According to Apple Support’s iPhone Discussions BBS, iPhone users are reporting that iPhone OS 3.1 software is causing their iPhone 3G devices to shut down and drain battery life. It seems that in most, if not all cases, a hard reset will revive the phone (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten second until the Apple logo appears).
Some iPhone users also report having difficulties connecting to Wi-Fi points, GPS issues, and that tethering (available outside the U.S., thanks, AT&T) has stopped functioning in legally unlocked phones.
With the number of people discussing iPhone OS 3.1 on Apple’s site, we’d guess that iPhone OS 3.1.1 is due sooner than later.

MacDailyNews Note: For the record, a seemingly random shut down with and/or due to complete battery drain happened one time to us on one of our iPhone 3GS units running iPhone OS 3.1. Connecting to a power source and doing a hard reset immediately brought the iPhone back to life and the problem has not surfaced again in over four days of heavy use.
So, how’s iPhone OS 3.1 treating you? Let us know below in Reader Feedback if you’re having any problems with iPhone OS 3.1 and, if you are, on which iPhone model(s): iPhone (original), iPhone 3G, and/or iPhone 3GS.
My iPhone 3GS with 3.1 has been fine so far, no issues at all.
3.1 enormously sluggish on my 3G…reverted to factory setting and reinstalled all apps…works really smooth now.
No problems with my iPhone 3GS running OS 3.1
3.1 running perfectly on my 16GB 3GS, with 98 apps. I updated the day it came out. Very happy.
No problems so far. Knock on wood.
Fine for my 1st Gen iPhone.
Different story for my friend’s 3G. Constant shutdowns even after wiping and restoring just the basic OS (none of her apps). She ended up taking it to our local Apple Store where she received a new 3G. No issues with that running 3.1 after 4 days.
Wi-Fi sucks – it used to be able to see more networks and now will not find networks that I know are there.
I still use a 2G iPhone (it’s provided to me for free, along with the AT&T;service), and it has worked very well, but for one BIG problem: installation. Before doing so, I backed up my data in a pre-install sync, then downloaded and installed the 3.1 OS. That’s when my problems began. The first synch failed, and then would only sync for a few seconds. I tried again, and it would start, stop and inexplicably, restart a sync on its own. The result: ALL my data was lost and overwritten.
I ran to my Apple Store, and with their help, we restored my phone and did a new install of 3.1. After that, it’s run perfectly, but by then, the damage was done. All my data was apparently overwritten and lost.
NOTE TO MDN: I have had repeated problems in the past month attempting to post on your site. Guys, is it too much to fix your servers so they don’t generate errors? It’s especially frustrating when trying to post from an iPhone. Thanks!
I have had ZERO issues with 3.1 on my iPhone 3GS. In fact, I have noticed no real improvements as everything was working great before too!
I have an iPhone 3G (sans S). After the update, my phone has been ringing between two thirty and three thirty every morning. When I pick up I hear heavy breathing and then I think I can make out, “kill you parents.” I hope I’m not the only one with this issue.
My backlight stopped working. That makes my phone super challenging to use.
Since the update, the sound of the keyboard clicks has become considerably softer when typing – even with the volume set at maximum.
Tethering disappearing, phone locking up, when calls drop out, the call freezes and I can’t fully hang up to then redial them, so I have to reset the phone, data is sometimes unresponsive and will not connect in areas with full bars. iPhone 3G. Still love it but… thinking of just getting a 3GS and hoping these problems will go away.
No problems but now that you mention it…… once in a while like on a phone call. at the end of the call I have a blank screen and touching the screen does not wake the phone. I have to hit the home button but then it brings the screen up.
Weird.

“3.1.1 is available for my iPod Touch (1st gen) but not for my iPhone! Oh well, updating my touch now”
Interesting purchasing decision……..
3.1 gives me a freeze/shut down about once a day–when I’m not even using the thing! It just dies while asleep.
Also, GPS is borked. Completely non-functional 99% of the time (been that way since 3.0). I’d be pissed if I’d bought a navigation app!
Also 3.0-3.1 are dog slow on a 3G, lots of hitches. I’m sure a 3GS can handle 3.x, but a 3G seems to get out of memory fast–I miss the smooth 2.2 days.
New features: good. New bugs: not worth it. Make 3.1.1 count, Apple!
My wife’s 3GS wouldn’t connect to any website earlier today, but oddly, she was able to receive email.
She didn’t know what to do, but when I got home I reset it for her, and it is now working fine.
No issues with 3.1. My iPhone is working perfectly.
32 GB GS has been working flawlessly. I’m surprised to see so many having issues. Kind of weird. I went from the first gen iPhone to the GS, and I’ve notice a bit more strain on the battery, but I chalked that up to having 3G connectivity which has allowed me to go online throughout the day much more frequently. If you are on the phone all day, the battery is going to need some help during the day. All it takes is a charger in the car or office.
I have an iPhone 3G. My problem is that ever since the 3.1 upgrade, my phone shuts off. The most it has shut off has been 5 times a day. I have not encountered any other problems like wifi issues, or decreased battery life. In fact seems my battery tends to last longer than before but this is just a quick but “unscientific” observation on my part.
My luck with iPhone upgrades have not been good; with the 3.0 upgrade a couple months ago, I got another phone because 3.0 cause me to lose my WiFi and Bluetooth connections. I am VERY WARY and RELUCTANT to download anymore upgrades even if 3.1.1 “fixes” these current problems.
My iPhone runs out of battery within 3 hours of standby, no joke!!! Putting it in airplane mode solves the issue. Downgrading to 3.0 as not solve it. Worse upgrade ever by far.
F**k you Apple. No more tethering with OS 3.1 Any mobile phone can be used as a modem. Only this piece of Apple shit isn’t able to do that. I pay a flat rate to be online. Thanks Apple! That’s my final Apple product.
works just fine

My 3GS has been running flawlessly since Day One. All updates applied. Perfect.
I have a pineapple logo, does mine come from the Jamaican factory?
