Apple unveiled new models of its iPad and a new M4 chip during a pre-taped event on Tuesday. “This is the biggest day for iPad since its introduction,” CEO Tim Cook declared.
The announcement exemplified the current strategy at Apple: Rely on new models of its signature items, rather than transition to the next big product, analysts told ABC News.
While the world’s second-largest company, in terms of market capitalization, risks dependence on longstanding products in a competitive sector, analysts say the approach allows Apple to capitalize upon its loyal customer base and popular devices while it develops new products like Apple Vision Pro…
MacDailyNews Take: Nope, not a “new” product:
Work on Apple Vision Pro began under Steve Jobs – August 23, 2023

Further, Apple has remained largely quiet in the industry-wide race toward artificial intelligence technologies and products.
Many analysts are looking ahead to the Worldwide Developers Conference next month, when Apple is expected to make a “major AI announcement,” Dan Ives, a managing director of equity research at the investment firm Wedbush, said in a note to investors that was shared with ABC News…
Still, the strategy of improving pre-existing products rather than introducing new ones leaves Apple’s long-term vision somewhat unclear, [Ben Bajarin, an analyst at research firm Creative Strategies] said… In the meantime, Bajarin said, Apple will likely draw upon its massive customer base and potential AI-driven product upgrades to stabilize sales.

MacDailyNews Take: The good news is that the average age of outgoing CEOs across the S&P 1500 is 61.6 and Tim Cook will turn 64 on November 1st. 🕚
“Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future.” – John F. Kennedy
Clearly, Apple is not as innovative as it was under Steve Jobs who even started the company’s work on Apple Silicon, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro, but, thanks to Jobs and Cook’s subsequent management of iterations of products and services conceived during Jobs’ tenure, including the retail store buildout which is responsible for a significant portion of Apple’s growth, the company now has more than enough money to make up for Cook’s lack of vision. – MacDailyNews, April 23, 2024
Tim’s not a product person, per se. – Steve Jobs
Until it gets another visionary leader (fingers crossed; Apple’s history has shown – cough, Sculley, Spindler, cough – that the next CEO could be far, far worse than the very competent caretaker Cook), Apple can afford to miss things like generative AI – which they clearly did – and then use its huge war chest to catch up – which they’re doing right now (fun times and 80-hour weeks inside Apple Park!) – and, hopefully, surpass rivals (or at least be as good). Apple will very likely unveil their catch-up work within months (this June at WWDC 2024) in iPhones (and iPads, Apple Watches, etc.) with built-in on-device generative AI and other new AI-driven features. – MacDailyNews, February 14, 2024

terrible product. placing the camera in landscape is awful. i will never buy another one.
Remember when product announcements moved the needle?
Apple needs to focus on the Mac. Although we own an iPad and some iPhones, I haven’t seen much Apple interest in the Mac. Remember, if it weren’t for the Mac, there’d be no iPhone and no iPad. All these Macs with just 8GB of RAM are puny (can you say “ChromeBook”?). We need affordable Macs with optional levels of RAM at AFFORDABLE prices.
Bring back the large-screened iMac, or iMac Pro. And how about an affordable desktop that allows the user to add cards, drives, RAM, etc. Yes, I know the M-Series chips are System-On-A-Chip, but so what. If I can’t get a usable Mac at an affordable price, then Apple needs a new CEO who CAN do it!
I think Steve Jobs would’ve made sure of the above. Remember when the Mac was called “A computer for the rest of us”?
https://computerhistory.org/blog/a-computer-for-the-rest-of-us/
The Mac is doing just fine, Apple has focused A LOT on the line in recent years with the M chips. Yes it’d be nice to get more RAM and storage in base models but it’s not critical. The biggest gap is the lack of a 27″+ iMac. The affordable desktop tinker-toy you want is an infinitesimal market for Apple. They have plenty of “usable Macs at an affordable price” and more sales and deals than ever.
The “computer for the rest of us” is now the iPhone (and has been for close to 20 years) and to a lesser extent the iPad, not the Mac.
Hardware is the least of Apple’s problems though, it’s stale software and no visible AI strategy that’s the issue.
How difficult is it to release a M4 27 inch iMac? No need for AI here, just a new 27 inch iMac. Finally.
Can you explain the attachment to a 27-inch iMac? I’ve never had an iMac and always use MacBooks in clamshell mode attached to the monitor of my choice, which gives the added flexibility of taking the MacBook anywhere I want. If I was forced to have a desktop it’d be a Mac Mini or Mac Studio also attached to the monitor of my choosing.
It just seems like the all-in-one is designed to be obsolete sooner than separate units and if it fails out of warranty you have to replace the entire thing. I do understand the value for schools and offices though that have set upgrade cycles and bulk discounts and support packages. Just my 2 cents.
Some of us just don’t like lap tops.
Because of this I’m no longer a “loyal customer”. A 24 inch computer is NOT a replacement for a 27 inch iMac. Likewise, 4.5k is a step down from 5k. I’m going for a refurbished 2020 27 inch iMac. I’m seriously over Apple’s price gouging .
Over time I expect Apple’s sales to gradually diminish if they don’t come out with new products and if they don’t stop alienating their customer base.
