So, how’s iPhone OS 3.1 treating you?

According to Apple Support’s iPhone Discussions BBS, iPhone users are reporting that iPhone OS 3.1 software is causing their iPhone 3G devices to shut down and drain battery life. It seems that in most, if not all cases, a hard reset will revive the phone (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten second until the Apple logo appears).

Some iPhone users also report having difficulties connecting to Wi-Fi points, GPS issues, and that tethering (available outside the U.S., thanks, AT&T) has stopped functioning in legally unlocked phones.

With the number of people discussing iPhone OS 3.1 on Apple’s site, we’d guess that iPhone OS 3.1.1 is due sooner than later.

MacDailyNews Note: For the record, a seemingly random shut down with and/or due to complete battery drain happened one time to us on one of our iPhone 3GS units running iPhone OS 3.1. Connecting to a power source and doing a hard reset immediately brought the iPhone back to life and the problem has not surfaced again in over four days of heavy use.

So, how’s iPhone OS 3.1 treating you? Let us know below in Reader Feedback if you’re having any problems with iPhone OS 3.1 and, if you are, on which iPhone model(s): iPhone (original), iPhone 3G, and/or iPhone 3GS.

  1. 3.0 update probably killed my GPS on 3G. I didn’t notice it until I was OW. Got a 3GS now. (Owwww!!)

Other than that, no problems either on the 3G (i call it my iPod touch plus) or 3GS. (GS cam3 with 3.0, update to 3.1 apparently find and GPS works.

But I don’t use Smart Playlists and I don’t even know what Visual Voicemail is.

  2. My iPhone 3G freezes on a daily basis and needs restarting – I’ve never had any problems before the update. Restoring and removing all apps/music etc. made no difference. I suspect it’s some sort of memory leak.

  3. family plan. 2 identical 16gb 3gs’s. one updated to v3.1, one remains v3.0. side by side. v3.0 gps perfect – v3.1 dismal. negates the expensive mapping apps. v3.0 phone connects to wifi, v3.1 sitting right next to it “connects” but won’t d/l mail or apps or anything. just spinning ball… as another said earlier, i’m feeling totally effed over. good thing this is not my first encounter with apple products or it would be my last for sure…

  4. My 3G 8GB iPhone has locked up over a dozen times over the past week after I ran the 3.1 update. It will lock up for about 5 minutes or so then it’s OK. Today it has locked up 4 times, and I just reset it (again) which they showed me how to do at the Apple Store. I have an appt Tuesday to have the Geniuses look at it.
I restored it through iTunes earlier this week and that didn’t fix it.
After paying a premium price & monthly fees I certainly expect it to work as it should. This is ridiculous and I will let them know my displeasure on Tuesday! I like all the features of the iPhone, but I need a phone to WORK all the time, NOT just some of the time!!!

  5. The update took up more disk space, and now I can’t sync my photos b’cos there’s not enough room. Delete something? No thanks. I’ve pared down my music collection already to cram it into 14.5GB. I don’t want to sacrifice anything else! Damn those bloated updates!

  6. I don’t get the shutting down, but since 3.1 my home button will act like I double tap it when I single tap, taking me to the favorites or spotlight. That plus my horrendous AT&T;voice service….I can’t remember the last time I answered a call in my apt that didn’t get dropped at least once. They need to get their act together here in NYC, if not, the second they lose exclusivity, there will be a mass exodus. -f
