  1. Wish Cupertino was on the east coast so that this coverage is 1 hour early in the Central Time Zone and 3 hours for the Pacific Time Zone. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cheese” style=”border:0;” />

  2. It will be 5pm tomorrow evening here in Ireland…
How am I supposed to concentrate on my work the whole day? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

Here’s some coverage in German and French:
    macnews.de, mactechnews.de and macbidouille.com

Can’t wait to see what the extra 30 minutes are for…

  3. Jobs Almighty, why do they insist on letting Gates give these talks? There is no doubt the man is a shrewd business man but he’s also a world class putz.

Mac4life, favorite blurb from the column: “Gates offered slim pickings there: IPTV, TV via the Internet, for the Xbox 360 gaming system and a high-capacity computer, using Windows Home Server software, that will bring corporate interconnection to home computing networks. In the Microsoft tradition of product announcements minus the products, both are coming out later this year.”

  4. I’ll be somewhere in the audience…they’ve moved the Keynote from the usual Esplanade Ballroom to Moscone West (across 4th Street from the main Moscone complex) so they can accomodate more people without having to use the remote viewing rooms they did last year (those were set up in North Hall, and North is being used for exhibits again — it’s like we’re back in the Golden Age of Mac).

    Looking forward to coming home and reading all the takes… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  5. Wow, what a piece of crap CES Keynote. Literally, piece of crap.

Windows dude: “Look, I can use a Xbox controller with my PC to view virtual maps” “Cool, ain’ it?”

Windows dude: “Look, I can have real video as my desktop wallpaper” “Cool, ain’t it?”

Windows dudette: “Look, I can play “UNO” (her favorite game, btw) with another gamer on my Xbox” “Cool”

Windows dude:” We’re No. 2 in mp3 players!” “Gonna sell 1 million, too” “Cool”.

Bill Gates” “Now, you partners, go forward and innovate so that we can incorporate it into our products and claim it as ours or maybe we’ll just buy you out.” “Thanks…..SUCKERS!” Enjoy the CES. Good night.”

  6. From the blog…

“Instead, the crowd got the head of the sponsoring Consumer Electronics Association lauding Gates’ charitable work and showing a retrospective of all the wacky, “humanizing” things he’s done at past CES shows: dressing up, and dancing, as Austin Powers, for example.

Gates’ lack of news or sagacity was doubly troubling for the elaborate protocol required to get in, including making people sit in the auditorium 90 minutes ahead of the speech – without so much as wireless connectivity so they could make use of the time. “

MS and Bill Gates have no taste. No taste or class. I sometimes wonder who are the true cultists. Apple fans or Windows fans. At least Apple delivers on its vision, MS and Bill Gates instead exhort you to drink the kool-aid inorder to distract you from your impending tech nightmare.

  7. Paul, Google is your friend… Try “World Clock”…
It starts at 9am (Tues) in SFO, so that would be 6am (Wed) here in NZ, so probably a couple of hours earlier than that in MEL… 4am on Wed in Melbourne.

  8. Big news is Steve retiring or “leave of abscence” as they call it…the one more, one more thing.
First the one more thing to get people buzzing, then the one more thing of him retiring.

2nd big news is lack of any really new products (lots of updates) – as in where´s the iPhone that has been rumored for years? It could be the “first” one more thing – just a prototype to be okayed by the FCC, but not ready for 3-6 months.

3rd big news is Apple stock drops like a rock on the Steve news….no matter how much he says how much is in the pipeline.

  9. Good morning fellow Apple enthusiasts! Man what a day! The sun’s shining, birds are singing…there’s something special in the air, and I’m not talking about the after effects from my dinner last night. I’m so excited, thank Jobs I’ve got a busy morning to help the time go by.

    Have a great day everyone!

  10. I am stunned at the number of posts on here this AM (EST). WTF. Get back to work you slackers (joking for those who haven’t had their morning coffee yet).

    Can;t wait!

And of course the stock will drop…it always drops right after. Then it bounces right back once all the short sellers make their cash.

  11. errrrr…..OBill-Wan Kenobi

It seems that there is insufficient Midochlorians in your blood to support either your writing or emoticons but not both. I think you meant the french word Voila and not Viola, the violin-type instrument

    peace….

  12. Slow start this morning. Hope Steve’s Mac didn’t crash – he was probably running something in Parallels and got a BSOD ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  15. Jobs: only talking Mac today…

I thought: Damn. So much for the built up rumors.
Then His Steveness started talking about iTunes, AppleTV, and I was like “whatever happened to only talking Mac??” Perhaps there is hope for the new widescren iPod.

    …Reloaded…

*WHAM!!* Widescreen iPod with touch controls

    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> Steve likes to mess with us.

