“Apple Computer may be getting into the mobile phone market after all,” Troy Wolverton writes for TheStreet.com. “The company last week filed a series of applications to trademark the phrase ‘Mobile Me’ to cover, among other uses, the sending and receiving of ‘data, images, audio, video and documents … over local or global communications networks.’ The filing suggests that the company is getting ready to dip into the mobile-phone business, said American Technology Research analysts Shaw Wu and Albert Lin in a note issued Thursday. ‘We believe this is further indication of AAPL’s strategic direction to extend its iPod + iTunes and Mac franchises into new business areas including smart phones, value-added mobile content services, and the broader consumer electronics space,’ according to the analysts. An Apple representative did not return a call seeking comment.”
Wolverton writes, “Many analysts have argued that Apple would eventually come out with a successor device, potentially one of its own making. That expectation has been fueled by the fact that the company owns the iPhone.org Internet address… Indeed, a number of analysts and Apple watchers expected the company to announce its own mobile phone at the MacWorld conference this week. Instead, the only new hardware-related announcements the company made at the conference was that it is putting Intel chips inside of two of its computer product lines.”
“In their note, Wu and Lin acknowledge that Apple’s ambitions, indicated by the trademark applications, go beyond — and may not necessarily include — the mobile phone market,” Wolverton writes. ‘We believe ‘Mobile Me’ could also be related to location profiles that could be stored in dongle-type keychain devices or perhaps a future iPod or cell phone that would carry user profiles, including bookmarks, cookies and preferences that would allow people to carry their personalized computing experience wherever they go. We believe this information could be transferred through USB and/or Bluetooth to the host client,’ they said.”

Apple applies for ‘Mobile Me’ trademark – January 11, 2006
Or….could this be a effort at mis-direction or pre-emptition? I mean, how much does it take to register a trade-mark?
Apple is coming out with a phone. Sweet. The marketplace DESPERATELY needs a phone that is actually easy to use. Too many phone jam packed with a bunch of bullshit.
It could also just be an extension of .mac
so curious i typed in iphone.org & amazingly it directs to Apple’s very same homepage. We’re all holdin our breath knowing something kool’s brewing in Coopertino…
I want an iPhone / PDA / iPod now, damn it!!

