According to Apple Support’s iPhone Discussions BBS, iPhone users are reporting that iPhone OS 3.1 software is causing their iPhone 3G devices to shut down and drain battery life. It seems that in most, if not all cases, a hard reset will revive the phone (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten second until the Apple logo appears).
Some iPhone users also report having difficulties connecting to Wi-Fi points, GPS issues, and that tethering (available outside the U.S., thanks, AT&T) has stopped functioning in legally unlocked phones.
With the number of people discussing iPhone OS 3.1 on Apple’s site, we’d guess that iPhone OS 3.1.1 is due sooner than later.

MacDailyNews Note: For the record, a seemingly random shut down with and/or due to complete battery drain happened one time to us on one of our iPhone 3GS units running iPhone OS 3.1. Connecting to a power source and doing a hard reset immediately brought the iPhone back to life and the problem has not surfaced again in over four days of heavy use.
So, how’s iPhone OS 3.1 treating you? Let us know below in Reader Feedback if you’re having any problems with iPhone OS 3.1 and, if you are, on which iPhone model(s): iPhone (original), iPhone 3G, and/or iPhone 3GS.
No problems at all.
My battery life on my 32g 3GS dropped from two days to one after I upgraded to 3.1. My first “fix” was to turn off the notification feature — no difference. My second fix was to re-boot the phone, which worked. I am now back to two days between charges.
My battery status does not update. It will show 100% or 75% for the whole day, but then if I completely shut down the phone and restart, it will show the correct battery charge status.
My 3G is working fine. I feel lucky about that after reading the posts above.
For the most part I’ve not had any problems. My battery life does seem to be less than it was before, though not by a huge amount. I use fetch email, and I’ve dialed back the frequency it checks for new email to once an hour instead of every 15 minutes – though I don’t think that’s the culprit.
I did also run into one instance where the phone completely shut down and rebooted in the middle of playing a game (Gameloft’s Block Breaker Deluxe 2). That hasn’t happened since, though.

i live in manhattan. and after installing os 3.1, event though i have full 5 bars with 3g signal “ok” on, i can’t make a phone call nor text. this happens once every 2 to 3 days and i have to hard reset it for it to work again. and i have few friends they also have this problem. i hope they come out with a fix soon.
All is fine on my iPhone 3G
Hurrah! I have solved my 3.1 woes. It turned out to be bad content. I subscribed to a lot of calendars in iCal years ago, and it all needed to be cleared out from MobileMe. I found that I could no longer refresh the calendar page in mac.com (MobileMe) and the only way to get around this is to fire up ye hoary old iSync and reset sync data, then replace calendar data on MobileMe with data from my computer, where I had already deleted all the old calendars. MobileMe no longer filled my iPhone with rubbish and after the next sync my iPhone is snappy.
Room full of monkeys at typewriters and finally getting somewhere (somewhat)….
iPhone 3G kacked out totally. (OS3.1)
Plugged in, hard reset & all is right with the iWorld.