  16. “Accelerometer – knows if it’s in landscape or portrait position”

What if you lay it flat on a table? What if you lay it flat on a table (or a lazy susan) and then spin it? Those are things that I would have to try just to see how it reacts…

  17. Too bad he already talked about iTunes. The fact he played a Beatles tune on the iPhone could have been a taste of something music-related to come. Unless…

    And

Gates must be crawling under a desk somewhere, Ballmer tossing furniture left, right and centre and Allchin anxiously waiting to buy his Mac when the Apple Store opens up ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  18. i dont like this iphoto bs. wtf needs to be reinvented about phoning?!?! if it will feature a fold down menu of things to say (it would know what we are talking about through voice recognition software of OS 9). LAME I THINK.what was the last time something revolutionary came with two megapixel camera. NEVER. built in spekaer, woohoo.

  19. “only talking about Mac” probably meant he’s not going to talk about Windows screw-ups…after all, he’s only got two hours, not the whole day…

Spouse is going to want to head up soon so we can hit the exhibits…but dang I can’t tear myself away from here… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  20. Once the RDF dissipates, what’s the real difference from the dozens of GSM, MP3 and GPS enabled PocketPC’s out there? I’m “Pocket MacOS” is nicer than “Windows Mobile” or whatever it’s called – but will the Apple price premium be justified?

  21. Speaking of doomsayers:

    From: Don’t pass the koolaid

    Jan 08, 07 – 05:17 pm

Ok, I’m so sure he won’t announce an iphone that I will stop posting here if he does!

Time to put up and shut up.

    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”hmmm” style=”border:0;” />

  22. Anakni — expect plenty of help from 3rd party manufacturers; someone’s going to come out with a stylus, possibly even as part of a case/stylus combo…stylus might also be good for folks with hand disabilities…

  23. Remember…..: Let’s have a new Mac announcement, Steve, what the hell? Who gives a flip about the friggin’ phone and iPod, I use computers for work! not play!

iPhone is a Mac. Read the live feed: iPhone runs on Mac OS X – five years ahead of everything… It’s a palmtop computer mainly for playing media and communication, but it also runs Safari and Dashboard.

    justme2: Shopping list:
    * iPod widescreen
    * iPhone

You are in luck, they both are the same device. You save money.

  24. The iPhone is even more amazing than I thought. About the only thing I got wrong was that it is actually going to be called the “iPhone.” I was sure Apple would leave “phone” out of its name to emphasize that it’s much more than a phone. It should be called “Macpod.”

    So, how much…?

  25. scroll up…I called those prices…

First mistake…this costs as much as a Mac Mini. Great phone, but you gotta wonder if it is great enough.

I guess I’m looking for a Wii instead.

second mistake….nothing ’til June…they should have come out in October and said there will be no announcement in January

third mistake….Cingular…unless they are selling them unlocked at the Apple Store

    watch the stock tank

  26. Keep in mind that Cingular will subsidize those prices for people who sign up for 1 or 2 year contracts. Ever try to buy one of those $50 RAZR phones when you are already on contract? They’ll charge you the full $300 or more. Apple priced the iPhone to match the other smart phones on the market, so expect out the door costs to be about $200-$300.

  27. Expect sometime later this year other cellphone companies to be begging to get on the bandwagon…and you can’t stick a Mac Mini in your pocket and make a phone call.

Also I’d expect Cingular to make it very attractive for folks to acquire one of these, with lots of extras included…

Looks like big news is name change, not departure of Steve — nothing to see here folks, move along…

And no 12inch MBP, at least not yet — there may be some grumbling that the keynote was all consumer stuff, nothing for the techheads…

  28. “most disappointing MacExpo ever?” sheesh! there’s no pleasing some people! iPhone speculation has run rampant for a couple of years – and when it’s finally debuted (way cooler than anyone predicted), the reaction is… “meh.”

  29. And then they shoot themselves in the foot.

    1. This is not revolutionizing the mobile phone market…it does not change the cell phone paradigm…it is EXTREMELY cool, but a 2 year contract for the privilege of these prices…

    2. Not many people are going to shell out $600 for anything they find at Cingular. It may actually be worth that, but charge that money for an unlocked phone and let us choose the GSM network.

    3. Cingular is truly awful and that experience will slime up the iPhone. Can you see the support at your local Cingular store?

    4. Something not mentioned is that all that data costs money…if this qualifies as a Smartphone, then it is a reasonable $20 for unlimited data. If it is considered a PDA, then you are talking $45. If it is a tethered device (a computer), then unlimited data is $60. This is ON TOP of your voice plan.

