“Apple is launching two new iPhone ads on TV tonight. The ads are intended to tout the iPhone’s ability to hold a simultaneous voice and data connection at the same time, something you notably can’t do [on Verizon’s network],” Arik Hesseldahl reports for BusinessWeek. “Here we see Apple doing its part as both a good AT&T partner, and touting a great feature of the iPhone all at once.”
Hesseldahl reports, “The ads will appear tonight during ‘House’ on Fox, ‘Dancing With The Stars’ on ABC, ‘How I Met Your Mother’ on CBS and several others including ‘The Daily Show’ on Comedy Central and several of the late-night talk shows.”

Funny, here in South Florida I do get the occasional dropped call but it is rare. I get them less than when I had a simple Motorola flip phone on Verizon.
I am actually pretty happy with AT&T;and I love my iPhone.
We have the Rudolf Reindeer book with the Island of Misfit Toys a relative gave our 4-year old. It’s a terrible book with poorly understood references to the song, several mistakes, and so many logical flaws even our son notices. This crap is what Verizon chose as a creative template.
Verizon’s map ad, although inaccurate, works well. AT&Ts;answer doesn’t. So Apple had to do something.
@ everyone who think their Sprint phone does data/voice simultaneously
Sprint’s network does NOT support voice and data usage together. Not on their network anyway. Perhaps over wi-fi, but not on their CDMA network. See comment from Sprint employee confirming it here:
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/23939
It’s really bizarre how many people don’t grasp this, or worse, insist it’s not true. Hell, a friend of my wife works for Verizon, and she’s insisting that the Droid can do voice/data simultaneously on their network from their own testing right there in the office.
An update to CDMA is coming next year that does support this:

@Jerry T,
Yes, AT&T;is the only widespread network that offers both data and voice at the same time on 3G. Thus the ads are accurate.
Now you could have a voice call on many phones on other networks while surfing via WiFi (although many phones don’t allow this, even some of those that are WiFi enabled).
Additionally, it is possible for both carrier and hardware to work together to offer data-only that simulates data & voice because the voice is going through the data channel (VoIP), but this isn’t available on most phones, most areas, and I don’t think on Verizon at all. This isn’t the same as Skype which isn’t what this ad is talking about.
The problem with the fake data & voice method, beyond availability, is the quality of both the voice and the spend of the data. Both degrade pretty significantly and aren’t even in the same league as the speed you can get via AT&T;’s 3G network.
And of course LTE/4G is rolling out, so it’s possible to get data and voice there as well, but that’s FAR from being ready for prime time.
I like these ads a lot. They show the advantage of AT&T;’s 3G network while at the same time demonstrating ways that the iPhone’s multitasking can be superior to the competition.
@macslut,
Thanks for the reply, very sensible answers. And it turns out I must have been getting my data via wifi whilst on a call.
@Fat Basterd,
It’s not that I didn’t grasp what was being said. It was that I didn’t realise that my data was coming via wifi.
Thanks for the links, very informative. I hope the CDMA updates that allow simultaneous voice/data rolls out on the Sprint network.
Hey but head this touts the 3gs not edge merry christmas
“AppleJack
What?
The music is great! . . . It creates tension, and builds to an end with a climax : Can your music do that?”
Get back, Jack. Sorry, but disagree. It’s flat and depressing, sounds as if it’s meant to be threatening or something. But it’s not. For once Apple made a bad pick for music.
