  1. MDN, you’re a bit harsh tonight. I don’t disagree, but someone might think you’re biased. This is after all a Fair and Balanced Web site… Right? Oh, I guess the rotten tomatos thrown at me suggest otherwise.

I work in a ubiquitous Windell/IE megacorp and it amazes me oh few people can even recognise a Mac let alone understand the nuiances of a secure and usable browser.

    And these are WEB DEVELOPERS!!!!!

I’ve got a 867MHx 12″ laptop because it so grossly outperforms the 1.8GHz WinDells they’ve imposed on us. The network is proprietary MS. Our servers get cracked monthly and our email servers fail at least once a month due to virus traffic.

This is all considered normal. A serious problem to say the least and the higher-up see the costs. It was amazing how hard it was to get an iMac in the testing lab. I did and still do a good deal of cross-platform and cross-browser testing.

I don’t think this situation is at all unique. MS is quite secure for another 10 years with customers like these. Balance will come to technology and we are seeing the beginning, but it will take some time before we all understand the importance of balance.

  2. Oh and I also LOVE tabbed browsers. JavaScript debugging is a big plus for us web developers too.

Wintel users also often have no idea that more than one monitor is an option. My work space has a 17″ CRT, a 22″ CRT and my 12″ PowerMac. It often takes quite a bit of explaining that the monitors are not each a separate computer. Again these are programmers and web developers.

Ignorance is bliss. Especially for Microsoft.

  3. you forget that the reason that all microsoft products are full of security issues is simple.
very simple with out all the holes / backdoors how are they (MS) going to spy on their users?.

  4. the fact that microsoft is already stating it in the negative, such as “no less secure than other browsers…”, is an indication that they are not so sure themselves of IE’s security status.

  5. Have you guys noticed that whenever someone from MS openes their mouth, they put their foot in it? This company is a public relations nightmare.

Microsoft can be compared to the USSR of the IT World.

    – You should be happy with what we give you, anything else is just propaganda propagated by the enemies of the state (state of MS).

    – We only ammass money for the good of the people and we have their best interests at heart

    – all pigs are equal just some are more equal than others.

don’t you find it ironic that Apple uses George orwell’s 1984 for the most famous IT-Advert of all time, and Microsoft is behaving like the pigs in the same Author’s book Animal Farm?

  6. “Paul Thurrott” writes: “I’m contractually obligated to tell you guys that IE is pretty good too, though.”

The REAL Paul Thurrott says “Friends don’t let friends use IE.”

    Give the man SOME credit!

  7. If IE is so secure, how is it when our customers switch from IE to Firefox, their Spyware problems plummet to almost non-existent? I get so many calls about Popups and spyware, and every customer I talk to, I tell them to use Firefox instead of IE (after of course, telling them about Spybot and Ad-Aware). Unfortunately, most of these customers call when it’s too late, and their computers are already unusuable, and they can’t even download Firefox. It’s unreal the disasterous level this problem has gotten to, and I completely blame Microsoft for letting it get this far.

Tabbed browsing is a wonderful feature, and ever since Safari showed me how nice it was, I won’t use a browser that doesn’t have tabbed browsing.

  8. Even Netscape has tabs! Windows people should consider Netscape as an alternative to IE if they don’t want to try Firefox. I’m sorry Netscape has been allowed to languish by AOL because, even though it is somewhat bloated, it can still be a better choice for some people. Yes, for Windows, Firefox is faster. But, for the Mac, I believe other Mac browsers are better than Firefox.

Interestingly, Windows does not appear to me to have as many browser options as does the Mac. The Mac currently has a minimum of NINE browsers that I can quickly count and I’m sure I’m missing others!

  9. On a somewhat off-topic note, does anyone else have the cursor disappear *sometimes* when viewing MDN with Safari? I’ve had this happen before but it was months ago with a different computer at a different company. When you move the cursor up around the bookmarks bar toward the left to go to the back or forward buttons the cursor often, but not always, disappears, but it ONLY happens on MDN. It’s fine if you move the cursor to the top from the right side of the screen but not the left. Weird! Am I the only one?

  10. Disappearing cursors?

Must be radioactive fallout from Microsoft’s research facilities.

Seriously, though, I’ve never seen a company make such a big noise about sitting on its laurels as MS does.

  11. i love tabbed browsing. i use both safari and firefox at home and they both work great. at work, being on a pc, we only have explorer. often i find my self right clicking thinking i can open up a tab but realize that ie doesn’t support tabbed browing. that just sucks. long live tabbed browsing!! ben english needs to get a clue.