    5. And finally…six month vaporware.

I’m afraid this thing is the next Cube…brilliant design and features but won’t sell to the general public.

  30. Let’s face it, as great as the iPhone looks, in the real world, it will never be THE smartphone unless it features some sort of integration (or at least basic compatibilty with) Microsoft (ugh) Office. You need to be able to open and edit Excel and Word…of course, Keynote compatibilty would be cool…whatever happened to iWork 07? or iLife? or Leopard???

  31. I don’t even care about a phone, and I had tears in my eyes–tears, I tell you, looking at those photos. Maybe I won’t get one “soon”–partly because I recognize that I’m too plugged in already with my laptop. Or is there such a thing? But I know I will eventually. Really, the most exciting thing for me was just the (typical Apple) combination of audacity, elegance and innovation in that iPhone interface. And the brilliance of bringing Google, Yahoo and Cingular onstage and on board. So much for Microsoft saying just today that Apple “doesn’t partner well.” I’m just a girl geek, but yeah, I’m impressed. And the name change makes sense. “Computer” is SO 90’s . . . . Well done, Apple!

MDN word: good. And it is all . . .

  32. Hmmm…could Steve be holding back on new computers until Leopard ships? Maybe that’s when we’ll see a 12in MBP and some of the other rumored stuff…

And I’m not ready to rate this as a “disappointing” Expo — I’ll wait and see what some of the featured products on the floor are…

  33. Cool phone. I’ll buy an unlocked one from Europe next year. Apple TV, so what!

What about Macs? How about iLife 07, iWork 07, OSX 10.5?

This should have been one of those one more thing announcements latter this month. The keynote should be about Macs.

  34. There IS no one more thing.

The reaction from me is “meh”, because I wanted to see something great and new Mac-wise. The iPhone is great and all, a fantastic device indeed, but personally I wasn’t looking forward to that. Now everything we got was iPhone and Apple TV. And the Paramount partnership.

No new Macs, not even updates? No Leopard? No new iPod?

Maybe this (the omission of Mac and OS X news) was a deliberate move from Steve, to put the emphasize on “Apple Inc., the makers of all kinds of multimedia devices” instead of “Apple Computer, the makers of, well, computers”.

  35. It’s going to take a while before I can get an iPhone – long enough to see a number of carriers scramble to get on the bandwagon. Phonemakers will be scrambling too … ’07/’08’s going to see interesting developments.

  36. For people expecting more from this Macworld Expo, has there ever been an expo where Steve announced many revolutionary products at once? Apple always releases “insignificant” upgrades and updates before and/or after the expo and reserves the expo for the biggest announcements to get the most bang for the buck. It simply makes no sense to release a bunch of other products ATM since the hype for (Apple)tv and iPhone will drown the news. It makes a lot more sense to release newer (non-iPhone) iPods and Macs later to give them more visibility because Apple always relies on the initial impacts of such announcements.

Personally, I think Apple would have an Apple event before the month ends.

  37. Apple did say that 2007 was going to be exciting. And we’re only 9 days in, so maybe a special event will happen every month? That would keep people excited all year long. I’m excited to see what else will come out, including Leopard, new mac’s, etc.

  38. “So when are we going to hear all the folks who predicted Jobs’ leaving issuing their corrections? I’m waiting… (crickets chirping)”

Leaving, dying, arrested . . . blah, blah, blah.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for admissions of stupidity. Cowards have no honor. Obviously, Fraud (the troll)really was one.

Speaking of crickets, did anyone record Michael Dell’s earthshattering speech?

    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue wink” style=”border:0;” />

  39. And what a great time to be long on AAPL.

Okay, so I had a lot to do at work today, so I couldn’t spend the usual 80% of my time watching MDN and the keynote. I’ve been mostly out of touch since the keynote ended, but I have it cued up right now, a beer in hand, and I’m ready for the show.
Tell me, did all our trolls disappear?
    Oh ZT, where art thou?
    Don’t Drink… You thirsty yet?

It’s nice when you can be totally anonymous, that way when you turn out to be CATASTROPHICALLY WRONG no one knows who to point at and laugh.

Anyway, great day for the Mac community, kids. Counting down the days until the iPhone goes on sale, and Steve builds me a 20″ MBP. ^_^

    -c

MW: ‘when’ (all else fails, hide like the coward you are)

  40. I read a theory on another site: it’s possible that iWork ’07 and iLife ’07 will have features that take advantage of some of the new features in Leopard, so Apple may hold off rolling those out until Leopard is ready to ship. And as I mentioned earlier, perhaps they’re holding off on releasing new computers until Leopard’s ready, so they can ship the new computers with Leopard already installed instead of forcing new users to buy a computer then install a new operating system first thing…
