Report: Apple to debut wireless Bluetooth Mighty Mouse soon

“Apple has submitted a filing with the FCC for the Bluetooth version of its single-button right-clickable mouse, the Mighty Mouse. The new mouse will be exactly the same as the current Mighty Mouse except for its wireless feature,” Tuan Nguyen reports for Daily Tech.

Nguyen reports, “The new Mighty Mouse uses two standard AA batteries and will be compatible with OS X 10.4.6 and later… No release date is set for the new Bluetooth Mighty Mouse — currently codenamed M6, but judging from the FCC filing, the new mouse should arrive soon.”

  1. I love the scrolling action of the pea on my MM.
I find it’s fast and I’ve never had it clog in over 1 year.
Granted the disctinction between the areas of left and right click could be better. Overall I enjoy using the MM.

  2. Apple,

Ditch the MM, and bring back the clear shell/translucent body Pro Mouse that came with the G4 Cube, etc.

If you really need to stick with the MM:

    1. FIX THE SCROLL BALL. Better yet give us some sort of innovative finger reader with no moving parts. Remember, clogged track balls are the reason we have optical mice today.

    2. Make it a real two-button mouse. None of this side-click BS.

    3. If it has to be wireless, give it good battery life. Hey you could really be innovative here & have the mouse be powered by the wireless signal, RFID-tag like. Not possible? Optical mice themselves weren’t possible at one time either.

  3. I gotta Agree with mr. Reese. I’ve got a BT Apple mouse, and I love it. I’ve got 4 rechargeable AA’s, and a tiny little fast charter. After about a 2 hour charge, the 2 batteries will last me about 2 weeks of 8 hours a day, every day use. When they die I just swap in the other 2, and I’ve got 2 weeks to remember to bring the dead ones home and charge them up! I’ve got pretty much the same setup for the wireless keyboard… except the 2 week cycle is more like 3-4 months.

  4. I tried a Mighty Mouse once – it seemed like an ok mouse for a time – a few days, until the problems became apparant.

First, before you can click (either right or left), you need to specifically lift the other finger OFF of the mouse. This is something you don’t have to do when the mouse has two mechanical switches, like most all other multi-button mice.
Second (most importantly): this mouse is not very ergonomic. The shape of the Mighty Mouse causes a person’s wrist to be angled flat – which puts pressure on the carpal nerve. For people that have been typing on computers for their entire lives, like me, and who as a result have carpal tunnel syndrome, the Mighty Mouse is a recipie for wrist pain and finger numbness.

On the other hand, the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorers are designed to allow your hand to rest on the mouse at an angle, keeping the aggravation of carpal tunnel syndrome way down.

Fortunately, the beauty of a Mac is that one can use almost anything he wants to use with his Mac, including a Microsoft Ergo keyboard and mouse. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  5. It’s about time. I notice that even on my PeeCee at work with an InHelliMouse Optical USB MS mouse I still lift the opposite finger when clicking anyway. Guess I am a good candidate for the MM. This InHelliMouse has like twenty buttons on it too. Only buttons I ever use are the left and right click (since you have to with the poorly designed Windows) and the wheel sometimes. I find myself rarely using ctrl-click on my Macs at home since the OS was so well designed.

Only question I have: why did it take you so long Apple?

  6. So let me guess, I’m supposed to pay a extra for a wireless mighty mouse, more money for rechargable batteries, a recharger, open the darn mouse up once a week or two and feed it batteries, have it hijacked, dropped, jammed or bluetooth software fail.

    Just to eliminate the cord?

It’s going to sit on my desk in from of my monitor anyway. Not 20-30 feet back with a mirrored screen projection.

You know what my solution is for wireless is? A USB extension cable.

I got one and my keyboard sits right in my lap, the wired mouse is hooked to the monitor to keep it falling off my desk.

I never will go back to my buggy, can’t use boot key sequences, battery eating, glitchy, insecure wireless keyboard and mouse ever again.

It’s even worse Apple is shipping this abortion of a MM with the dam scroll pea that doesn’t scroll diagonally. It’s incapable of doing so because there is a set of four rollers inside, only two can work at once because of traction problems. If it had eight rollers, then perhaps it could.

Give me a 12 roller removeable trackball type scroll pea, two seperate mouse buttons and that’s all most people need.

  7. DAMN I FEEL AWKWARD???!!!!!

I have a mighty mouse…..uhhhh-have had no problems.
Use it on the desktop and my laptop.

I hate to say this with all the negative statements…..but I really like it.

I do not wash my hands all the time, it is carryed to all the coffee houses I got to, at work, home, and friends-just no problems.

Hate to hear that so many people are having problems……

  8. Considering the mouse is usually never much further than a foot or two away from the computer, do we really need a wireless mouse. Wouldn’t Apple be better to invest time in a wireless ipod. Hell even a wireless isight camera would be better. Imagine being able to surveil anypart of your house without wires. Good baby monitor maybe.

Oh and MDN, whats the deal with all these “Your computer may have a virus…” pop up crap. Is this a Mac site or what. Or are you trying to hammer the point home to the casual windows user who drops by occasionally.

  9. As far as mice go, my fav is the Logitech MX Laser. More buttons than I will ever need and very comfortable to the hand.

That being said, I have been using the Mighty Mouse (with a tail) and have found that it is an “OK” kind of mouse. Ergonomically, it feels better. The “dust in the ball” problem has raised its ugly head and I first followed the “disassembly abd reassemble” solution – what a PIA getting the little magnets back inplace. Cheech! My solution for the dusty ball problem is either use a vacuum to suck it out or canned air to blow it from there – but where will the dust go?

Using the MM is EASY and efficent. No complaints there. I would like to see the right and left “press together” ditties really have some use. Yes, I know they are assignable. Just would like more choices.

