Apple tests new modular Apple Watch face for watchOS 27

The new Modular Ultra watch face takes advantage of the large display, using the outermost edge to present real-time data like altitude, depth, or the passing seconds.
Apple’s Modular Ultra watch face

Apple is testing a new modular watch face for this year’s watchOS 27.

Each year, as part of its watchOS updates, Apple introduces new watch faces — either with the software itself or alongside new hardware. Recent additions include Wayfinder, Modular Ultra, and Waypoint for the Apple Watch Ultra, along with broader lineup options like Exactograph.

For watchOS 27, code-named Orchid, Apple is testing multiple new faces. One in particular stands out: a simplified take on the Modular Ultra design.

It has the same large clock as the Ultra face but removes the option for a big complication in the center, the row of three smaller complications above the time and information placed around the bezel. The result is a large clock that fills the top two-thirds of the display, with a row of three smaller complications beneath it.

The move appears aimed at bringing a version of the Modular Ultra experience to standard Series watches, offering something less dense and more approachable while still giving customers useful information at a glance.

MacDailyNews Take: We’ve long used Apple’s “Modular” watch face, with customized complications (Music, Workout, etc.), so we’re excited to see what the company comes up with when simplifying “Modular Ultra.”

  1. I like “Modular Ultra” the way it is which is the way I wanted it to display especially having spent hours tweaking the complications ‘just so’.

Maybe I will be fortunate in that this will be a separate version of the Modular Ultra watch face and Apple won’t decide to remove the original Modular Ultra, erasing all of my work.

    sigh I’m not too hopeful.
