“Microsoft is losing consumer operating system market share to Apple for many reasons, but most of those reasons can be oversimplified thus: Mac OS is simple, and Windows is complicated,” Mike Elgan blogs for Digit.
“That’s why it may be such a costly error for Microsoft to make the Vista upgrade such a confusing mess,” Elgan writes.
Elgan writes, “Until today, even experts couldn’t tell you off the top of their heads the differences between each of the many Vista versions — or even how many versions there are — or what the basic requirements are for the Upgrade versions. Ordinary consumers are baffled to the point of paralysis.”
“Windows Vista launched with 10 — count ’em, 10 — versions. Instead of giving us a simple new upgrade path to the future, they instead gave us a homework assignment,” Elgan writes.
Elgan writes, “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Don’t buy Vista yet. But if you really must, consider only two of the 10 versions: Nontechnical consumers should buy the full version of Windows Vista Home Premium, and power users should buy the full version of Windows Vista Ultimate.”

Elgan writes, “It’s obvious that Microsoft decided to extract maximum cash from consumers by micro-segmenting the market and trying to provide a different version for each. But they may end up with the opposite result. All this confusion over versions and upgrade policies will motivate unknown millions of consumers to simply stick with Windows XP or move to a Mac.”

In Windows there is this shortcut “Windows + E” that launches Windows Explorer, but I couldn’t find an equivalent for Finder on the internet.

Have exposé clear your screen (F11)
then type <Command N>
That generates a new finder window, viewed all by itself on the desktop.

This is not the right place to post technical questions… because they may end unanswered.
1) One of the easiest ways to access the Finder from any other application is using Command (Apple) + Tab and selecting the Finder icon.
2) Clicking on any visible portion of the desktop (although coming from Windows a doubt you have any!
3) Presing F9 or F11 and clicking on the desktop.
I’m sure there are many many more ways…

Funny, how my “toy” OS does everything I need it to do, from coding PHP, PERL, HTML, and CSS to graphics manipulation to surfing, email, listening to music, recording music, and playing the occasional game or two. Don’t sound like such a grumpy old coot, dood. In the world outside your skull, people use Macs for plenty of things. Meanwhile, you spend your time trying to get your jerry-rigged Rube Goldberg of an OS working and doing pointless geek tricks. Wow. To think that I used to be just like you, a master of obscure and meaningless Windows trivia. Thank God I figured out my time was worth more to me than having some sort of geek cred.

if you’re in another app and you want to open a Finder window using the keyboard, you can use Command-Tab (this cycles you through the currently open apps, which always includes the Finder) to tab to the Finder app and then hit Command-N.
Windows Switcher:
If you click on the Finder icon in the Dock, it will bring to the front any open Finder windows. If there are no Finder Windows currently open, it will open a new one for you.
No keystrokes necessary. Just a single click. (just one of thousands of examples of the Mac’s ease of use)
You can also set the Finder’s preferences to open new windows to a particular spot.

So as a sales outlet for HP, Dell, Sony, Acer, etc etc, how do we know which version of Vista to bundle with a system? What if customer A wants a Dell laptop with only Home Basic, yet another wants the same laptop with Vista Ultimate, how do we deliver? Is the said laptop only supported with a pre-determined version? Can I choose, or must I get the “higher model” laptop to use Ultimate? Will the sales outlet install the OEM Vista of my choosing, or do I have to choose the OEM hardware to match my Vista needs?
I am so confused. If I were to buy a Mac, then I’d be getting OS X 10.4.8 (or wait until Leopard).
Oh what should I do?

@ Windows switcher: As others mentioned, Cmd-Tab works well, and then you may need to hit Cmd-N to create a new window if none are open.
Another way is to go to the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane, go to the Keyboard Shortcuts tab, click the box for “Move focus to the Dock” (and optionally change the shortcut if desired). Then all you have to do is hit the shortcut key (^F3 by default) and then (assuming the Finder is the first item in your dock) hit enter. The advantage of this method is that it automatically creates a new Finder window if none are open. It’s also pretty fast, and being able to change focus to the Dock via the keyboard is potentially useful in other scenarios as well.

Did anyone see the new Get a Mac ad this morning? Take off on Vista, PC guy has a spy looking agent security guard type standing next to him translating everything, and has to ok communications back and forth between PC and Mac. PC says something along lines of it was necessary after doing the Vista upgrade.
I don’t remember seeing this one before and don’t see it on the Apple website.

I can’t believe that if I “built” my own PC, as so many of the “techies” claim to do, I would have to pay $400 extra to get a license to run Windows Vista. I thought the whole point was to maximize performance and minimize cost. With Windows Vista, you’d be minimizing performance and maximizing cotst.
Microsoft sold out to the enterprise a long time ago and who could blame them? They have all these companies locked in (for life?) and can ride the gravy train for years to come. With Windows, there is little personal about the “personal computer” anymore. Whereas, Apple has catered to small business and home users.

No Apple user will deny Window’s 90 % on the business desktop and home use.
But why won’t they admit that the “real entrprise” infrastruture is not Windows.
Webservers are 60 % Apache (Apple built in webserver) Unix and LInux.
Wall street and financial instituitions backends are mostly Unix.
Most large companies HR packages, email and ERP systems are Unix.
Servers that run train scheduling systems, City’s municipal infrastructure and 911 systems are Unix.
I can’t count how many hotels I’ve been too that use 3270 emulation on a Windows machine to acces Unix
servers that manage reservations and room charges.
Many of the DNS servers in the world are Unix.
Apple’s presence in the Hollywood movie and music business is prevalent.
Even if you go to the top 50 world super computers Apple has two spots and Windows none.

