So, how’s iPhone OS 3.1 treating you?

According to Apple Support’s iPhone Discussions BBS, iPhone users are reporting that iPhone OS 3.1 software is causing their iPhone 3G devices to shut down and drain battery life. It seems that in most, if not all cases, a hard reset will revive the phone (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten second until the Apple logo appears).

Some iPhone users also report having difficulties connecting to Wi-Fi points, GPS issues, and that tethering (available outside the U.S., thanks, AT&T) has stopped functioning in legally unlocked phones.

With the number of people discussing iPhone OS 3.1 on Apple’s site, we’d guess that iPhone OS 3.1.1 is due sooner than later.

MacDailyNews Note: For the record, a seemingly random shut down with and/or due to complete battery drain happened one time to us on one of our iPhone 3GS units running iPhone OS 3.1. Connecting to a power source and doing a hard reset immediately brought the iPhone back to life and the problem has not surfaced again in over four days of heavy use.

So, how’s iPhone OS 3.1 treating you? Let us know below in Reader Feedback if you’re having any problems with iPhone OS 3.1 and, if you are, on which iPhone model(s): iPhone (original), iPhone 3G, and/or iPhone 3GS.

  1. 3.1 fixed the ONLY complaint I had with 3.0… that the sort of addresses in email autofill was changed to some weird sort…now it’s back to sorting by most used and I am totally a happy camper.

  2. Since 3.1 I have lost visual voicemail. An ATT rep told me to do a restore of the iPhone without reinstalling the apps. I got the visual voicemail back. As soon as I reinstalled my apps (about 90 apps) I lost visual voicemail again. It doesn’t seem to be due to 3.1, but conflict with some apps and 3.1.
The only bug that bothers me is the loss of tethering … which I would pay for if it was legally available…but that’s another story.

  3. My only complaint is that when I’m at the home screen I can double click the Home button and get the music controls. But if I pause my music and those controls are closed, double clicking no longer brings up those controls to allow me restart my music. Anyone else having this issue? Worked fine before the update.

  4. The volume of the voice talking back to me when using speech recognition dialing (I use that all the time, very cool!) is low. Don’t know if that’s a 3.1 issue of something else. (Yes, my volume is up)

    Other than that, no problems on 3Gs or 3G. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cheese” style=”border:0;” />

  5. I twice lost my Visual Voicemail when I first upgraded to my 3Gs on launch day. The first time I was on the phone for over 2 hours before resolution. The second time (a couple weeks later), I spent 5 minutes on the phone before realizing that I was about to waste a LOT of time with a low level grunt repeating the troubleshooting steps I had already done myself and proved to not work the last time. So I got in the car, went to the AT&T;service center, and they got on with some upper level tech support to fix it once and for all.

  6. I have 3.1 and an iPhone 3GS
Since the updated combination of 3.1 and iTunes 9, all of my Smart Playlists have all of their songs jumbled in some random order when I access that playlist on my iPhone.
They appear in the correct order on iTunes but not on the phone.
Turning off the playlists’ Live Updating feature on iTunes seems to resolve the issue, but that’s breaking half the functionality of these Smart Playlists.
