  1. Brushed metal is already in my face all day with Safari, and I really can’t complain.

I like good looks, but I also like function. Safari functions great, so I couldn’t care less what it looked like.

And if I don’t really like it, there’s apps like Metalfilizer from Unsanity that lets me remove the metal.

  2. I d/l 10.2.8 and good improvements. Definately a bit more responsive and quicker.
Panther has brushed metal instead of pinstripes?? Does this include the menu bar?? That would be awesome!!!

  3. Michael,
Could you be more specific so that others (and I) can consider whether we should upgrade now or wait until Apple resolves the problem?

For example, what is your computer, what was your previous version, do you connect through modem, did you enable modem compression and error correction in Modem Control Panel?

  4. Why no G5 update? My G5 has loads of problems that need fixing. None of the major drive utilities will boot from the cd. It’ll be some time before Norton, Tech Tool, and Disk Warror will have upgrades ready. Alsoft told me that Apple did not share the system folder with them so they have to start making an upgrade now. Sometimes, Apple winds up abusing their most loyal customers.

  5. Have a 800 Mhz 14″ iBook w/ 640Mb RAM & Airport – 10.2.8 installed without incident and everything is smokin’ along… booted right back up into Build 6R65. Only frustration thus far is Safari – so beware – this update installs Safari 1.0 (v85.5) and blows away any mods (darn it…)

  6. I updated using software update and on restart, my Power Mac G4 dual 1.25 (fw 800) would give that dreaded note in sveral languages “You must restart your computer now”.

After that happened 3 times and having to hard reboot, it completely froze and all I could do was reinstall the system from my software restore disk. Yuck. But, at least that was an option.

Any body else having this major of a problem?

  7. I installed on an iBook 500Mhz. My connection to the internet (ethernet to LAN) is still OK and I experienced no abnormal problems. I’ll check back if I notice anything bad.

On another note, I just bought a new 12″ powerbook. It should get delivered on friday. Anyways, does anyone know what apple will do when panther comes out? Will people who made recent purchases get a free or reduced upgrade cost?

  8. I installed on my G4 867 Quicksilver about an hour ago. Everything works as before except Transparent Dock. Hope its updated soon. Same on wifes iBook 600. Airport OK; did not have to do anything but start download, wait 20 minutes and re boot.
Tell that to a Windows updater!

  9. For all:

your safest bet with all updates is to use the COMBO rather then the incremental. In many cases quirks have been reported by just re-applying the COMBO (yes, you may do that as it is a force-update) version of the updater.

The incremental would not touch files that in principles have not changed in the new release but they might be corrupted. The situation arises when those files – while coexisting fine with the previous version – suddnely become a problem with the new release.

COMBO is the safest bet (but it is larger – of course)

  10. PS

Apple says in the note that you could have problems if using third-party products that do modify the system in any way. Try de-installing all add-on before the update as use the COMBO.

  11. I always use the OS X Combo update no matter what and have never had any problems or issues. I also always repair permissions both before and after applying it as well. Most of the problems that people run into can be avoiding by simplying doing those things everytime.
