Apple to surprise with earlier-than-expected next-gen iPhone debut?

“Will Apple surprise everyone with an earlier-than-expected debut of the next generation iPhone?” Eric Savitz asks via his Barron’s blog.

“Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster raised that possibility today. He writes in a research note that calls today to 20 Apple retail stores nationwide found none of them had iPhones in stock. He also notes the lead time for phones ordered on Apple.com stands at 5-7 days,” Savitz reports.

“Munster figures there is an 80% chance that a new iPhone is coming earlier than expected; he sees a 20% chance that there is a production or manufacturing issue with the phone,” Savitz reports.

  1. Apple would do well to get a new phone out by Mother’s Day. That way you get Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Graduation to sell new phones as gifts. After that, there’s no big gift giving event other than “because I wanted to” until Xmas. Well, there are birthdays but those are random.

I don’t know about the FCC thing but if it’s a variation of the current phone then I don’t think they’ll need it. They didn’t need it to do a 16GB phone, did they?

  2. Well All speculation aside…I have been looking the iphone over for a while and I’m looking forward to a the release of 3G technology….
But the comment of Bob jumping off a building really made me laugh….thanks…from Kabul afghanistan

  3. If 20 stores are sold out now, then by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, 50 stores will be sold out…perfect for a surprise new release amidst all the pumped up aura of speculation. AAPL will be up. Problem is, if they don’t deliver next week, it will be even more disappointing than Blackberry’s
9000 iPhone Clone and AAPL will drop. Apple always wins with the speculation hype with tons of free advertisement. DELIVER and we love you yet even more!! To really get real…Apple is a premisquous tramp and we love her as long as she keeps delivering.
