Major Samsung Galaxy Note 5 design defect: Inserting ‘S-Pen’ backwards permanently damages device

“The Galaxy Note 5 has a novel new S-Pen slot design,” Ron Amadeo reports for Ars Technica. “The Pen inserts flush into the body, and a spring-loaded mechanism ejects it. As Android Police discovered (and we just had to try, too), the new design isn’t that robust—gently inserting the S-Pen backwards into the slot can irreparably damage the Note 5.”

“The right way to dock the S-Pen into the device is to slide the pointy end in first, but if you slide the blunt end in first, the S-Pen will get jammed in the device,” Amadeo reports. “The spring mechanism that holds the pen in will clamp down on the wrong end of the S-Pen and won’t let go. It is possible to wiggle the pen free from the spring’s hold, but when we tried it, the S-Pen detection features stopped working.”

Amadeo reports, “Apparently once the retention mechanism clamps down on the wrong end of the S-Pen, removing it can permanently break the S-Pen functionality.”

BBC News reports, “In a statement, Samsung said: ‘We highly recommend our Galaxy Note 5 users follow the instructions in the user guide to ensure they do not experience such an unexpected scenario caused by reinserting the S-Pen in the other way around.'”

MacDailyNews Take: In other words, Samsung says: “You’re inserting it wrong.”

This is what happens when beleaguered Samsung doesn’t have Apple’s Jony Ive’s designs to copy.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note5 design is defective.
Because the company is defective.
They peddle patent-infringing, untested garbage to the ignorant.
Do not buy Samsung-branded products.

  1. I’m surprised that this even made it to the press. Normally they never notice things that aren perceived Apple flaws. Second, who really cares? Who has one of these? I’ve never seen one except in the store.

  2. There are going to be many cases of guys doing this just to piss of their friends. “Oh is that you new phone? Hey, check out what I saw on a YouTube video….” Then they hand back the new fubar phone to their buddy. “hahahahah”
