New evidence that Motion backgrounds are coming to iPhone 6s/Plus

“Following the apparent leak of iPhone 6s Plus packaging last month, an image purporting to show the front of the iPhone 6s box has appeared on Dutch site Techtastic, following the same design theme,” Jeremy Horwitz reports for 9to5Mac.

“Like the iPhone 6s Plus box (shown below), which featured a gold and black fish that looked almost like a flower, the alleged iPhone 6s box shows what appears to be a partially golden fish against an all-white background, matching the gold or rose gold edges of the device,” Horwitz reports. “Our reports leading up to the official unveiling of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus noted that Apple plans to add Motion backgrounds to the new iPhones, paralleling a feature introduced on the Apple Watch.”

“The Apple Watch’s Motion backgrounds include timelapse animations of flowers, butterflies flapping their wings, and jellyfish moving against black backgrounds,” Horwitz reports. “New backgrounds containing animated fish and colorful bursts of smoke are expected to debut on the iPhones.”

MacDailyNews Take: How about some more masculine choices, Apple? Apple Watch currently offers flowers, butterflies and a jellyfish. That’s not a lot of variety from which to choose, even if you’re looking for feminine imagery. Yet another reason to stick with Apple Watch’s Utility watch face.

  1. Apple kills the high end icons of iOS and OSX for flat…
as some say it eat into some of the memory resources, hmmm
now wait a minute, motion backgrounds by any measure should all be flat 2 dimensional graphics then… or wait again, the new Mp5 video codec is ready for world use.

  2. The idea is nice… but what for?
I mean I love the poetry of the concept. But this is only an energy consuming visual trick with no practical bases.
Perhaps just another way to get an headache within few seconds…

  3. “Skeuomorphism” is a fancy Greek word that means “things look like what they are.” Skeuomorphism makes a GUI intuitive and easy to use, because the icon for a printer, for example, looks a printer, so it is obvious what to click on.

Jony Ive says that making things look like what they are is bad design. So in iOS you get to the health app by clicking on a valentine card, you get to the games app by clicking on the balloons, and you get to photos by clicking on the Home Depot paint sample sticks. Imagine Jony Ive’s living room!

The reason why there’s no skeuomorphism in iOS and OS X; that is, the reason why things don’t look like what they are, and the reason why the UI on the watch looks like a bubble bath is that Jony can’t draw.

Really? One would have to be pretty insecure in their gender or sexuality to feel uncomfortable having a flower or a butterfly on their iPhone. I guess until Apple starts including baseball players, motorcycles and construction vehicles you’ll just have to settle for the gorgeous, striking motion backgrounds Apple has provided. Or wait for the iGenderProgramming app to come to the iPhone.

    1. I wouldn’t have a problem with a dude using a flower on his phone, but MDN is right — there’s a lack of options.

I’d love to have what looks like a morphing liquid silver or gold . . . think Terminator 2-ish . . . .very classy puddle effect or something that ties directly in with the case and my band.

  5. I don’t know how many of you had iOS 6 beta, but the early betas had a feature they later took out, where you could set a panoramic image as your background, and as you move your phone around the background moves along with it. I thought that was totally awesome and was sad to see it taken out (likely for battery consumption reasons).
