Apple’s marketing machine does it again: iPhone generates $400 million in free publicity

“Apple’s marketing machine has done it again,” Jefferson Graham reports for USA Today. “While the biggest names in tech were in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show in January showing off new gadgets and gizmos, Apple gambled it could extract attention in San Francisco for a sneak-peek debut of the iPhone, the combination music player/cellphone and Internet device.”

Graham reports, “Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ bet paid off like a gushing Vegas jackpot. The avalanche of headlines and TV news stories about the iPhone – which hits the market in June – already have generated $400 million in free publicity, says Harvard Business School professor David Yoffie. ‘No other company has ever received that kind of attention for a product launch,’ Yoffie says. ‘It’s unprecedented.'”

“The company’s masterful buzz machine has helped generate record profits (thanks to the worldwide digital music cultural icon, the iPod), but it’s barely nudged Apple’s computer market share,” Graham reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Oh, really? We guess it depend on your definition of “nudged.” Apple’s Mac market share is showing remarkable gains:

  1. $400,000,000 vaporware.

What we have here is Steve Jobs has once again succeeded in selling the blind and simple minded a product that doesn’t exist and convinced them it’s the second coming of Christ. The Macolytes worship and the alter of Jobs while he stakes your beloved company’s future on a product that’s “coming in June.”

This is not the way a modern day successful tech company behaves. These are classic signs of a company painfully grasping at any last bit of life it may have.

You can practically hear the death rattle.

RIP Apple. You modernized the world with your drive for personal computing. Then you sold out, and have ceased to be relevant since. Death comes to us all. It’s unfortunate your’s could not be a dignified one.

  2. “Sir, it’s your attitude that’s at issue. Certainly it’s possible that Macs are defective– but statistically it’s less than other companies.”

Sir, I don’t care about statistics. My attitude is that I if I buy a new computer I expect it to work and not have repeated problems. And if it continues to have repeated problems I want it replaced with another new one. Is that too much to ask? That’s what Dell does if a computer has problems.

I also expect, that like Dell and other PC companies, that my phone support won’t be cut off after 90 days without having to spend another $249 on AppleCare. Again, Dell gives me a full year in the base warranty without charging extra for it.

Maybe Mac users are gullible enough to figure that this is “good” customer service, but as a man who does have self awareness enough to not become a brain-washed zombie, I can tell you it’s not. Apple fooled me once – they won’t do it again. You can term it “pissing in your Cherrios” if you want – I’m just using this site to advertise that Macs are not all they’re hyped up to be. And hoping other people will find it via Google, like I did, and get “the rest of the story”.

  3. wow… not directed at Cowboy per se, but the fanbois are out in force today.

Cowboy… please post the link to your ebay sale on this site when you put it up for sale. First, many of us here would like to purchase a used Macbook, even if it’s had some problems. Also, it proves you are who you say you are. We get tons of posters here claiming to be disgruntled Mac customers when they really are not. I find it hard to believe that you’ve had TWO motherboard replacements on the same machine and apple hasn’t replaced the computer yet. Amazing. I know from experience that when you call Applecare and tell them your issue, and insist on a replacement machine, they will do it.

If you do post the macbook on ebay, and confirm it with me by email when I contact you through ebay, I’ll buy her machine.

    Awaiting your ebay post.

  4. “But in the end, this is a country of laws, and not even celebrity billionaires are above the law.”

If that were true, then Microsoft who is a convicted felon would not have been able to mitigate their initial sentence. They weren’t able to do it in Europe.

  5. “My attitude is that I if I buy a new computer I expect it to work and not have repeated problems”

Of course it is. That’s reasonable. So is the solution to go into a crowded movie theater and yell, “Fire?” Take Jim up on his offer. People should use the tools that work for them.

  6. Who in their right mind would exchage a Macbook for a Dell?

So you have a daughter that doesn’t want something as sexy and useful as a Macbook? Instead she wants a Dell that’s double the size and weight of the Macbook. She prefers ugly remotes to that of Apple?
She doesn’t like built in iSight, magsafe, front row,Slot-loading optical drive?

  7. So Mac and Apple sucks, but then why do you come to a Mac site?

I come here cause i love Apple and want to read about interesting news about the company. I don’t find myself going to Windows sites because i don’t like Windows and don’t care about it. So it makes me wonder if people really go to Mac site even though they don’t like it, or they get paid to come here.

I want to believe they get paid.

  8. Cowpie oh Cowpie,

Stop cutting and pasting your lame posts be a little original man.

Last word for you, Get your Dell and Toshiba Loving ass off this board.

If they are so great go to their boards and bitch how your daughter keeps
dropping her Macbook and they won’t replace it. Perhaps you should untie her
    from the bed?

Please sell you Apple so we will not hear your endless droning anymore.

Just I got my daughter tied to my bed thought

  9. @cowboy

Although I’ve converted around 20 switchers (another just last week who wrote me last week and said ” I LOVE this computer!!), none to return to the dark side there are some people, like yourself that I get a sick glee knowing they are still on a Winduhz computer.

You stay there. Please. I’m glad you love Micro$oft. Somebody has to. Please buy another Dell, or two. Make Ballmer happy.

  10. Cowboy, I must ask you this one question — if you searched high and low for Mac advice, did you ever try the Apple discussion boards? Just about everyone there is friendly and helpful.

Now, about YankInOz’s political fulminations. No, Bush didn’t “change the rules” — Geneva conventions apply only to signatory nations. Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, etc, are not nations, and never signed the treaties. Plus, if you know a little about Islam you’ll recognize that deceit is a tool often used by Islamic warriors. Military tribunals apply to enemy combatants, as they should, and as they have since the beginning of the American republic. As for Bin Laden, his life can’t be very pleasant right now. He’s on the run, probably injured, and seen his organization whittled down and sucked into a death-trap (Iraq). He’s even attacked the Saudis in his impotent rage. So while he’s not caught and still alive, he’s living an awful life. I think we’ve done a good job.

  11. Cowboy didn’t write most of the posts attributed to him.

He couldn’t cuz he was busy cleaning up all the viruses that infested our Windows Vista computer after he visited all his favorite gay porn sites.

I should know. He likes my little pencil. He keeps it in his mouth.
