I agree with ERic:
people relate to applications by name rather than operating systems. “Do you have “Word” or “Are you on MSN?”. This should become “Do you have Garageband?” and “Are you on iChat?”. Leading to: “What? they’re only on the Mac? Well I’d better get a Mac to fit in”
Apple promoted the name “iTunes” then, once it became available “iPod”. These are the keys to recognition. I don’t even know what the name of the iPod OS is called!
I think the video “Mac OS X Tiger: A Closer Look” shows that the OS X can make a “wow” factor even on video. Apple should use similar video in their ads. These new ads are funny, but a bit arrogant and not exciting at all. Will somebody get interested in Mac based on these ads and go to the store to find out more? Probably not.
Imagine Ford and Chevy doing the same type ads (Ford: “I get 24 mpg”, Chevy: “But I gotta diesel”.) or BMW vs. Mercedes or Bud vs. Miller or Nike vs. Adidas.
You think anybody is going to go buy one product over the other based on two guys talking to each other? No.
Worthless ads to secure the Apple customer base and stop defections from Apple. As you can see above, All Macaddicts here are praising the ad campaign.
There´s a whole lot of things one can do in the PC world that one can´t do with Macs:
http://tinyurl.com/jbgh2
Lots of DIYs out there and all making PCs. Apple will never get these tinkerers to switch over. I made my own PC (son has made 2) and it was lots of fun and a good learning experience.
Yes, I own an iMac – don´t flame me.
I love them all.
(Speaking as a guy in the biz.)
These ads are targeted at teenagers who are having their first computer of their own. These people need to be made aware of the shortcomings of the OS they’re used to and that there is an alternative at all. Basically, that’s all you can do with a tv-ad. For the rest it’s not that important. Existing Mac users must at least not hate these ads, and what Joe experienced PC user thinks of this is irrelevant, because he will stick with his PC forever.
These ads are awful. They are just to arrogant and are trying too hard to be cute.
They are pointed at the converted already. PC users get up and go to take a piss when these ads come on.
———
I notice you didn’t say that the ads were fraudulent or dishonest. Big deal. People get insulted and they get up and take a piss. IT’S ADVERTISING. Advertising is not supposed to persuade people, it’s supposed to remind people that (in this case) Apple makes computers.
The sales pitch comes much later, when open-minded people check out the website or ask around, or go to an Apple store.
You sound so hypocritical, you want Apple to make a Mac ad that is.. let me get this straight… NOT insulting to 95% of the population stuck on an outdated creaky virus-riddled OS that they got because they didn’t know OS X existed? How exactly would that play out…
Preaching to the converted? They don’t preach to anyone. The purpose of these ads is to grab PC users and give them a shake, that’s it.
Of the few that check out the website, even fewer will believe half of Apple’s claims, and fewer still will get a Mac. This is the way it works.
Note: Mac Arrogance? When about 50 million people have iPods, that old cliché doesn’t really fly. Less and less are people averse to considering Apple products (duh!)
Fake Mac Realist,
Go and buy your 3rd party hardware conglomerate machine who, like you, is forced to jump through the hoops of a 3rd-party monopoly swiss-cheese software conglomerate.
Don’t forget to purchase and install all your Norton and Symantec stuff first thing. Then go out and purchase multiple apps that still don’t equal the iLife suite. Then download the Google desktop search stuff to attempt to counter Spotlight. Then download Konfabulator and search through all the many attempts at desktop digital clocks to attempt to get anything close to Dashboard. Don’t forget to get on your knees and install your 3rd-party speakers and also to plug in your mouse directly to the lower back of your 3rd-party conglomerate tower instead of directly into your keyboard. Then, try your best to get rid of all the pre-installed 3rd-party software that you don’t need but, on second thought, you may just use it later, so cancel that.
Then, make sure your firewall is set up. Last, but not least, connect, download, and install the latest daily patches and especially Internet Explorer 7 to plug up some of the swisscheese holes. And don’t forget to never click your attachments, you uneducated PC weenie troll!
Georgy Porgy – FUD. FUD, FUD.
Did you know that Windows owners buy Macs then come to this website? We know Windows; don´t go passing your lame Windows 95 experiences off on us.
Did you know Steve Jobs recommends putting Windows on your Mac? He made it so your computer can run Windows XP.
I saw the new “out of the box” ad last night on the Daliy Show.
“Yet more vain attempts to get people to purchase these overpriced, overheating, and slow computers. People are beginning to wake up and understand that Apple produces crap and that virtually any other computer company has a superior product. With Apple stock crashing on practically a daily basis even the Apple maniacs realize that the only product Steve Jobs has is the iPod. Guess we will have to see how long it takes Apple to rename themselves iPod inc and drop their useless computer products.”
Thank-you for playing another episode of ALTERNATE REALITY! becasue your so far from it it’s funny!
“I should just point out that if you are using Windows on a Mac legally (meaning that you bought a full retail license) then you will have support for it from Microsoft.”
If you are using Windows legally, Gates calls you a liar and like Colonel Klink demands to see your papers every freakin’ time you boot Vista.
It’s great that MACREALIST is too chickens*t to even use his real name – seems very typical of someone who is really a WIndoze user.
What’s the matter little boy? Mommy wouldn’t give you the money to buy a MacBook Pro? You had to settle for a 20GB hd Sony? Jealousy will get you nowhere.
I’ve been using Macs and Windows PCs for many years, just like many other posters on this site and in the world, and IMO Macs are more reliable and produce better results. In fact, even M$ knows it or else the PC version of Office would be as good as their Mac version.
I was almost SURE we were gonna see some Keynote action when he pulled out that pie chart.
Oh well, maybe actually seeing the os is a thing of the past
I really like the new Mac, but I hate the ads. Sorry they just make me want to laugh.
I’ve been using a Mac recently for testing purpose only. The only thing I noticed is that Mac is really sluggish comparing a PC. I know this may make a lot Mac fans angry. Hey, just want to be fair. You can go to try a PC. Test for yourself.