And so, the guessing game continues. Nice to see some people get paid to guess though.
NO
The mobile market is flooded and controlled by the service providers like Cingular etc., not the device makers.
Since there is tons of devices already, no need for Apple to enter this market only to squeezed out.
By the way Cingular is so dam agressive it’s not even funny, it borders on corporate criminality.
Don’t go into a Cingular store asking about a phone and not buy one, they will send you a bill anyway and god forbid if you accidentially pay it.
You’ll be up $hit creek without a phone, ruin your credit trying to straighten the whole mess out.
FSCK CINGULAR, they are not worthy of Apple and their customer support is the worse, all corporate con artist salespeople.
forget the expo, focus on what was missing, 1st April looks good to me, just get the shares in before the split at 100 and a rush back to 80.
P.S. need some new ads to come out about this time, pleeeeeeese
I would buy an Apple phone. It is a big big market. Much bigger than the iPod market. Apple only needs a small slice to make a lot of sales! It would be good for the brand.
I think, whatever it is, it might be close to being ready. Apple trademarked “Vingle” in the latter part of 2005. The first Vingle showed up in the iTMS this week.
I think Mobile Me will be a service that allows access to your content from anywhere over any type of network using an Apple device. It would be something like Slingbox over the Internet or cellular, but for all your content, not just your TV recordings. The implementation might be viewed as a major expansion of .mac.
This makes perfect sense when mated with Apple’s investment in flash memory, and iWeb. In the long run, most iPods, and maybe iBook/MacBook variants, such as a tablet, will be flash-based. This will limit your local content storage to only the stuff that you must have when you have no network (cellular 3G, wifi, etc). The rest of your content you will access via Mobile Me.
So imagine a Blackberry-sized Mac tablet with a 4-5″ touch screen that has 8-10GB flash, 3G/wifi connectivity (including voice), and the Mobile Me service. With no hard drive, most of the volume can be used to support an 8-10 hour battery.
So will Apple become an MVNO and brand their own cellular network for these devices? Or will they partner with a cell co like Cingular?
Geeze screw the phone idea. If Apple released a washing machine called an iWash we’d all want one of them too? Not me.
“Don’t go into a Cingular store asking about a phone and not buy one, they will send you a bill anyway and god forbid if you accidentially pay it.”
How does this happen without giving you info and allowing them to sign you up? I went to the Cingular store and i never got a bill.
If theres any reason to boycott cingular it’s because their coverage is nowhere near as good as they say it is.
Hammer. I disagree with you often but this time, truer words were never spoken. Cingular is the WORST! Even worse than Sprint and that takes some real effort.
A crappy network is one thing, but even worse is Cingular customer non-service. Double talk, double billing, wrong billing, and a mish mash of technology that is inconsistent and dropped my calls half the time.
Raising the bar? What a crock. They could raise it way up (from where they’ve been) and still be the worst cell phone provider. No wonder Motorola could do no good with the iPod-phone, they partnered with a horrible company. On the other hand, maybe Moto and Cing are a perfect match, two old American monoliths… both suck!
I’d buy an iWash, you know it would be a masterpiece of industrial design, and probably sms you in your ‘mobile me’ when the cycle was done.
I’ll probably take a whole iHouse if they made one.
big1 i had no idea you disagree with me all the time LOL ;^)
Between Cingular’s network and the less than desirable interface on my RAZR, I’d love it if Apple took that part of my life over.
I had AT&T wireless with a great discount through my work – I even got a real sweet deal on a Family Plan. I never had any problems and the user account interface on AT&T’s website was easy to use.
Cingular buys them out, and I have had trouble ever since. All of a sudden I have overcharges I never had. Can’t wait until my contract runs out.
I wish Apple WOULD come out with their own phone, and their own service that went with it.
Love the way every little tidbit is S-T-R-E-T-C-H-E-D out to every little fantasy gadget people have. Vingle created so much buzz about all the magical things that might appear and all it turned out to be was a video and a song! Like someone said, this stuff keeps the analysts in business.

Apple is working on an iPod PDA type thing that is a phone, handheld computer, and iPod that has an isight camera built in that you will be able iChat with your friends that have a Mac, or this device. Also users must have a .mac account to sync everything to the PDA type thing from your computers. This is going to be a great product when it comes out, and its going to be soon. So watch out for this brand new device for Apple. Also Apple is working on their own gameing consol to compete with Sony with their PS3 coming out this year, and Microsofts XBox 360. This will kill Microsoft and 2007 will be the end of Microsoft. But Apple needs to watch out for the next big company that is trying to do everything and thats Google.

How does this happen without giving you info and allowing them to sign you up?
Because they want to check your credit history to decide if a $100 deposit is in order, it’s the first thing they do. But they say it like “Lets see if we can give you a phone first” “Your name, your social security number…” etc.
So if you decide you don’t want a phone it’s too late, they auto-matically entered you into the system like you really ordered a phone when you didn’t.
But they go ahead and put you in, hoping your wife or auto-bill pay will sign them a check.
Got to figure, they got millions of people who browse the stores but don’t make up their mind, even if they can trick a few percentage that’s a substancial amount of new customers locked in a multi-year agreement.
It’s downright criminal or they are working for the NSA or something data mining.
“Since there is tons of devices already, no need for Apple to enter this market only to squeezed out.”
There were a ton of MP3players out there before the iPod, though none with the Apple ease of use. They could very well apply the Apple zen to a cellphone and watch the people flock to it.
I hardly think the carriers would appreciate it though without some kind of deal concerning the iTMS.
I’d gladly pay us$600 or so for an iPhone.

