NPD: Apple now sells nearly one in five laptops in U.S.

“Apple Inc.’s share of the laptop market is growing — the company now sells more than one in every six laptops purchased in the U.S., a research firm said today,” Gregg Keizer reports for Computerworld. “‘Apple’s definitely up,’ said Stephen Baker, an analyst at Port Washington, N.Y.-based NPD Group Inc. ‘Their sales are continuing to grow faster than the rest of the marketplace.'”

“NPD, which collects its data primarily from retail sources and excludes most online and all direct sales, said Apple’s MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops accounted for 17.6% of June’s unit sales, an uptick of more than three percentage points from May’s 14.3%,” Keizer reports.

“Baker attributed the jump in market share to refreshes that both laptop lines recently received,” Keizer reports. “The market share increase pushed Apple past Gateway Inc. into third place on NPD’s list of laptop sales leaders, behind Hewlett-Packard Co. and Toshiba Corp. Research firm IDC also has Apple in the third spot; data it released last month put Apple’s share of U.S. sales at 5.6%, far behind leaders HP (28.4%) and Dell (23.6%) but tied with Gateway.”

Keizer reports, “The next move by Apple, said Baker, will likely not be in its computer business — it refreshed the iMac family earlier this month — but on the iPod side. ‘I’ll stay firmly in the path of conventional wisdom and say that it’s iPods next,’ Baker said. ‘They haven’t been refreshed in almost a year.'”

Full article, including speculation about next-gen iPods, nanos, and shuffles, here.

MacDailyNews Take: As always, due to differing methodology between firms and limited measurements, the exact market share percentage isn’t nearly as important as the trend. The trend shown by NPD’s measures (and IDC’s, Gartner’s, etc.) for Apple is positive.

  1. None of us Mac “fanboys” owe you any explanation of any sort.

That’s right, you can continue to say that your Macs are BMW’s and using much higher quality parts.

Of course, most of you (like yourself) are too stupid to know why you uttered that statement… Let’s face it, Beryllium, You think Macs are “higher quality” built machines because “Steve Said So”, WOOOOO HOOOOOOO. But the fact is, Macs are overpriced version of what everyone else is selling, PERIOD!!

You’re right, you owe nobody anything. Your stupidity is clear for any free thinking human being to witness…

    WOOOOO HOOOO Steve!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Shoeman seems to have some comprehension difficulties. Nobody here has said Mac hardware is better than other PCs, neither has Steve Jobs. Quite conversely we all know it’s OSX that makes the difference. Steve Jobs also said this openly when they switched to Intel chips. As consumers we also choose not to have hardware related compatibility issues by purchasing Macs over PCs – it has never been about having Apple’s latest kitschy hardware designs. By installing OSX86 Shoeman has quantified this difference and also shown himself to be an OSX fanboy despite his insipid hardware related ranting.

  3. A lot of components are graded post-production, batches are tested and given a score. There is a standard, some are well above the standard, others just make the grade, they are priced accordingly. The likes of Dell, Gateway etc can save a few tens of cents per component if they are lucky. With all the just acceptable parts in these boxes it’s no wonder they fail sooner.

The clearest example to me has been Apple power supplies, many times now a circuit breaker has dropped and main power be cut off for half a second, a second or maybe two. The screen has dimmed yet when it comes back up there is the Mac, as it was. I always run Disk Utility, or Disk First Aid as it was, rarely a problem. A few more cents on a bit of extra capacitance and and spike protection has easily paid for itself.

Do Macs have better components, yes!

  4. Look shoopoo, the components aren’t any better. What your paying for is a better OS, and you are also paying into what amounts to a profitable stock if you own any. Keep using your windows boxes. Someone of your “High intelligence” just wouldn’t make it using OS X.

I would really like to believe that you have all those mac boxes, it’s just that I can’t. If you would just admit that you don’t own any Apple OS unlimited macs, you wouldn’t have such a hatred for Steve Jobs. I think what happened was that you tried to make money on Apple stock, lost your ass, and then you have spent all this time being upset with yourself for not knowing much about making money in the stock market.

And of course lest we forget about all of those awful things that your father did to you during your teenage years and also that first summer home from college….. It’s not your fault you didn’t do anything wrong. BUT, I don’t blame him for being upset that you kept taking it out of your mouth.

    Late.

  5. Mac hardware is still vastly superior than the PC budget junk you buy on the street corner.

I have used Mac now for 22 years and never had a hardware problem…. never!

Show me one PC fanboy gamemastur@ator that can say that.

PC losers who come here to post look so pathetic!

  6. Shoeman, you dig your own grave with your argument.

If, indeed, Apple is using nothing but the same standard-issue internals as all the commodity box proliferators out there, how come Apple’s machines run rings around them? Ohhhh, it’s the OS, stooopid!

You wonder what Steve is charging extra for…try OS X, try aesthetics, no viruses, no down time, productivity, peace of mind, ease of use, and, lest I forget, COOLNESS! In the immortal words of Wanda Sykes, “Yeah, I said it!”. COOLNESS! What the hell is wrong with being COOL in 2007/2008?

