Windows 7 Ultimate on Apple’s new MacBook Pro (with video)

“Here we are sitting in the PC Magazine Labs, and it occurs to us: We’ve got a shiny new Macbook Pro and an early build of Windows 7 on disc, so why not attempt to use one to run the other? Using Bootcamp, we did a clean install of the new OS over Vista, which was already running on the system. We couldn’t just upgrade because the Macbook wasn’t running SP1,” Brian Heater reports for Gearlog.

“All in all, the installation process went fairly smoothly,” Heater reports. “After installation, we installed the drivers via the Apple OS X startup disc, hoping that Windows 7 might have an easier time communicating with the hardware.”

“The disc didn’t do much, sadly. The system was unable to get online, and various other Windows 7 features, such as the mouseover preview, were disabled,” Heater reports. “Windows 7 still retained some of its key functionality, however…”

  1. What a bunch of shit heads. Did you watch the video?

“… using the Mac OS X (pronounced “ex”) disk…”

They’re not even people who use or understand Mac OS X (pronounced correctly as “ten”).

What was funny was how they’re talking about Vista and the “old Aero” interface. HA HA HA. I’ve never even USED Vista yet and they’re talking about it as it’s ancient news.

Microsoft is screwed and I couldn’t think of a more deserving company than them to crash and burn.

….such as what? Booting up, only to not work as promised?

Indeed, just like Vista. Only more so.

  3. I was planning on getting the new 17″ MacBook Pro (when it came out) to replace my almost two year old one – but if it has a glossy screen I sure as hell won’t get it. I’ll buy the current model instead..

Steve sure got it wrong this time.

Deal breaker for me – a Mac user since 1984!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. WHY WON’T VISTA DRIVERS WORK ON VISTA2? Seriously. Why can Microsoft NOT get it into their thick skulls that we don’t want driver issues? Hardware should just work. I think that because there is so much disparity in the Windows world in machine builds it becomes an issue, but with Macintosh everything is manufactured in house so it only makes sense that everything would work because they built it.

LOL! WTF is the “throw up” feature? Another gimmick I take it, and poorly named at that. Who actually maximizes windows? Maybe when you have a netbook sized screen…maybe. And windows users I suppose. One of my old friends used to have this thing where he would actually use the F11 full screen mode of IE6/7…i laughed a little, especially when he couldn’t get PDFs to open correctly in the browser. :p Yet another failure of Microsoftie.

  5. What’s reflected in that MBP glossy screen is FAR uglier than the Windows 7 interface it is obscuring.

It is quite staggering how Apple has cocked up BIG TIME on this. Jobs likes to boast about using no focus groups in the Apple design process… but we can see with these poor quality glossy screens where such a focus group might have avoided a HUGE, HUGE blunder.

What makes it even worse is that there is no fix for it.

  6. Hey, all you glossy screen haters,

Either buy a matte film, similar to what I have for my iPhone, install it, and get on with life.

Or. Get some 000 grit sandpaper and sand away on your glossy screen.

Definitely more heat than light regarding this subject.
