  1. I came in the office yesterday after a one week vacation, and my machine will not start up. All I get is gray screen. No Apple logo. No spinner. Anyone got a fix for that? ‘Cause I can’t download a damn thing at this point.

    DiskWarrior. No Joy.
    TechTools. No Joy.

    Crap.

  2. This fixed a problem I had with my Verizon wireless EVDO card (PC 5220). Whenever I used it after having my PowerBook (Al 15″) connected to my 23″ Cinema Display, the whole computer would freeze whenever the card was turned off or whenever the computer attempted to sleep.

  3. Rasterbator,

That only happens to me when i boot up with a cd in the drive that the puta doesnt like, usually one made by microsoft!!

Try holding down the mouse button to eject anything in the drive that it doesnt like.

    Busta

  4. Rasterbator…

It sounds like a bad ram chip to me. I had this happen on two different macs of mine over the years. If you have more than one ram chip in each, start by taking one out and rebooting, then the other ect.

I even had a ram slot on my old G4 350 go out on the mother board, when I finally figured it out I just ran with three slots of 256 instead of 4.

    Hope this helps.

  5. Anyone know if this does anything about Macbooks freezing for a couple of minutes at a time, and suddenly going into kernel-panic type fanblasting status while supposedly sleeping? (Put my Macbook to sleep and in my bag on the train this morning, when I took it out of the bag the fan was going full blast and the machine felt like a burning piece of charcoal.)

  6. Rasterbator,

As Jim said above it sounds as if it may be a RAM problem, you may also try resetting your PRAM for in fo on how to]http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238″]to do this can be found here[/url]

Running FSCK, would also be a good idea, this can clear up a lot of startup related problems, to do this can be found here. (FSCK is simmiler to running DiskUtility without actually starting OS X )

to do this can be found here
Let us know how you get on,
    Regards.

  7. If your computer is five years old or older, check the battery. I had a similar problem on a G4 tower, and putting in a new battery seemed to clear it up. On the other hand, some people say taking out the battery for a few hours can fix things, too (without replacing the battery, which, in my case, tested fine).

  8. on the mac pro 15″ the double-click (two fingers on the track pad) has been added, previously only macbooks and macbook pro 17″ had this functionality. To enable go into system preferences mouse and keyboard

  9. Static Mesh,

That vulnerability seems fixed. This wasn’t a security update, though, but maybe it came with some security fixes.

On another note, scrolling in Safari is less smooth, and I just doubled my RAM today to 1GB. Has anyone noticed scrolling-related issues in 10.4.7? The “Smooth Scrolling” option in Appearance preference pane doesn’t help.

My machine is slow, though… 400MHz PowerMac G4, but scrolling was smoother before 10.4.7. Weird.

No other issues. All is well.

Or reset the Power Manger and you only have to wait a few seconds!

The battery is a good guess. RAM failures usually (but not always) produce an error message on the screen on a power-up.

BTW, reseting PRAM, as someone else suggested is mostly just Voodoo.

  11. OpJ,

What probably happened is that you MacBook didn’t actually go to sleep when you put it into your bag, then it got really hot, because some process kept going that made it really hot and in the bag it had no venting.

    This happened to me once.

  12. All you folks happy that Mac OS X feel’s “snappier” it’s just a simple pre-binding rebuild that occurs after every OS update. You just haven’t done one for some time yourself that’s all.

You can invoke a pre-binding update yourself, search Apple for OnyX and run all the “Automation” and reboot.

    Tada, your snappy again.

  13. Well, Ampar, SJ is going to preview Leopard at WWDC in August, so I guess that means she’s, um, well, starting to show… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

    (I know, I know. I couldn’t resist…)

  14. “Tada, your snappy again.”

You leave my snappy out of this.
Besides, I heard that Static Mesh had a 2 Thz grid running that would shame SkyNet. Delusional AI nets count!

    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue wink” style=”border:0;” />

  15. “audio playback in QuickTime, iTunes, Final Cut Pro, and Soundtrack applications…”

I just finished installing the 10.4.7 update on my 12″ powerbook g4 (1.5 ghz) and I had REALLY hoped that Apple would restore midi importing capability to itunes and fix the “sound balance” problem that has been plaguing os x users since at least 10.2! I still get a -50 error when trying to convert midi to mp3. Yes, itunes used to be able to batch convert midi files. Unfortunately, I cannot test the sound balance issue until it the sound balance problem occurs. So obviously, I cannot reliably report on the second issue.

BTW, I recently sent feedback to Apple regarding both of these issues. At least they recently did something for us ppc users regarding the slow superdrive issue. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

If Apple doesn’t fix the midi and sound balance problems asap, I may have to ihit someone!

pre-binding is a thing of Panther and older. Tiger has a totally new linker and dynamic loader and does not do pre-binding anymore as before. AND it is faster than Panther, but you all have noticed that already.

Tiger does not need to do the pre-binding anymore. This is the reason why now when you install something or do a OS update you notice that the time spent on “Optimizing the OS” is much shorter. One reason is that pre-binding is something of the past.

  17. Ampar,
Stop thinking “decimal” and start thinking “serial”.

Tiger was introduced in … April? May? That’s about one major update every other month. At that pace we will see 10.4.8 in August and 10.4.9 in October. Which would be the end of the line, were these numbers “decimal”. They are not. With 10.5.0 due to be announced in January (to ship in February?), we could still slot 10.4.10 in for December – the system allows for it.

Of course, chances are good that Apple will do its best not to confuse the vast majority of people who are under the same mis-conception as you and stall -.8 until September and -.9 until December. No great need to bend too many minds – or explain the same story over, and over … and over.

  18. @Ampar – Luckily Spock had a brilliant idea on an old episode of Star Trek when the ship’s computer took control of everything. Spock just spoke the words, “Computer – calculate π to the last digit”. Computer goes berserk. Problem solved. I always keep that one in my bag of tricks in case an OS update goes awry. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

In other news – Russian Professor memorizes π to 1 million digits:

  19. ^^^ Also note “Fun Stories” section in the right side bar:

    • 10-year erection helps man earn USD 400,000
    • Men with biggest reproductive organs all live in England
    • Some perverts live happy lives in overcrowded buses and trains rubbing against young women
    • US forces to attack heterosexual soldiers with homosexual bombs
    • Pop singer Pink enjoys the nipple piercing (pics)

    Pravda = WWN?

  20. Pre-binding will indeed run in Tiger, when you add “debug” as:

    update_prebinding -root / -force / -debug

I just switched to Tiger at 10.4.6 from 10.3.8 fulltime after one year of problems with Tiger updates “fixing” things. I was running 10.4.3, 10.4.5 experimentally with 10.3.8 fulltime, + Yellow Dog experimentally on 2 drives.

If I ever get time to get Linux right (and if its possible) its Adios to Mac and Windoze. This is what happens to old NeXT users, who foolishly expect OS X to even remotely approach its reliability.

  21. My iBook G4 has been showing the spinny thing since I turned it on agan after downloading the 10.4.7 update (and iTunes and some Airport stuff I’d been skipping until I got broadband).

It’s been about an hour now. I take it from these comments that this isn’t normal. I’m off to hard reboot.
