So, how’s iPhone OS 3.1 treating you?

According to Apple Support’s iPhone Discussions BBS, iPhone users are reporting that iPhone OS 3.1 software is causing their iPhone 3G devices to shut down and drain battery life. It seems that in most, if not all cases, a hard reset will revive the phone (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten second until the Apple logo appears).

Some iPhone users also report having difficulties connecting to Wi-Fi points, GPS issues, and that tethering (available outside the U.S., thanks, AT&T) has stopped functioning in legally unlocked phones.

With the number of people discussing iPhone OS 3.1 on Apple’s site, we’d guess that iPhone OS 3.1.1 is due sooner than later.

MacDailyNews Note: For the record, a seemingly random shut down with and/or due to complete battery drain happened one time to us on one of our iPhone 3GS units running iPhone OS 3.1. Connecting to a power source and doing a hard reset immediately brought the iPhone back to life and the problem has not surfaced again in over four days of heavy use.

So, how’s iPhone OS 3.1 treating you? Let us know below in Reader Feedback if you’re having any problems with iPhone OS 3.1 and, if you are, on which iPhone model(s): iPhone (original), iPhone 3G, and/or iPhone 3GS.

  1. 3gs: up until 2 days ago, no problems w/ 3.1. I was in a building w/ no cell coverage and when I left, it said “searching” for a few mins, then “no service”. outside the bldg., I normally get 5 strong bars. waited a while, nothing. full reset, restored it. yesterday, I had one time when it would not wake up. again, reset fixed it. I got. a 3G wheen they came out and same for the S. never an issue until now

  2. No problems with 3G here, other than battery drains faster than I’d like — probably because I use it too dang much. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  3. My 3G suffers from iPod smart playlist issues. Completely jacked up – including random orders, live updating no longer works, album art for music I bought on CD is wrong…
Also, yesterday it lost contact with all cell service and I had to power it off and back on.
Haven’t noticed any real power data, but it feels like it drains faster. Nothing concrete to complain about, though.

    FIX MY IPOD!!!!

  4. I have a 3G S and haven’t had problems, but I haven’t noticed any improvements either (ie. not any snappier). The improved iPhone management through iTunes 9 with 3.1 is well worth the update and any problems that may have come with it.

Now, if Apple could just get autorotate to work like “buttah” I’d be a really happy camper.

  5. iPhone 3GS 32g in Ireland. When in a weak coverage area, 3GS signal is much worse than my old 3G. Phoned Apple & they said I’d be without phone for 2 weeks if I sent it back…as if I could go a fortnight without a phone. Use it for work email & million other things. Not a happy camper.

  6. Mine crashes a number of times a day since 3.1, usually it seems when plugged into the computer, through not always.

But the worst part is battery life, which has gone from reasonably good, to just plain AWFUL with 3.1. An firmware upgrade can’t come soon enough for me.

  7. Several garbled calls, so far. I love my Iphone and now hate AT&T;since I found out they’d eliminated some extra minutes they’d given me previously. Those minutes were supposed to be permanent, and were negotiated. AT&T;lies.

  8. Been having good luck on my 1st gen 8 GB and 32GB 3GS.

    Two request-
    1) a shortcut on the Home Page for power saving taking you directly to controls for Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, location services all on one page rather than having to go through several screens to turn one off and another on.

    2) Support for music controls on Blutooth headsets such as fast forward, skip, rewind, etc.

  9. I had a horrible time with 3.1 and my first-gen iPhone. Apps would take 2 – 3 minutes to launch and there would be a 50/50 chance that the app would crash when it did finally start up, requiring a hard restart of the phone. Battery life was also pathetic. I would have to plug in around midafternoon, even when I wasn’t using it much. It was awful.

I reset to a prior backup and still had the same issues. Then I reset totally (not to a backup). That was the trick. My iPhone is currently running 3.1 and is operating perfectly. I don’t know what happened, but it is now fixed.

  10. I had the same freezing issues that are commonly reported on my 3G with 3.1. I turned of the Safari Ant-Fraud protection preference in the main control panel under Safari, powered down and rebooted. Completely fixed my iPhone. Now as fast as ever. This is just too easy to do. So try it!
