The world’s most advanced Mac keyboard?

“The first thing I’ll say about the Logitech diNovo Edge Bluetooth keyboard is that it’s very likely the most aesthetically stunning keyboard that’s ever been made for Mac computers, with its high-gloss, piano black, semi-translucent plexiglass finish accented by a brushed aluminum palm rest, all imparting an aura of posh elegance. It looks even better first-hand than it does in pictures, and it’s mighty impressive in pictures,” Charles W. Moore writes for Applelinks.

“IMHO, the diNovo Edge makes the Apple BlueTooth keyboard look like a wallflower to its belle-of-the-ball, the aluminum unit a bit stark and kind of gimmicky with its anorexic thinness by comparison. The Logitech ‘board is slim as well, but still with enough meat in its section to have just about the right amount of key travel and conventional, slightly contoured keys,” Moore writes.

“As you may have deduced by now, I’m pretty smitten with the Logitech diNovo Edge Bluetooth keyboard. The main downside is its price, listing at $159.99 for the Mac version, which is happily 20 bucks less than the Windows version, thanks presumably to not having to include a USB receiver dongle with the Mac unit. Let’s see; you could get five Kensington SlimTypes for that and have change left. However, all that high-end goodness does cost money,” Moore writes.

  1. Pretty.

Except that I got both the wireless (for home on the sofa) and the wired Apple keyboard (for my office) for less (what was this about Apple’s high prices?).

Plus, I don’t have to deal with the crappy Logitech software (which I find hard to call ‘drivers’), removing of which improved Leopard’s stability tremendously. Interestingly enough, the Logi Bluetooth mouse I had it installed for runs pretty much the same without it…

  2. Logitech makes the best mouses for Mac (and for PC) and their products are, overall, of very good quality.

When you work professionally, your screens should never be placed with side or back views to windows. It is a health matter for the eyes… within or without glossy screens.

As far as hardware is concerned, I agree. But not their ‘driver’ software for the Mac.

  4. Here’s a real full extended keyboard, the Moshi Celesta, with a similar look. Nice scissor keys, very low profile, no idiotic gimmicks. It’s not Bluetooth, oh well. Apple would be proud of this.

Beware, the info page for this keyboard is some bloated Flash scourge. I waited almost 2 fast cable connection minutes for it to load and gave up!

Logitech software bites. As for their mice? Besides general over-designed ugliness… PFFFFFFFT. Get a trackball if you value your hands and wrists.

ken1w… The Griffin iMate works with Leopard? HOW? It’s not supposed to! I’ve got an iMate and an old ADB Wacom tablet I’d love to hook up!

  5. Charles Moore is a writer. He makes his living typing all day long. He actually generates income by putting words together to form real English sentences with punctuation and everything. He doesn’t hang out trolling in MDN forums with a bunch of losers. Consequently if anyone’s opinion about a keyboard counts, well you do the math.

So are you suggesting that graphics professionals should always work in a windowless room? What a depressing prospect!

  7. Actually it’s pretty nice. I don’t have the Mac variant, I bought mine about 2 months ago. It is larger than the Apple keyboard, but much easier to work with while sitting on the couch. Which, by the way, is where I needed it. I didn’t go with the Apple one because they don’t include a trackpad. If they did..

The keyboard is better looking and more sleek than the pics make it out to be. If you haven’t seen/tried it, your opinions are as valid as Windoze users are about the Mac.

The round trackpad is just above G-d awful. It works well enough for what I need, but I do wonder what moron decided round was a good idea. It does drag-scroll by tapping on the top (12 o’clock) or right (3 o’clock) and then dragging your finger clockwise or counter clockwise, tho it tends to lose track of the fact that it’s scrolling after a circle or two.

The volume control is nice and handy to have, for a PC, but for a Mac which has easy access to the volume control on the menu bar, it’s unnecessary.

The buttons, keys, weight, balance and size are all very nice as the keyboard stays put while you use it, unlike the much smaller Apple keyboard which is too small and light so that any touch on it cause it to move all over the place. Add a keypad to the Apple one and it would be much better!

Not for everyone. But, if you have a MacMini or other system that you have on your large LCD TV, ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />, it’s nice for sitting on the couch and surfing or reading email.

Flame if you feel you must, but know that I’ve probably been an Apple user longer than almost any of you. Apple II in 1977, MacOS in 1983 (running on a Lisa).