wow… anywhere you go that a contract is in order they have to check your credit. hmmm… when i went looking for a new car and ran my credit at the chevy dealer i gave them a fair amount of info… at the last second i decided against the truck… last i checked.. i didn’t get a bill from chevy. and… after i worked for cingular for a year… you think i would have had someone come back into the store i worked at and complained to me about a bill for just coming in. i never had one of those….. funny… when you talk out of your a$$ it makes a funny noise…. really… that’s all it is.. a noise. if you’re getting a bill you signed something… if people we’re getting bills for checking their credit you’d hear something about it on a national level.. not you talking out your a$$.
oh. i work for verizon now. still have to do credit checks. haven’t had anyone come in and complain about getting billed for us checking their credit. just so you know.
I wouldn’t mind an Apple phone that is a shell that clips in an iPod nano as an accessory.
The shell would give GSM and WiFi support – when you’re in range of WiFi (home or away) it calls over IP, when out of range of WiFi it uses GSM. At home or school, kids could talk for hours for free over WiFi.
A built-in iSight, Blackberry-keyboard, ringtones and games would be nice but not essential.
MW: ‘likely’ speaks for itself!
How did Apple sleep iPhone.COM? It must get Jobs by the short & curlies that they would have to go to a lesser-desirable domain, in fact I doubt they will ever do anything else but use the .ORG domain to point to an iPhone page within the apple.com site.
MacSlate
4″x3″x0.7″ full screen edge to edge/virtual buttons/OS X/Phone/WiFi/iSight
BINGO…APPLE TAKES ALL.

iPhone isn’t a device, it’s a SERVICE!
Apple could add Mobile phone abilities to their Airport card. Then lease high-speed cellular services from a carrier at a bulk rate… even cheaper if Apple offers the cellular company a better compression method. Apple could offer their own unlimited cellular high-speed service for Macs at a very low cost. Video iChat ANYWHERE!!!
How about a bootable iPod with bluetooth video, audio, mouse, and keyboard technologies? A computer that fits in your pocket. Take it to work. Sit at your desk with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor and get to work. Then go home (listen to your iTunes on the way). Once at home, sit down at your monitor, keyboard, and mouse again. You always have your computer and just need the peripherals. You and your computer are now truly mobile — Mobile Me.
Think of it as a wireless and much, much smaller Mac mini.
I had a friend who was billed monthly for 8 months by Cingular for a pre-paid phone starting three months after she discontinued service. She fought tooth and nail with them to get them to admit their error. She finally gave up but refused to pay the seven bucks or so per month that they were charging her for once having had a PRE-PAID Cingular phone. BTW her family now has four phones using US Cellular and no such problems. And the signal/service is great (as is mine).
And if you think they need your signature to start billing you then you haven’t been out in the real world lately. Security isn’t getting better with the switch from cash/checks to charge/debit/gift cards. It’s getting worse! The long distance carriers a while back were getting into all sorts of trouble because of the practice of SLAMMING. No signature required to ILLEGALLY switch someone’s carrier! Reality check: we’re talking about illegal practices here, not legal practices.
As an aside; I had a friend apply for a job with a major retailer that required a credit check. She would not and did not sign her application to approve the credit check. Guess what. They didn’t hire here because she wouldn’t approve the credit check but a month later she got a store credit card meaning that they did it without her approval. Anyone who doesn’t think this stuff is insanely easy to do and that it doesn’t happen every day has their head in the sand.
MDN Magic Word: Clearly – as in clearly some people live in complete security. Everyone else is alive and living on Earth.
I thought that by now, everyone knew about iphone.org. That doesn’t necessarily mean anything though… Unless you also think that Apple is coming out with a new mammal.
…you got to be kidding pda/ipod/phone..everybody thinks this is great idea but no…those things never really work usually only one of the function are anygood..the more crap you put in a phone the more complicated the interface….the harder it is to use..the more battery juice it needs ..the more likely this thing will malfunction …and quality is just going to go down hill for there … it’s not apple’s style …they like to keep there stuff simple …that is how it should be …less is more….maybe a phone/ipod …at most…but why ? there are so many phone compagny..phone battery life is the worse….this is just a bad idea i think… I hope and wish apple doesn’t do it….
I am excited, for no particular reason. I not much of an Apple geek but their products are usually so much further along in design and features.