Wireless MM – hmmmm – I like the idea BUT I would like to see it made with rechargeable batteries and a “docking” station to recharge when not in use (like my Logitech MX Laser). Makes sense but then the price point would be about doubled. So we have two chances – none and bupkiss.

  10. Just took my MM to the local Apple Store because the scroll ball quit; guy at the Genius Bar suggested a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip, so I’m going to start doing that once a month.

Overall, I like the MM; I have the side “buttons” set to bring up Dashboard so it’s easy for me to check my Gmail inbox widget (and of course the MDN widget!) frequently. Used to have some problems with it weirding out and not recognizing the left click (would act as right click), but the latest OS update seems to have reduced that to some extent.

I’ll definitely be in the market for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse; I’ll see what the battery life is with the high-powered batteries like the Energizer E(2) types, then decide if I want to go with the hassle of rechargeables.

    Just my $0.02…

  11. Without sites like these, most of you guys would surely have to crap in your own pants to feel fulfilled for the day. Unless you’re dumping on some one or some thing, you’re just not complete, are you? Perfectionists that you all are, I’m surprised that you can eat breakfast, get dressed, drive to work, play with your kids, and watch TV when you get home, for food, clothing, cars, children, and contemporary entertainment are all BENEATH you, right?

Nothing, but nothing is good enough for your money . . . and you all could have done SO much better, couldn’t you? Pray tell, is any of you named Trump, or Buffett, or Gates, or Pickens, or Winfrey, or such? As a dear friend used to remind me on a regular basis, if you’re so damned smart, why ain’t you rich? But then you all MUST be with standards as high as yours.

Damn, but it must be hard for you people to exist in this imperfect world. How do you sleep at night?

  12. I use a BT mouse/keyboard and have issues with the mouse most of the time. I use them with Energizer NiMH 2500mAh rechargables and a portable charger.

The keyboard lasts for quite a while – probably a month, maybe longer on a single charge. The mouse chews thru the batteries in about a week, even if I don’t use it (and even if I turn it’s off). The batteries go flat by themselves, which is pretty poor form (flat in a week or so??) Sometimes the mouse baulks at freshly charged batteries – it’ll flash the light but not move, or it’ll just flash and then go blank. Either way, I have to swap them out and start again. Or recharge both sets twice in a row (this is prob. b/c it’s a cheap-ass charger)

To be honest, the keyboard I can live with changing/charging batteries for, but the once every week mouse change is annoying. It really needs a cradle and a built-in rechargable battery, which of course, leads to cables which is probably why Apple chose not to do things that way.

  13. > I am sorry to say that the mighty mouse is poorly designed. Indeed, a member of my family recently purchased a 20″ iMac but he could not stand the mighty mouse. So, he purchased a Microsoft optical mouse to replace his brand new mighty mouse.

I like Microsoft’s mouse products too. I have the most basic Microsoft optical mouse (two buttons and scroll wheel that is also a button), and it is great. However, I think the current wired Mighty Mouse is a fine design as well. Unfortunately, I hate the short life of batteries in any wireless mouse, so I will just stick to a mouse “with a tail.” If I see any wired Mighty Mouse sales on eBay, maybe I’ll pick one up.

  14. This is great news.

I am shocked it took Apple this long to come out with a bluetooth version, frankly.

But with that said, I am glad to have it coming soon. It’ll go nicely with my new Mac Pro.

  15. I feel that I need to give my opinion on the usb Mighty Mouse. I have two and I think they are great. I think the side buttons are a bit touchy. I have them set as the app switcher and I like to have the mouse tracking slow (mainly for photoshop). So I pick the mouse up a lot and many times I inadvertently bring up the app switcher. Other than that I think it is great. But I did give up on the right click so I can’t counter the issue of having to raise one finger to get the right click to work. I do remember though in my PC days I think I did raise my index finger anyway. It is funny though how I never missed the right click. My non-mousing hand is always at the keyboard anyway since I use as many shortcuts as possible, so it is no big deal to have to hold the control key.

I really have not experienced the problems some people have with the scroll ball. I think it is great and I use it all the time. Scrolling left to right and somewhat diagonal is a pretty good deal for me (especially in Dreamweaver and TextWrangler). When it does clog I unplug it, turn it upside down and roll the crap out of that ball. So far it has worked every time. And I tend to work through lunch so my fingers do get sticky.

But I do think the BT mice are way too heavy.

  16. USB keyboard and mouse required for setup? What if you purchased the wireless option for your iMac? I have been waiting since the wired Mighty Mouse came out for this but for some reason it seams I may not be able to use this unless I borrow someone mouse and keyboard?

  17. Never mind all that, what about the squeak my MM made from day one? It was so embarrasing having a mouse that squeaked and the whole office can hear it!
Had to do major surgery and lots of hitting and squeezing until my MM finally gave up its squeak…

  18. I love the bluetooth Mighty Mouse. I also love the original Mighty Mouse. I have not had any complaints about the original, except that I wanted a wireless one, and now I have one. The scroll ball is perfect, the simplicity of use is also perfect, as well as the preferences that can be adjusted, if wanted.

Bluetooth is plenty safe for me, and it is less than complicated to set up.
For people who by their first computer from Apple, and have it shipped with a Bluetooth Mighty Mouse from the factory, they should expect it to be pre-paired, and ready to use out-of-the-box, however.

The only possible drawback is the lack of an Apple-branded charger.
But given the ability to use any type of AA battery, and to use just one at a time if wanted, definitely keeps the Bluetooth Mighty Mouse at a great price-to-value. (It’s worth it.)

Plus, I already have plenty of AA batteries, and chargers, just laying around already, from the digital camera and other toys in my household.
