Analyst: 3G version of Apple iPhone imminent

“There is no doubt a 3G version of Apple’s iPhone is in the wings and it could be announced soon, according to wireless chip and DSP sector analyst Will Strauss of Forward Concepts,” John Walko reports for EE Times Europe.

“There is also speculation that Apple will announce the Wideband-CDMA 3G capable version of the phone when it finally reveals which operators it has chosen for the European launch of the handset,” Walko reports.

“An announcement is expected imminently, and could come as soon as this week,” Walko reports. “Whether the iPhone’s 3G baseband chip would also include the higher-speed HSDPA capability for the next release is uncertain, according to Strauss.”

  1. ” . . . know how to get the $100 iPhone credit?”

Yes. If you’re truly eligible (and deserving), you’ll receive instructions from a secret, hidden page on your iPhone from the mother ship. Memorize the special handshake and Antarean password and then locate the Receiver at your nearest Apple Store. You’ll need to approach everyone because the Receiver must remain undisclosed for obvious security reasons. Do not destroy your iPhone Schrute-style. The secret message will self-destruct on its own. You may get a brief tingling and burning sensation. This is normal.
    Good luck.

  2. “…..Will the current iPhones be upgradable to 3G when apple decides to do it?”

    ——————

Even if this was the case (which it isn’t,) you are still faced with the battery life issue. When Apple solves the performance and size problem, it will be with a different battery than what is currently in the iPhone.

As Steve said, current 3G chips are to large and power hungry for iPhones current form factor.

  3. I’m calling 3G 16GB iPhones r2 at MWSF ’08, available immediately in Europe and ~6 weeks later once they clear FCC approval so that the specifics cannot leak out through FCC filings as they did with the original iPhone.

Disclaimer: This claim is baseless and not grounded in any tangible evidence; much like all the other rumors that abound on these apple fanboy sites. (from one fanboy to others)

  4. i thought cdma was somewhat banned in the us because of the patant disputes between broadcom and qualcom?

the population is much denser in europe, which is why 3g networks were built so much quicker. they started up in major metropolitan areas in 2003, so we are all set. hell, ive had hsdpa all over my city for a year now. thats why we get 3g iphones and you probably wont…

  5. At the time of the iPhone’s unveiling, Qualcomm had a chip on the market that could do WCDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE. In fact they announced a product with this capability way back in 2004.

Dual-mode capability has existed for a long time – Apple may are may not have used a firmware-upgradeable, dual-mode chip in the current iPhone.

Steve’s pronouncement that 3G burns too much power would seem to be an indication that the iPhone does not employ a dual-mode chip.

WCDMA/HSDPA is available in some markets in the U.S.

Too bad Apple didn’t go with a “multi-mode” chip such as Qualcomm’s MSM7600 that supports CDMA2000 1xEV-DO and WCDMA/HSDPA. It would literally support every 3G network in the U.S. and most other places, too. But I guess that’s asking too much from a “technology leader” – to actually lead!

  6. Several months ago I looked at the competition here in Sweden, paying particular attention to the size, weight and battery life specs on Sony Ericsson and Nokia models both with and without 3G. My goal was to find an upgrade to my old SE K700i that would not be any larger or heavier, but that would not at least retain all of the basic performance and compatibility with improvements in as many areas as possible.

Without exception the 3G models were larger, heavier and had inferior battery life specs than comparable models without 3G capability. Sure, many of them had larger screens and some had double cameras or displays, but the even the models that were most easily comparable showed differences that echo SJ’s assertions regarding the technical problems with 3G chipsets.

Of course, the models that I evaluated were designed long ago and newer models might do much to minimize those differences. I can’t help but feel that Apple had access to information in January regarding the projected availability of the appropriate WCDMA/HSDPA-capable chipsets for the announced January 2008 launch in the Asian market. Whether or not that model will be the one used for the European launch depends upon a number of factors, but it wouldn’t necessarily surprise me if they launched in Europe with the current models in 8/16 GB configurations.

Why? Riding multiple waves is a better business strategy than betting the farm on one big one. Think about how Segei Bubka approached the Pole Vaulting world record. He got a bonus each time he broke the record, so he made sure that he broke it as many times as possible, only advancing the record by a centimeter each time. Going up by more than that would have been a wasted opportunity.

Apple has got to have several upgrades in the pipeline, but being as smart as they are they will use the combination of upgrade releases and price to meet specific seasonal marketing targets. They should never show everything that they have got, and as long as sales are still strong it is better for them to release a bit less a bit later than to give away too much too soon. They need to make the most out of every upgrade.

  7. I am 100% sure that 3G iPhone is coming on Sep. 25th

Remember, at the end of iPod announcements – Jobs said see you soooooooooooooooooon ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

    Apple will introduce iPhone 16GB for “$499′ and iPhone 3G, 16GB for $599, and the iPhone 8GB for $399. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  8. Actually sur télématin 31/08/07 showed the iPhone inrelation to internet-mobile web-access, revealing that it has 3G & GPRS (which is provided by the telecom-op) via software intergration!

I tried in vain to post this weeks ago, the video on the site is out off date “unavailable” but here’s the link to the site configuring French sites to the iPhone.http://www.kassius.fr/
