No 16GB iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus, next-gen models to start at 32GB, source says

“Today we want to say goodbye to the 16GB iPhone,” Chan Zhuang reports for M.I.C. Gadget.

“Some Foxconn insiders confirmed that new iPhone 6s (and we think all ‘future iPhone’ like iPhone 7) will have 32GB and more capacity,” Zhuang reports. “We can’t tell you from what Foxconn’s department we received information, but we can only say that the packaging of the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus don’t have sticker with ’16GB capacity,’ but 32, 64, 128.”

“Some sources like MacRumors and Macworld (and others) confirmed rumors about new iPhone 6c with 16GB,” Zhuang reports. “Bloggers think that only new ‘rumored’ iPhone 6c will have 16GB capacity, but all iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be started at 32GB to 128GB.”

MacDailyNews Take: As we wrote on July 4th:

Obviously, 16GB is for a certain target market, one that can live in the iCloud. The problem with that model, however, is that inexperienced buyers and inattentive resellers foist 16GB iPhones on people who really cannot manage to live in the iCloud and therefore could end up hating their iPhone (it won’t update, it’s perpetually packed full and therefore runs poorly, can’t take any photos, can’t download day more apps, etcetera).

Apple needs to ask themselves if the benefits of having a 16GB iPhone (“low” entry price and upselling platform for higher capacity iPhones) are worth the risk of disappointing those who are likely buying their first iPhone. For Apple, the quality of the user experience should always come first.

    1. I think Apple users are getting fed up with Tim Cook’s greed.

He should’ve gotten rid of the 16-GB model with the release of the iPhone 5.

      Now Apple should:

      * Pull the new Macbook from the market and redesign it

      * Can the Apple Watch and cut their losses

      * Completely rewrite iTunes and make that mess called Apple Music a separate misadventure

      * Replace all Macbook screens infected by the Tim Cook ‘use cheap components’ virus

      * Get a new CEO ASAP

      * Buy all MDN fangirls new pink hoop skirts and lollipops

      1. Wow… you must be a brilliant man with an incredible business resume to so succinctly offer such great advice to the world’s most profitable corporation.

Oh, wait, you live in your mother’s basement…

    2. This does not relate to the current article, but would like apple to answer a question. I have iCloud Drive. $3.99 for 200 gigs of back up. The apple store talks for months that it syncs to devices. I have tried many things. The last I was told that I can drag my iCloud drive to pages to sync and get my documents from my phone and iPad. Well today at the apple store in orland park illinois I was told it does not and will not sync until the app is released. It is in beta. I don’t know who to believe. I wish apple would stop worrying about apple watch, apple music, and the gay agenda things and just work on things I have been told many times would work. It seems apple is losing focus on things that used to work. I am a long time customer 55 years old and never owned a pc. Since 1989 its apple for me. Now that its becoming an apple world its starting to be run like a Microsoft or Dell company. I had .Mac then mobile me etc. Come on apple lets get this iCloud drive to sync to my devices. I don’t want my information shared with another party.

Please get to Tim Cook so he can get this going.

    1. The newer larger iPhone models should never have been saddled with only 16Gb. It didn’t even make sense from a typical RAM doubling scheme point of view – 32 to 64 to 128. It was a poor marketing decision and as much as I love Apple they can make mistakes and stuff like this only hurts the fruity brand.

32Gb is a base model that most use for simple use, but with a margin of storage error if they should decide to become a bit more ambitious. Not having a certain amount of reasonable storage available behind basic iOS and basic apps is kinda dumb. 16Gb only kept them corralled in with few options, except to buy a 64Gb model. It also would have the knock-on effect of diminishing or hampering App Store & iTunes sales. So not good for anyone.

It always seems Apple should have made many changes (storage, iPhone size) a year before they actually did.

        1. Yes, it is printed (or embossed) on the box. I’ve never seen an iPad or iPhone with any sort of sticker on the box, to indicate memory or anything else… Not that I recall, anyway.

  1. I still think the phone should allocate enough to system memory that any upgrade of the software over the lifecycle of the phone will not result in a message that the user has to delete something to provide sufficient space for a download and upgrade.

Seamless upgrades are all part of the user experience for a premium product.

  2. Unless Apple stockpiled a lot of 16GB memory chips, we might figure that over time the price of 32GB memory chips would have dropped to the cost of 16GB memory chips. So is Apple that greedy where it needs to keep margins very high to use really low-cost 16GB memory chips for years and years?

I’m sure there must be some consumers out there that will be perfectly satisfied with a 16GB iPhone. Those consumers who only find the need to make calls and mainly use the apps that are already installed. There has to be some consumers out there like that. How many? I wouldn’t have a clue. Apple must be making them for someone. It wouldn’t make sense for Apple to build them just to sit on shelves unsold.

  3. “Obviously, 16GB is for a certain target market”

Yea, the market of people that don’t plan on using their iPhones. (until I get a call from a frustrated friend that now decides they want to do more and can’t)

  4. These days, 16GB simply yields a poor user experience. This is something Apple has always tried to avoid.

My 16GB iPhone 5 was always running out of room. Very frustrating. Went to 64GB iPhone 6 Plus.

If Apple wants to truly “delight” and stay ahead of the curve, a 64GB base model, at the same price point, would do just that.