  8. I am a lefty, and I think that the Logitech diNovo Edge Bluetooth Keyboard is perhaps even more friendly for lefties than for “normal” people. Think about it… If one wants to type and change the volume at the same time, one would use his/her left hand for the more difficult task of typing while using his/her right hand for the less demanding task of changing the volume.

Regarding the lack of a numpad, it’s worth noting that Apple’s own wireless keyboard also lacks a numpad. Nevertheless, two wrongs don’t make a right. A keyboard without a numpad is useless to a lot of people. So what is the advantage of foregoing a numpad in any keyboard — especially a keyboard that’s as expensive as keyboards like diNovo Edge and Apple Wireless?

  9. For my money, the worlds ultimate keyboard at this time would be a Maltron-Dvorak switchable keyboard of which Maltron is now (I think I saw) producing. But in practical terms the world’s best keyboard layout is the Dvorak. The reason for this is that a Maltron is a physical form as well as a layout. Dvorak on the other hand is built on the Qwerty physical platform. And it is already pre-built into every computer in the world. At least it is built into all Linux, Macs and PC’s.

Be sure to click on the links below for a treatise on the Dvorak layout. The reason I recommend the Dvorak keyboard is that for the cost of a letter or at the stroke of a pen whoever is the president of the United States can save the country triliions of dollars each and every year. Here are the facts as they stood in 1975. I saw this in a book called Future Facts. (if I recall right). Between the time the Dvorak was invented and 1975 the country lost over one trillion dollars in productivity. That was way before the advent of the PC and the Internet was a mere thought in it’s Father’s head. Now computers are ubiquitous, but the keyboard has persisted. In my opinion and certainly my personal experience this is due to the tenured system of education. I don’t have to even have to look at the facts but I’m willing to bet that the most tenured teachers in this country are typing teachers. I made that call out of the air. Challenge me if you will. And correct me if I am wrong.

Sooner or Later the world will wake up and no one will be using the Qwerty keyboard that has cost the world so much in terms of time, money and health. And as each passing day goes on the transition will become more and more costly. But it will happen. Were it to happen today the best keyboard to take on the job would be the Dvorak keyboard as it increases productivity greatly, uses the same basic physical keyboard layout. and the change can be made by simply applying labels on top of most keyboards and using a software package to switch the keystrokes of the individual keys.

I am beginning a campaign wherein I may even eventually have to run for congress just to be able to enter the legislation that makes the keyboard the only American Standard. But we now have a new president and this is my request of him. President Obama I am pleading with you to attend to this situation. You said yourself that we can all play our part. I held a platform meeting for your campaign but they would not let me add that suggestion to our recommendations. Please Mr. President take bold action.

The cost not to do so is phenomenal. Everyone who types on a Qwerty, whether or not they touch type does between 16 and 20 times MORE HARD PHYSICAL LABOR than those who type on a Dvorak. The cost is absolutely nothing. Zero, zip, nada. That is assuming that we do not require people to relabel their computers and the fact of the matter is that if people switch to Dvorak without being able to refer to the keys they actually learn at a much more accerated rate than even I did. And I never really studied the Qwerty although as I often was forced to use one I did learn some of the basics.

As America goes so will the rest of the world.

The facts about how much time energy and effort the Dvorak saves are so astounding that when first heard about it in Junior High School I refused to learn the Qwerty keyboard and instead took a voluntary F for typing. Since then I have learned the Dvorak and although I have never had formal lessons I type very well.

The facts are so astounding that the majority of the people who do end up reading my book: Ronald Reagan: Anti-Christ, tell me that if nothing else they are going to switch from Qwerty to Dvorak. And that brings me to my Biblical point. Jesus said: “And you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” It was Ronald Reagan that cancelled the Truth in Advertising Law. He did it secretly. So secretly that some people don’t even know that it is no longer the law of the land. They still assume that because someone says it in an ad it has to be true. Not so.

The DiNovo and every other basic Qwerty keyboard stinks in terms of physical design especially when you stop and think about all of the real keyboards that are out there. Here are a few” that may be worth considering, especially if you type in Dvorak.

Assuming that there are 50,000 typing teacher all making 100,000 dollars a year. That equals 5,000,000,000 or Five billion dollars a year. If we absolutely minimize my estimates to a saving of only 50,000,000,000 or 50 billion dollars a year we could let these DINOSAURS retire at full pay for the rest of their lives and still save the country 45,000,000,000 45 billion dollars each and every year.

“As America goes so will the rest of the world.”

Yeah, and John C. Dvorak invented the Dvorak keyboard. Where would we be like without him. Thank you John.

    BWAHAHAHAHA!
