Laying odds on potential Steve Jobs’ Apple ‘Showtime’ event announcements

“Apple’s having another one of its famous, Steve Jobs-hosted events in San Francisco on September 12, with the event slogan (“It’s Showtime”) drawing extreme attention. What’s up Apple’s sleeve this time? Here’s what the smart money is betting on,” Christopher Null writes for Yahoo! Tech.

Null’s odds:
• iTunes Gets Movie Downloads – odds 1:5
• Apple Set-Top Box – odds 2:1
• Apple ‘iPhone’ – odds 15:1
• Cube 2.0 – odds 40:1
• Something Lame – odds 5:1

Null writes, “Don’t forget that it’s almost certain that Apple will announce more than one of these things, in addition to the usual stuff like iTunes software updates (“Now you can turn volume up and down!”) and various upgrades to old hardware. A 24-inch iMac has already been announced, as well.”

  1. Wait…I take that back.

A moment ago, I got a notice saying the Music Store was being updated and the moniker “It’s Showtime” when I tried to access the Mini Store. Now it’s back to normal. Can’t seem to get through at all to the main store though.

  2. My prediction is the ability to surf the iTunes Movie Store from your sofa through your large screen TV using nothing but the Apple remote. Find a movie you like, view the trailer and a few video reviews before selecting BUY or RENT with one click. A message on your TV reads: “You have 7 minutes to make popcorn before the video is ready to watch.” ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  3. That this will be as stupid as the announcement about the HiFi…..

Who cares if you can get videos for your iPod? if you can’t take them on a plane, or it sucks the battery down to nothing in 60 minutes, or you can’t stand watching a movie on a screen the size of a PSP (assuming they launch a new iPod design today) then there is no point. I think we would all be better off if Apple stuck to Mac stuff and left the iPod as a kitschie little accessory/peripheral.

Just my 5 cents. (inflation, you know)
