Apple offers iMovie HD 6 for free to iLife ‘08 owners

Apple has released iMovie HD 6, which was previously distributed with iLife ’06, as a free download for those who have purchased and installed iLife ’08.

The minimum requirements for iMovie HD 6 are:
• A Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G4, G5, or Intel Core processor
• 256 MB of RAM; 512 MB recommended
• High definition video requires a 1 GHz G4 processor or faster and 512 MB of RAM
• Mac OS X 10.3.9 or Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later; Mac OS X 10.4.4 recommended
• Mac OS X 10.4.4 (or later) required for themes, real-time video effects, and audio effects
• iLife ’08

MacDailyNews Note: Yesterday we reported that Apple’s new iMovie application lacks support for G4 Macs, so this helps G4 Mac owners who’d like the rest of iLife ’08 (iPhoto, iDVD, GarageBand, iWeb).

  1. well its not apples fault that IBM couldn’t create a mobile version of the g5. The fact that they couldn’t is what prompted the intel transition. The situation was unfortunate, but what are you gonna do? Those of us with g4 PowerBooks should just sell them quick while we can still get something for them. I have a 12″ g4 PowerBook and its dog slow compared to the MacBooks of today. I’m not at all surprised that iMovie 08 won’t run on it.

  2. amid all the whining by people who should just stuff it, is the good point about dropping an audio track. i haven’t used it yet, but while everything else seems like either an improvement or a reasonable trade off, that is unfortunate….

i for one know i use the multiple tracks often. glad apple is letting everyone have a choice by releasing a download, but they really need that other audio track in my opinion.

may have to look into FCE.

now, if you really think that you should be able to process video in the latest apps on a processor that not the 2duos, or duos, or G5, but one incarnation even further back…. well, what color is the sky in your world? lets see, my G4 1.2 eMac is, what, 4 years old? seriously you thought that chip was going to keep up? how old is that chip?

yeah, i know they sold them just 18 months ago, but maybe you missed the whole thing where moto and then IBM screwed Apple over on their CPU development. it was in the news. look it up.

MW: maybe Apple has to drop a few things to move “forward?”

  3. My sincere thanks to all posters here who have bought and used the new apps. I will be glad to wait a bit to see how this all shakes out. Seems like a simpler iMovie is aimed at the casual users (like me) and will encourage the more advanced to move up to a pro app. Why are some so quick to complain? Spoiled by the magic Apple are they?

  4. the first g4 computer was introduced in 1999. the g4 is a dinosaur. i had a 1.25ghz powerbook g4 that i used with imovie – it was passable at best. i imagine the top-of-the-line 1.67ghz pb g4 would have been nicer, but not by much. it doesn’t surprise me that apple dropped g4 support for imovie 08. it probably would have been too much for the old chip to handle.

i wonder if i could get away with a side topic on how much i’m pissed at apple for not being able to run imovie 06 on my pismo…

but seriously. i love my pismo, but i don’t expect anything out of it other than decent web browsing and word processing (with the occasional old school game), for which it excels. and, to somewhat support a point made earlier, it’s running OS X 10.4.10. =) regardless, i know it wouldn’t do video editing very well, nor do i expect it would play doom 3 or world of warcraft that well. maybe i should be pissed at id and blizzard for that??

  5. People, please. No-one here says Apple is perfect. That said, if I think that they’ve dropped the ball on this, I don’t feel the suicidal need to pee all over Apple because they screw up occasionally. What is up with that?

I am a G4 user. I do not make movies. Thus, my interest in this is academic.

However, Apple clearly did not do right by the users in creating an upgrade that was a total rewrite. That shafted people. Bad Apple.

However, shame on you users if you didn’t read reviews, if you didn’t examine the product first, and if you just bought something blindly. You’re stupid!

  6. iMovie ’08 lacks a ton of control features that iMovie ’06 has. While the workflow and real-time scrubbing is fantastic, it looks like this was rushed to market and ended up hitting the streets without Ken Burns effect, Effects, Audio Controls, and the list goes on…

While it shows the user that Apple missed the market with iMovie ’08 regarding feature set, it is a smart move by Apple.

    – It shows the customer that Apple listens and is responsive.
    – It’ll help Apple sell more copies of iLife ’08.

  7. “iMovie 08 is nice if you are starting a new project from scratch BUT if you are doing ANY work with projects created prior to 08 then you are screwed… period.”

So the version of iMovie that you were previously using for the project doesn’t work anymore? When you installed iMovie ’08 it deleted your earlier version of iMovie? No?

Use the tool that works for the job you’re trying to do. You’ve got another one to use that you didn’t have before. If you’ve got an old G4, even if you didn’t have iMovie ’06 before, you can have it now, and do more than you could earlier.

All this whining sounds like a bunch of kindergarteners who missed their nap, and their milk and cookies. Grow up.

  8. It never ceases to amaze my how many people continue to frequent a site they claim to hate and continue to follow news about a company/platform they say is lame. And then they blab on and on and on and on about how awful it is. Talk about masochism.

  9. Like I suggested in the MDN post from a couple of days ago, Apple should have just included iMovie 06 in the iLife box. At least today’s news of giving iMovie 06 to owners of iLife 08 is almost as good. Kudos to Apple.

That being said, this new app should have been given a new name – or, the original iMovie HD should have been renamed iMovie Classic or something like that. Both apps could have co-existed until the “classic” version was dropped in iLife 10 or whatever.

I especially like Texan’s idea that this new app should have been released as a beta in true “Web 2.0” style. But having it as a new 1.0 app in the iLife box would have been almost as good.

  10. I feel like Jobs mislead me. You can not find a bigger Steve Jobs fan than me, but I feel like he blew it with this “amazing” new imovie 8. Compared to the features of imovie HD it STINKS ! The interface is cool. And I was
excited to get the same features from imovie HD in this groovy new
interface. I even bought iLife just to install it next to my versions
of Avid and Final Cut Pro. I was thinking that for quick cutting of
simple projects this would get me there even faster than my pro apps because it has this steamlined interface.
But nooooooo. It is a weakling compared to the old imovie. No decent
audio control, loss of rubber banding and weak video fx. The title
tool has some promise. But I’m angry. I feel like it should have been
named iTube or iVideo or something other than imovie 8 ! Ripped off
and disappointed. I thought I was going to get something pretty
revolutionary, something I could cut with on my mac book pro and my
quad pro at work and was going to lead the charge on a new day
dawning. But no ! I got got this toy. Instead of a brand new and cleaner interface than either Final Cut Pro or Avid boasts – that had some real tools under the hood – we got hood winked.

  11. you people are pathetic. Instead of babbling on here why don’t you write a well thought out, well written letter and use Apple.com’s question/feedback forms to fill Apple’s inbox with your dislike about certain things. They are not reading this site, but they might rethink some of their features if you actually told THEM and not US.

    pathetic whiners, damn.

    Magic Word: placed.

I should have placed my head in a microwave oven then have spent the time reading all of this sh*t.
