year-old-in-the-sandbox sniping, Apple NAILED it.

Verizon CAN NOT DO what AT&T;does, and they can’t because of the creaky antique US only network they’ve deployed.

    Verizon?

You’d have been better off shutting up about rejecting the iPhone when Apple came a callin’, because after talkin’ all yer smack, you’re about to become the proverbial Red Headed Stepchild.

Thing is, this time, I’m cheering for the beat-down.

You don’t get it, but in the first 3 words you declare you’re NOT the target for this ad? This is attacking the Droid on VZ.

Still confused? Have some warm milk and go back to bed.

  5. @ Pianar – you must have bad electromagnetic vibes. been using my iPhones all over SF all these years since the beginning. it works. “completely unusable” is nonsense, you’re seriously exaggerating. the first year 2G was more problem than the 3G has ever been. only notable issue is when inside a big concrete building.

will AT&T;’s upgrades now in process really help? we’ll see …

  6. @Quad Core

It’s “hinterland,” actually; and on Lake Powell, in southern Utah, one is DEFINITELY there. The supposed 3G service that Verizon’s map brags about near Navajo Mountain is nothing short of crap (and, in truth, doesn’t come close to matching EDGE speeds, even).

NOTE: The reason most of us are so dissatisfied with ATT’s service is that we USE that service. We know it all-too-intimately. But take a gander some time at the Verizon boards and what people are saying there. Same complaints, same objections, same threats to leave and never come back.

The truth is that we all hate the carrier we presently have, for the grass is always greener OVER THERE. Me, I’m satisfied with ATT, warts and all . . . and, yes, I am a former Verizon customer here in Colorado (and on Lake Powell, Utah).

  7. I want an iPhone! The various networks can wave all the “smart” phones in the world at me, offering all kinds of deals – to absolutely no effect. I just don’t know if I should wait for the next gen version, or just plunge in now… either way, it’ll be so long T-Mobile, although for the most part they’ve been a decent provider, with somewhat limited range, but good customer service and absolutely consistent billing, which is more that I can say about my Verizon friends’ experiences each month.

None of it matters. I want an iPhone.

  8. @mike,

I am still confused mike. Your answer wasn’t helpful in the least. Unless you were trying to convey how big of a prick that you are.

Since the ad didn’t mention Droid or VZW I’d like to know how you know who the target audience is, were you at the marketing meeting? If you weren’t STFU.

It’s just as easy to think the ad is aimed at anyone “NOT” using an iPhone or AT&T;.

Plenty of people on here think that only GSM lets you do what the commercial showed. On several other threads on this forum lots of people seemed to think that ALL CDMA users had to hang up, search then call back.

  9. …and if you want to know where you can actually do what ATT ad suggest, you can check Verizon ads and make sure you are not in white spot of ATT map.

Now, can’t we all agree that 3G coverage is important? Thanks, Verizon. Work harder, not try to be smarter, ATT.
    We love you both.

  10. And yet Verizon’s going to get an iPhone any day now! That’s what all the analysts say, right?

Can we please remember this thread the next time an “Apple-Verizon deal” story comes up?

  11. You know. It’s one thing getting into a battle of the schlongs with Microsoft, because obviously as brazen as MicroCrapt is, it must have big balls, right?!? These recent Mac vs. PC commercials have been great. Mac is simply steppin’ up to the screen and pulling it out in front of everybody. Girls are gooing.. PC is extremely embarrassed. This is definitely going to haunt him for the rest of his life. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

But, these ads.. I don’t know.. I kinda picture the conversation Steve had with Randy..

<steve> Don’t get your panties all in a wad now, Randy. Those bitches over at VZ are just pissed off because they screwed up… I’ll help you out, but you aren’t going question me not once, ever again. You may run AT&T;as far as the world is concerned, but we both know who your daddy is, don’t we?

    <randy> Yes, Dad!

<steve> Good. Now go sell more iPhones.

Personally, I think Steve-o is getting into a schlong-match with a female. They may both get screwed here.. just saying.

Maybe Mike was referring to this particular headline MDN posted for this thread. It sort of points to which audience is being targeted: “Apple’s new Verizon-swatting iPhone ads (with video and schedule).”

  13. @silverhawk,

Despite what the headline says, the ad does not mention verizon or the droid. I understand that it is implied and these ads are to counter VZW “got a map for that” ads. I was just pointing out how much of a dick that mike was. His response was uncalled for.

But more to the point of my original post, lots of people on here have the view that CDMA can’t do the things that AT&T;’s GSM network can. I’ve never had VZW so I don’t know about them, but I am on Sprint and I don’t have to hang up, search the web or email then call the person back. Sprint is CDMA like VZW, so is it the network, or is it VZW that won’t let you do that? The ad only says the network, not which network. So that “can” be confusing to some people.

That is what I was posting before mike’s ridiculous, juvenile reply.
