TheStreet.com’s Moritz tries to conjure up Apple iPhone ‘disappointments’

“Brace for more disappointments ahead in the Apple iPhone saga,” Scott Moritz writes for TheStreet.com. “Fans have been dreaming of a 3G Christmas. But observers are saying Apple probably won’t be offering the faster wireless version of the iPhone this year. ‘I don’t think we’ll see it until the first or second quarter of next year,’ IAG Research’s Roger Entner says of the third-generation wireless iPhone, which would provide speedier Web access than current versions.”

MacDailyNews Take: We already have speedier Web access than the rather slow 3G. It’s called Wi-Fi connected to cable, dsl, and even speedier connections. It’s built into every iPhone, but universally ignored by those who push anti-Apple agendas. All of these people clamoring for 3G are going to be mighty surprised when they see that web pages still don’t instantly appear.

Moritz continues, “CEO Steve Jobs gave a presentation Wednesday announcing, among other things, that the company was killing the 4-gigabyte iPhone and slashing $200 off the price of the remaining 8-gigabyte phone. The decision to drop half the iPhone lineup validates rumors reported July 31 by TheStreet.com that Apple was cutting production in half.”

MacDailyNews Take: Could Moritz really be that stupid and still be able to hold a job, even if it is just as Wolverton’s replacement with TheStreet.com? Obviously, cutting the 4GB model does not preclude Apple from doubling, tripling, or further increasing 8GB iPhone production.

Mortiz continues, “Apple says it is on track to hit its 1 million units sold goal this month, a respectably strong performance for a new device that carried a $600 price tag. But that means Apple so far has failed to sell out the 1 million phones it was prepared to supply in the first week of its introduction — signaling to industry experts that there was a limited demand for the ‘revolutionary’ new device.”

MacDailyNews Take: Another fantasy. Apple never said how many iPhones they were prepared to supply in the first week. All Apple has ever said was 1 million iPhones sold by end of September 2007 (which they accomplished yesterday) and 10 million iPhones sold in calendar 2008. Mortiz seems to be doing the usual: confusing analysts’ pie-in-the-sky and usually baseless estimates with Apple’s actual figures to arrive at some imaginary “disappointment.”

MacDailyNews Take: What, if anything, do you think is in it for TheStreet.com to hop, skip, and jump across the line between reality and fantasy in order to try to talk down Apple? Apple must have secretly added olfactory capability to Safari Beta because something about TheStreet.com sure smells fishy.

  1. Big thing I see is that the Street has no set up for user comments.
In other words, Here is my crap, and no one is allowed to comment back on how much crap it is.

    Right, Its a NCZ , a “NO CLICK ZONE” ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  2. Moritz is the face on Cramer’s call to dump the shares.

Traders make money on volatility. Volatility is proof people are interested. If Apple as a company creates product that drive volatility, well terrific. Absent that, the only way for a trader to make money is to create volatility.

  3. Wouldn’t it be just like Apple if all the current iPhones simply need a firmware upgrade to unlock Wireless-N AND 3G support?

While I don’t think that will happen, can’t you just hear the collective global *GASP*?! I’m not sure I’d be able to stop laughing for a month!

  4. You can send an email to them by clicking on his name at the top of the first page of the article…

I sent him a comment (or three).

You would think he would have learned something from Dan Rather…

    Research, research, research!

  5. “It’s a well known fact that when a factory stops producing one thing it can never be repurposed for something else. The 4GB factories will be closed down and left empty for the rest of time. How stupid.”

I seriously doubt the amount of RAM (8 vs 4) makes a huge difference in production. I’m sure the same factories used to make 4gb iPhones could easily produce 8gb iPhones.

And yes…. Moritz needs to revisit this article… way off base.

  6. 3G is the only reason I have not bought an iPhone. Wireless is only reliable at work and home. I have computers there so why would I use an iphone? I would browse on the iPhone when traveling. Why would I pay $399 for modem speed downloads? I hope Apple releases a 3G phone soon.

  7. “I seriously doubt the amount of RAM (8 vs 4) makes a huge difference in production. I’m sure the same factories used to make 4gb iPhones could easily produce 8gb iPhones.”

I’m sorry, you’re wrong. There’s a HUGE difference between 4gb and 8gb. The 8gb is twice as big. It’s actually cheaper to tear down the factory and build a new one than to try to retrofit the factory to build 8gb.

  8. Out of curiosity, can anyone cite the 10-million in calendar 2008 that MDN keeps referencing? I remember Jobs saying they wanted to have 10 million sold *by the end of 2008* but never anything about 10 million *in 2008 itself*.

By that token, wouldn’t the 1-3 million sold in 2007 be included in Apple’s totals? I mean, if they’re good, they should sell 100,000,000 and for that matter, they typically overshoot their goals by leaps and bounds, but if we’re talking about meeting Apple’s stated goals, I think they’re only going to need to sell 7-8 million in calendar year 2008.

Or did I hear it wrong?

  9. I already emailed the guy this morning. I don’t think he likes me much as I’ve emailed him before and ripped him a new one. Or at least tried to. I did freakin’ forget about the “disappointment” of not selling 1 million phones in a weekend. Dammit, that was one I really wanted to point out too!

  10. These guys have no concept of a production line the only difference between the 4 gig and 8 gig models is whether or not 1 chip gets populated. That’s one line of code in a surface mount component placement robot. Hardly worth commenting on. Besides from what I can see the 4 gig was the slow seller anyway. This way Apple streamlines the product line and cuts configurator costs in one fell swoop. No other smart phone even comes close with memory capacity and capabilities.

  11. “The decision to drop half the iPhone lineup validates rumors reported July 31 by TheStreet.com that Apple was cutting production in half.”

By this one sentence alone, Moritz has confirmed that he is indeed completely clueless, ignorant and uneducated.

It is without doubt, THE stupidest thing I have heard in a long time.

MW: “taking”…why is it taking TheStreet.com so long to get rid of this moron??

  12. @ bobchr:

They are being sarcastic. One should be able to tell that from the ridiculous exageration of what might happen, such as rebuilding a factory and wondering if the ground was still useable. Try to assume the best in our fellow geeks.

  13. i am pretty sure that there is a magical field generated by tech production that not only requires you to tear down the 4 gig plant but will also force new plants to be built in a different hemisphere.

that is why the 8 gig is in the north and the 4 in the south.

now that Apple has contaminated both hemispheres, they have to wait 35 years before they can build the 16 gig factory.

the only way around this involves dispelling the field and that requires a special spell at the night of a new moon and the sacrificing of a number of virgins….

… therefore the only way to stay safe from Apples future factory expansion is to have sex.

and that, ladies and gentlemen is science.