Window switcher – switching to MacOS should be pretty painless, but since the approach that Apple takes is sometimes slightly different than Windows, it can be a bit disorientating.
Of all the suggestions, clicking on the Finder icon works best for me. I use that more often than expose. But the cool thing about MacOS X is that there are usually more than one way to do things.

As for quick Finder window opening, I use a wonderful free app called Quicksilver.. keystroke, and type the one or two letters of the app and enter to open. Very fast and very powerful, huge number and range of activities taken care of by keystrokes.. have fun.

The only people I see who wouldn’t want or need to switch to a Mac from XP would be the gamers who prefer to build their own custom gaming machines. Everyone else could switch to OS X. I think most gamers will be migrating to Vista since OS X does not cater well for gamers.

Unix is the operating system technology of the future. Leopard will be certified Unix when it is released (it currently isn’t). That means OS X will be the most popular and sucessuful Unix operating system ever.
Microsoft’s days are numbered. They will continue to bleed market share until their share holders demand change. Microsoft will be broken up and Apple will take it’s place as the market leader in technology and software.

I’ve just read numerous posts from differents blogs with
the “toys” reference.
They can beat their chests about marketshare, (Apple actually measures itself against
Dell 14 % and HP 17 % in hardware sales no OS use) but I don’t understand the toy analogy.
OS X is closer to a enterprise OS (Apache, MySQL, JBOSS, Squirrelmail, Clam AV) then Windows.

I use my Macs for evryday tasks-web viewing,recording hdtv shows,video conversion,etc.
I occassionaly fire up my HP to play WoW with all the graphics bells&whistles; on. I also like to stay up to date on OS’s(which is why linux will be on it soon).
I got the oem version of Home Premium for $119. Some slight hiccups-no driver for my sound card(there is but vista didn’t install) and no clear reason why my hdtv tuner did not work(fixed).
Sorry to say it, but this is still beta software. Microsoft should have taken another year to get it almost right.

From personal experience, the Mac has 50% market share among my friends and family. My point is that the often quoted market share figures include all comptuters, from ATMs to cash registers. I’d venture to guess that Mac’s home market share is closer to 20% than 6%, in the US anyway.

Well, I’d like to thank the windows person for introducing Windows+E. It’ll save me some time.
I’ve had Windows on my desktop at work for 10 years or so. I never knew about Windows+E. This is a problem with windows, in that it has neat features that are non-discoverable. Unless someone shows it to you, it’s impossible to find.
On the Mac, it’s more likely that only very obscure things are non discoverable. Some are obscure/difficult to remember (like capturing the screen or active window, which is easier on a PC), but they are discoverable because they’re at least in the help.
The built-in help says: “To open Windows Explorer, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.”
I usually have windows explorer in a toolbar, along with my frequently used apps (a la dock).
“Hold down the Command key then click on the Finder icon in the Dock.”
To a windows user, that’s “right-click” !
Want to have fun with someone. Fake them out with this Vista Upgrade prank. It simulates a Windows Update, then pretents to upgrage them to Vista. There have been many ways suggested from opening a new window in the Finder from another application. There are many solutions.
For technical info about Macs and Mac OS X see http://www.macosxhints.com or http://www.maxfixit.com or http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
there are others too, but those three are the best.
The main reason why you cannot directly open a finder window from within another application, is because it doesn’t make any sense to do so. Apple human interface is such that it retains focus on the application at hand. If you are working in a document and want to save it, but find that you want to create an new finder window, the open/save dialog box gives you the option to do so. I know it may not seem intuitive to you, but you will get used to it. Afterall the Finder is another application.
If you truly must have the option, you can assign a custom key combination within the Keyboard & mouse preference pane (maybe something like shift-option-command-N) However I am not sure if this will conflict with another process.
You could also assign a (combination) button click to it on a multi button mouse. Or you could make an Apple script to do this and place the script in the dock, or just assign a key combo to launch the Apple script. Something as simple as:
tell application “Finder”
make new Finder window
end tell
Save the script as an application, name it something convenient for you, and store it anywhere you like.
There are numerous 3rd party utilities that will assist you in this endeavor too. Good luck and have fun learning.

So basically, what everyone is saying, is that there is no single key combination to open a Finder window from anything other than the desktop? That seems kind of silly. Windows has that. Sure, you could chalk it up to some kind of “design ideology” wherein users “aren’t supposed to do that” but this user obviously wants to, and it seems like something that would be useful. The Save dialogue in apps is horribly inadequate, i.e. you can’t delete files with it. Sure, I could download and use one of those shareware/freeware programs to do things like this, but that seems an awful lot of effort to do something so simple, now doesn’t it? I can customize Windows up the whazoo with shareware apps too, but nobody ever brings that point up.
Of course it’s true that almost all corporations use Windows for desktop machines (mind you, not for anything serious). And the reason is simple. The decision of which system to use is left to the experts in the IT department. They know that if they select Windows they will need 10 times as many staff than if they choose Mac’s. That was true even before MacOS X came along and now the ratio is even higher.
Obviously they all have an interest in growing thier empire so clearly they would never choose MacOS X. Windows is so complex and hard to keep going that an army of techies is needed. I work in such a place and we have a break-away Mac group with no IT support. Strangely we have less down time…
On a side note. Windows user ever since it started – but now i use a mac, i have less headaches and i am happier. While the Windows IT guys at work are always on alert and stressed out with updates and integration – are miserable.
I wouldn’t say UNIX, LINUX, and OSX are just toys. But they certainly do the job.
Hey, go ahead and buy Vista or XP, that’s cool. Go ahead and proclaim, we are top dog and brag. We Mac users are getting our work done faster, better, and more efficient without problems.
Oh yea, it is good that only 5% – 10% of the world are mac users, seriously. I thrive on others misery.
