Apple’s redesigned MacBook Pro will be significantly lighter than the current models, Bloomberg News’ Mark Gurman reports, on top of the touchscreen and OLED display already expected.
In his Power On newsletter, Gurman says Apple has reengineered the interior, miniaturizing parts and rearranging components so the computer is much easier to carry. He does not give a new weight. The current 16-inch MacBook Pro weighs as much as about 4.7 to 4.8 pounds, compared with 3.3 pounds for the 15-inch MacBook Air, so a real cut on the larger Pro would be obvious in a bag.
The machines are the first MacBooks with a touch screen and the first MacBook Pros with OLED, which Gurman has previously described as tandem OLED. They are also expected to be thinner, swap the notch for a Dynamic Island, and use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Gurman says they are being tested with macOS 27.2, which is already in beta, and that he still expects Apple to introduce them in October or November.
Touch is meant to sit alongside the keyboard and trackpad, not replace them. Software changes tied to the new display include controls that enlarge after a tap, menus that appear near the finger, and support for scrolling and pinch-to-zoom. The OLED models are expected to sit above the existing MacBook Pros and cost more.
