Apple’s iTunes Music Store sells 100 millionth song

On July 1, 2004, Apple announced the sale of 95 million songs via their iTunes Music Store and began counting up to 100 million songs sold by giving away 50 special 20GB iPods – one to the purchaser of each 100,000th song downloaded between 95 million and 100 million songs.

Today, Apple sold its 100 millionth song at approximately 1:24 am EDT, according to the company’s count of songs sold on the iTunes Music Store on apple.com.

“As we cross this historic milestone, we want to thank our customers, the artists and the music labels who have embraced our dream for iTunes,” said Steve Jobs, Apple

  1. Once again skeptics, Apple has again changed your world. This is yet another opportunity for you to swallow the pride, jump off the status quo bandwagon, and take the leap into the world of continuous quality innovation.

  2. “Dang — I couldn’t figure out how to phrase it.”

I think the word you were looking for is “Extra.” As in, “I’ll give two PBs and a 325i to anyone who can put an extra zero on the right side of my bank balance.”

You also never specified a year or whether it worked. I saw a PowerBook 100 (circa 1991) on eBay for $9.99, but time is running out.

  3. iTunes Music Store crashed on me twice at the all-important few minutes prior to reaching the goal. I was, like all of you, watching closely, sending a “Tell a Friend” every now and then, to cover all bases. My son and I debated whether the count being displayed was “delayed” like the stock market, so didn’t represent a true count at that moment. So I hit “Purchase music” and it gave me an error # 5555 and said try again later. Well, I tried again later, and got the same error. So I waited a few moments, and the 100Mth song was up.

Then, because I really did want the songs, I looked again, and they were gone from my shopping cart. (It was Bach’s inventions) So I selected them again, and I got a message “You have already purchased this selection. If you do not see them, try selecting Check for Purchased music from the advanced menu.” That’s where they were, all right, and they began downloading.

I wanted to share that, since I had never seen a crash before.

    … before the decimal point.

Okay, I have a pen here. Where is your checkbook balance? How many zeros would you like? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  5. “… before the decimal point.”

Well, he did mention integers only. Yeah, I know, four cents is an integer.

If anyone hasn’t noticed, they posted the names of all the winners and the songs they bought. Two entertaining ones:

James Saunders, #97,700,000, won by downloading Combat Baby. That’s the free song! How ^&%^&ing; lucky can you get?! You go, download a free song, and boing! Won an iPod!

Robin Ferrier, #98,200,000, won by downloading “John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmid”. Okay, if it were me, that would be one purchase I would not like to be made public. It’s like being the 1,000,000th customer at the Adult Bookstore. Yeah, I’ll take the prize, but we don’t need to take any pictures, thank you very much. ;^)

Was this contest available to foreigners? No one outside the U.S. won…

  6. I don’t balance my checkbook, but thanks for that, Nobody. My Cash Mgmt. Acct. doesn’t come with a checkbook and that’s the balance that counts. And before you add an extra zero just to the left of the decimal point, I’d sell securities valued at 100K with a guaranteed 100% return.

Yeah, the contest was open to all those who could access iTMS. Can you download a free song multiple times? Maybe Saunders was doing that?
