UK advertising watchdog: Apple Power Mac G5 can’t claim ‘world’s fastest personal computer’

“A complaint against Apple’s claim that its Power Mac G5 was the ‘world’s fastest personal computer’ has been upheld by the UK’s advertising watchdog. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said that the G5 was not the fastest computer ‘in all circumstances for all applications.’ Two other complaints about the G5 ad were rejected. The ruling comes as Apple rolled out a new range of G5 computers,” BBC News reports.

“The ASA said the complaints against the G5 magazine ad came from members of the public in Middlesex and Monmouthshire. There were three objections to the ad; that the machine was ‘the world’s fastest personal computer’ [which was upheld], that it was ‘the first with a 64-bit processor’ [rejected] and that ‘the systems built around the G5 can shatter the 4-gigabyte memory ceiling that limits every other PC on earth’ [rejected],” BBC News reports.

“[The ASA] said that Apple was justified in saying that the G5 had the world’s first 64-bit processor for personal computers… [and] also accepted Apple’s argument that the G5 was the only personal computer that could handle more than 4GB of main memory,” BBC News reports.

  1. Well, the average person who sees that ad isn’t even going to think about an opteron. In the same vein they wouldn’t think about getting a dual g5 2.5ghz.

You also have to think about who’s writing the ad. If it’s some local or franchised computer store, that’s not Amd’s ad, it’s the computer stores. It’s not like it’s a national campaign.

Also, they make a windows for the Itanium (intel’s 64bit only processor) and have for some time. So that ad’s wrong on 3 accounts. I think Amd’s marketing department would come up with something better.

Looking at the date on the picture, it looks like one of those “monthly specials” that stores put out. The apple campaign is a national, apple created endeavor, thus the wide complaints. It’s a bit more of an issue when the claim is made by the company, not some small retailer.

The Ad was Run by the UK’s biggest computer vendor(not some small vendor) their yearly sales for the UK are more than Apples UK that’s for sure, and it was a National campaign in most Newspapers.
The heading was “DOUBLE THE POWER” the Ad then goes on to say “Twice the processor” It’s amazing that PC fans disappear up their own A**holes when faced by cold facts do you want the whole AD??

  3. And speaking of outragous wifi claims, have you seen the T-Mobile spots where a couple is in some Greek or Roman Amphitheatre using a web cam to transmit shots wirelessly of the locale to some remote friend.

    1. What ancient ruin in the middle of nowhere has wireless APs?
    2. 320×240 30fps video on a centrino, wirelessly? C’mon!
    3. Who shoots video of a tourist location with a web cam on slung off of a notebook? Ever hear of a miniDV camcorder people?

  4. Intel should have been banned from running those Centrino Ads.
The first one showed a guy on a remote beach in the Maldives or somewhere, picking up his e-mail!!
I’ll bet more people have bought Centrino WIFI and been p*ssed off cos it doesn’t work in their backgarden than those who have been disappointed with the speed of their G5

  5. “What’s up with all this recent English justice Apple bashing? Do we have to cross the pond and kick some butt again?”

There’s that softly-softly foreign policy that makes America such a popular choice for those with a grudge and a spare boatload of bio-toxins…!
