Blackfriars’ predicts 500,000 iPhone sales in first weekend; 1 million possible

“Some analysts claimed that the iPhone launch would be a failure if Apple failed to sell 100,000 iPhones during the first weekend. Based upon the limited data we have, we believe that number was exceeded in just the first two to three hours. Blackfriars’ prediction is that Apple will sell 500,000 iPhones this weekend, and based upon limited sales rates reported, that number now looks quite achievable,” Carl Howe writes for Blackfriars’ Marketing.

“The only question is whether the demand and iPhone supply is great enough that they might push past the million unit mark this weekend,” Howe writes.

  1. Cubert,

I played with the phone today for about 10-15 minutes @ The Galleria store in Fort Lauderdale.

I immediately went with the two thumb approach and was having issues with typing. Was disappointed, but then realized that if I held my thumbs in more of a straight rather than angled manner I could avoid all the mistypes. I was ecstatic.

Having said that, when typing e-mails the predictive software really made a huge positive difference before I had figured out the whole straight vs angle deal.

Long story short, thumb typing is very much doable and the phone was just short of unbelievable. I’m hoping to get one in a few weeks as a birthday present.

  2. I think the important number is how many people bought iPhones who did not yet own a Mac and/or iPod(emphasis on the word “yet”).
I will stick with more hardware iPhones sold this weekend than software songs sold in iTunes the first month. Anyone remember how amazing that was?
Hopefully, people will see Apple as a more long-term investment now. I am wishing for a radical new iMac before school starts. My dream is a touch screen menu option…sorry, I accidently started talking about computers. My bad.

  3. No heat to report. I’d like to say how delightful talking on the phone is, though. Just having it in both ears with a good mic is so nice.
I have to admit – when ELO’s ‘Telephone Line’ came on, I tried to answer it.

  4. “The entire human poppulation is 300 million people. I highly doubt that apple is going to sell 3 million iphones in one weekend. That’s one percent of the human poppulation.”

Wow. Only off by a slight margin. As was previously pointed out, the US is just over 300 million. The world population is over 6 billion.

In the future remember this, it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth (or submit your post) and remove all doubt.

  5. Consider:
In war games – real ones – not the ones on your cmputer – the ones where real bodies are counted. In Naval war games – when you want to sink an armada – you do not come barging up to the main battle group and fire away. First you fire a test salvo to see how vulnerable the enemy is. (In this case – the iPod) and once you see that vulnerabilities are exploitable to the point of conquest, you bring in the big guns – the ones that will defeat the enemy much more quickly and with a more public victory. One that can be implimented from several points of attack at the same time (including underwater).

Hence – the iPhone kicking EVERYONE a$$ who is not !

    Current battle score:
    Apple – 2
Rest of the technology Universe – Zip!

    MDN= bring

  6. Current battle score:

Rest of the technology universe: Bent over, grabbing their ankles, singing R.E.M.’s “It’s the end of the world as we know it”.

Apple: Saddled up behind rest of the technology universe with a big bucket of Crisco.

  7. @ Crabapple

    > the term you are looking for is the early nineties, since we know that SJ came back to Apple in the late nineties.

No I think I meant the entire 90’s. The “leadership” of a company is not one person, even for Apple. After the return of Steve Jobs, it took a few years before Apple became a well-run company.

  8. I hope MS is watching (I’m sure they are). Ballmer is probably freaking out by now because he’s realizing that by this time next week there will be more iPhones in use by than Zunes in existance…….let alone Zunex in use.

Of course when asked about the iPhone introduction next week, Ballmer and Gates too will probably say something like “Oh, did that phone get released last week? I didn’t know.” Yeah right……..

Time to start throwing some chairs baby….time to start throwing some chairs. Hehehehehehehehehehehehehe

  9. Two points: First, the phone is freaking fantastic. Is it me, or does it seem much smaller than expected? I thought it would be much larger in my hand. (MW: come)

Second, I was cursing the damn iBrick until noon Sunday when I finally got through to the right person at ATT. Nothing more frustrating than waiting in line for 5 hours, getting home, and then starting at a blank screen for 36 hours. And ATT customer service was abysmal until I called the 3701 number. She was awesome. The activation issues are NOT FUD.

  10. ChrissyOne,

Cool. I just listened to Eldorado on ‘iPhone Day’. Took my mind off of the fact that my cell sorta has iPhone-like features. Which means No-Fscking-iPhone features.

Sorry to answer so late. Never went on my iMac yesterday — Cananana-duh Day, doncha ya know.

Then today, I spent six hours clearin’ and cleanin’ my bedroom. I binned that much stuff, and there was enough dust that Lawrence of Arabia would get lost. People always say, “He’s a nice geezer”. “Yeah, and he’s so clean”. But, lately I’ve been ‘kind of’ lazy. Which sorta means, I’ve been a Pig.

Atleast I’m not a Dog. And definitely not a Sheep.

There should be enough references in this post to make Miller walk out of the 4thAve JitB – before eating his Jumbo-J.

1 million may be a stretch based on how many Apple could make, but certainly that number will be achieved as fast as Apple made or makes 1 million (be it this past weekend or in the next couple of weeks). All in all a great opening, with that many phones there are always a few problems, but the press has been terrific, better than I thought it would be after the launch. So Kudos to Apple! Now if ATT service would expand to my area.

It’s a stunning success and no amount of “iBrick” FUD is going to do anything about that.

Everyone knew it was going to be this big of a hit. I’m sad and glad though. I REALLY want that phone…. but, luckily for me, computers are that much better and I got the new 2.4 15″ MBP instead two weeks ago and I think it will hold me over till I can afford this phone. Anyone else agree? Or is the phone that great that I should have stuck with my 15″ PowerBook and got the phone first?

There is absolutely no doubt Apple will sell at least a million this weekend. The Michigan Avenue store in Chicago was swamped last night. I bet several thousand were sold at that store alone last night. But the real scary thing to consider: did Apple pull off the unthinkable and generate over $1 Billion in new sales last night. Call me crazy but it might have happened…..

Am I correct, the main problems have been with people keeping their old numbers, transferring to ATT??

    Jun 30, 07 – 04:17 pm Comment from: Brau
On this note, how many service providers (IE: AT&T) could add a half million accounts in one week and NOT have a few problems. Selling the phones is easy whereas switching from other providers, who typically don’t like letting customers leave, is bound to cause some problems. It seems AT&T is handling it very well, all things considered, and is addressing coverage/bandwidth speed complaints at the same time.

MDN word: North, as in up north we don’t even have access to the iPhone yet. Boo HOoo cuz I’d buy two, even with the activation delays.

    Jun 30, 07 – 04:17 pm Comment from: GlassHollow
I’m still waiting, going on 20 hrs. to activate my iPhone. I’m not keeping an old number, I’m not transferring any number at all. I simply asked for a new number, and I have never ever had a cell phone before this. . . kinda bummed right now.

    Jun 30, 07 – 04:23 pm Comment from: Heroin
    I think 250,000 more likely…1800 AT&T stores x 60 = 108,000 + 170 Apple stores x 1000 = 170,000. Plus they didn’t sell out.

    (written slowly on my iphone)
