According to Apple Support’s iPhone Discussions BBS, iPhone users are reporting that iPhone OS 3.1 software is causing their iPhone 3G devices to shut down and drain battery life. It seems that in most, if not all cases, a hard reset will revive the phone (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten second until the Apple logo appears).
Some iPhone users also report having difficulties connecting to Wi-Fi points, GPS issues, and that tethering (available outside the U.S., thanks, AT&T) has stopped functioning in legally unlocked phones.
With the number of people discussing iPhone OS 3.1 on Apple’s site, we’d guess that iPhone OS 3.1.1 is due sooner than later.

MacDailyNews Note: For the record, a seemingly random shut down with and/or due to complete battery drain happened one time to us on one of our iPhone 3GS units running iPhone OS 3.1. Connecting to a power source and doing a hard reset immediately brought the iPhone back to life and the problem has not surfaced again in over four days of heavy use.
So, how’s iPhone OS 3.1 treating you? Let us know below in Reader Feedback if you’re having any problems with iPhone OS 3.1 and, if you are, on which iPhone model(s): iPhone (original), iPhone 3G, and/or iPhone 3GS.
Two 3GSs and two 3Gs in the family, no problems at all.
I upgraded my 3G to 3.1 successfully, then it hung doing the first sync and was bricked. Since then I have restored it but performance is sluggish, apps hang and crash or do not launch at all. Wish I could go back to 3.0.
Jailbreak………….. Fixes everything. end of story..
iPhone 3gs running 3.1. Haven’t had any Problems yet.
unable to pair Remote on iPhone to iTunes on my MBP. Then again it could be because of iTunes 9, iPhone OS 3.1 or Snow Leopard as i just upgraded all 3.
… and my battery life has also suffered. Can’t go a whole day without topping up the charge (medium usage).
I use that version but my iPhone is working right. A NORMAL RESET every night helps! Do that as your habbit guys. And it works.
A fortunate one. No issues with iPhone 3G 16GB or iPhone 3GS 32GB
One shutdown, one battery drain, no issues since then..
No issues whatsoever on any of our 3 iphones.
It’s much slower than 3.0
3.0 update probably killed my GPS on 3G. I didn’t notice it until I was OW. Got a 3GS now. (Owwww!!)
Other than that, no problems either on the 3G (i call it my iPod touch plus) or 3GS. (GS cam3 with 3.0, update to 3.1 apparently find and GPS works.
But I don’t use Smart Playlists and I don’t even know what Visual Voicemail is.
Give us AVRCP so I can control my audio tracks on my bluetooth headphones please!!!
My iPhone 3G freezes on a daily basis and needs restarting – I’ve never had any problems before the update. Restoring and removing all apps/music etc. made no difference. I suspect it’s some sort of memory leak.
Mine locks up 2 to 3 times a day and i have to reset it to get it to come back on this only started after I upgraded to 3.1.
family plan. 2 identical 16gb 3gs’s. one updated to v3.1, one remains v3.0. side by side. v3.0 gps perfect – v3.1 dismal. negates the expensive mapping apps. v3.0 phone connects to wifi, v3.1 sitting right next to it “connects” but won’t d/l mail or apps or anything. just spinning ball… as another said earlier, i’m feeling totally effed over. good thing this is not my first encounter with apple products or it would be my last for sure…
My 3G 8GB iPhone has locked up over a dozen times over the past week after I ran the 3.1 update. It will lock up for about 5 minutes or so then it’s OK. Today it has locked up 4 times, and I just reset it (again) which they showed me how to do at the Apple Store. I have an appt Tuesday to have the Geniuses look at it.
I restored it through iTunes earlier this week and that didn’t fix it.
After paying a premium price & monthly fees I certainly expect it to work as it should. This is ridiculous and I will let them know my displeasure on Tuesday! I like all the features of the iPhone, but I need a phone to WORK all the time, NOT just some of the time!!!
> we’d guess that iPhone OS 3.1.1 is due sooner than later
Well regardless of when it’s released it’ll always be sooner than later!
No problems with 3.1 for me.
After I upgraded to 3.1 most 3rd party apps on my 3G didn’t even start. Would only pop open for a second then close. Uninstalling/reinstalling them solved the problem.
Works great. Not a problem and I use many apps including Navigon frequently.
iPhone 3G 16gb, never has been jailbroken once but it has got random shutdowns since I upgraded to 3.1
I tried to do a complete restore from recovery mode but the problem still occurs.
The update took up more disk space, and now I can’t sync my photos b’cos there’s not enough room. Delete something? No thanks. I’ve pared down my music collection already to cram it into 14.5GB. I don’t want to sacrifice anything else! Damn those bloated updates!
I don’t get the shutting down, but since 3.1 my home button will act like I double tap it when I single tap, taking me to the favorites or spotlight. That plus my horrendous AT&T;voice service….I can’t remember the last time I answered a call in my apt that didn’t get dropped at least once. They need to get their act together here in NYC, if not, the second they lose exclusivity, there will be a mass exodus. -f
No problems with 16g 3G and 32g 3GS
so far 3.1 is very nice. Better battery life on my 2G. Also the first one to finally support Bulgarian keyboard.