(In my best New Jersey/New York accent) “You got a problem wi’dat??”

    Peace.

  7. Macs might use similar parts to PCs, but they’re engineered into unique form factors and more tightly integrated with the software, not to mention the software being superior. Therein lies the value-add, which Mac users obviously are happy to pay for. Anything less is a hack job, or worse, Windoze.

  8. COOLNESS! I

    Wooooo Hoooo We’re all cool!!!!!!

    try OS X

Yeah well, ALL PCs will run OSX. As I have mentioned several times, Apple need to add a module to it’s Macs that serves no other purpose than to force it’s OS to be Hardware limited….

    try aesthetic

Gawd, Users ALL over the world will gladly pay 20% for a real pretty computer. Jesus!

If, indeed, Apple is using nothing but the same standard-issue internals as all the commodity box proliferators out there, how come Apple’s machines run rings around them?

Ahhh, because they don’t. That’s the usual fanboy nonsense. I have a Pentium 4 right here running OSX 86 10.8 that will blow the doors off of my “Real” Intel Mac Mini..

It’s all the same junk PERIOD. Apple charges more for a “Gorgeous” box full of last years hot components, and an OS crippled to only run on it…

  9. OK, you wimpy fanboys, I’m going to set you straight once and for all… behold, The Shoeman Manifesto version 1.0:

Let me tell you losers something: I’ve been building my own PCs since the late 70s. I’m in my 50s now, and I know a WHOLE LOT more about computers than the mess of you. I’ve BOUGHT a whole BUNCH of Macs too; I also bought my wife a big ol’, gas-guzzlin’, environment-hating HUMMER – suck on THAT you bleeding heart liberal MORONS! And it ain’t nobody’s BIZNESS wot I do with all my computers OR my dough!! You dang liberal fanboys tryin’ to tell ME – THE SHOEMAN – wots I can and cain’t do with my own money! You cracks me up!!!

Sure, I think OS X is great – that’s why I’m installing it on all of my personally made, cutting-edge, massive cojones PCs… and boy, do I LOVE UPGRADING my PCs with the latest, greatest hardware, something YOU FRIGTARDS will never do in a MILLION YEARS!!! Your Macs are nothing more than pretty, shiny TOYS you idiots drool on and think are so great… why? Because STEVE SAID SO!!! Your all so BRAINWASHED by Steve, it’s a hoot!!! Fortunately, I’m smarter than the rest of you and I keep my wife and kids on a SHORT LEASH, so there’s no possibility of them joining your stupid CULT!!!!

Woooooooo Hooooooo I loves me some Steve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MY GOD, I LOVE EXCLAMATION POINTS – CAPS, TOO!!!!!!!!!! YOU’RE ALL IDIOTS!!!!! GOD BLESS AMERICA, A LAND WHERE A MAN CAN BUILD HIS OWN COMPUTERS AND CHOOSE HIS OWN COMPONENTS FER CHEAP AND DO WHATEVER THE HELL HE WANTS TO WITH THEM – INCLUDING MAKING A TOTAL ASS OUT OF HIMSELF!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO I’M THE SHOEMAN, I’M THE SHOEMAN, NOBODY, BUT NOBODY, BEATS ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    except my wife…..

  10. Jeopardy

    What is the MacMini?

A headless low-end to mid-range computer by Apple.

I prefer working, playing and love to avoid reconfiguring my computer – something that seemed constant with Win95, 97 and XP. The MAC platform SIMPLY works. And OSX with a MAC machine has been extremely reliable (like SGI – Apple once was making military grade machines). My experience with MAC is 22 years now. Apple is it 4 me.

I love reading all the reviews and the comments.
All entertaining. Keep on peeing on each other guys.

    Hahhahahhaha

  11. Like anyone here cares what Shoeman says.

WOOHOO! YOU GO SHOEMAN! IMPRESS US WITH YOUR DUMB SARCASM! THAT’S SURELY CHANGING MINDS HERE AND MAKING US REALIZE TYPING IN ALL CAPS PROVES OS X IS INFERIOR AND WE’RE ALL BRAINWASHED!!!!

  12. Sorry shoeman, Mac hardware is better than PC hardware.

That’s why I have Macs from 1999, 2000 and 2001 which all run faster and better today with OSX than they did on the day they came out the shop.

Tell me PC hardware compares and I laugh at you. The Windows PC business is about volume and zilch about quality.

  13. “The Windows PC business is about volume and zilch about quality.”

It’s well known that Intel has a special production line which produces better quality processors just for Apple. The same is true of hard drive, memory and LCD manufacturers. And the people who manufacture Macs for Apple don’t build machines for other people, they just concentrate on making high quality Apple product.

Is this true? I’m not sure it’s that well known, but I’d certainly like to believe it.

  15. “a “real” Mac is nothing more than an overpriced version of what everyone else is selling with a TPM chip added to allow it to run Apple’s Hardware Limited OS”

The only problem with this is that MacOS X doesn’t address the TPM hardware.

Or are you confused, thinking that EFI is “a TPM chip”?

    It isn’t.
