Apple Watch teardown reveals pulse oximeter, suggesting future measurement of blood oxygen

“iFixit’s teardown of the Apple Watch has revealed that the sophisticated heart-rate monitor used is actually capable of acting as a pulse oximeter, allowing it to calculate the oxygen content of your blood by measuring how much infrared light is absorbed,” Ben Lovejoy reports for 9to5Mac. “This data would be useful for health and fitness monitoring, but the functionality is not currently enabled in the watch.”

“Apple’s heart rate monitor is actually a plethysmograph — it looks and acts like a pulse oximeter, but Apple isn’t claiming it can measure your blood oxygen level,” iFixit reports. “Why? Beats us. Our best guesses involve FDA regulations.”

  1. Imagine an industry hundreds of years old that suddenly has a new benchmark.

Not being a watch-wearer for over twenty years, but expecting my Watch today, I’m in for some disruption of my own.

    1. Lol, people who hate apple have no money. Therefore they also have no jobs, so nothing better for them to do than steal their neighbor’s wifi to down vote MDN posts from their cheap $300 Windows laptop that’s 4 years old.

  2. SLEEP APNIA – This could be big for snorers, and the sleep deprived, which has proven to cause, accidents, diabetes, dementia, obesity.

It could be the right tool for prevention, not just exercise.

    1. The problem I see with that is that *most* people will have their watch sitting on a charger while they sleep. Not gonna help much then. But I like where it could eventually lead. It is the reason I initially said I wanted two for my wife – one for daytime and one for nighttime. We’ll see!

    1. FWIW, CNBC had Kyle Wiens, iFixit founder, on around 5:30 EST and showed bits of the Watch teardown and various components. No estimate on the component cost but he’s buying an Edition to tear apart to determine how much gold is in it.

Worth watching if you can find it.

  3. “Wonder how far along Google, Samsung, Xiaomi, etc. are with their Apple Watch teardowns?”

Years. In order to duplicate the Apple Watch they will need an:
OS. Google will need 2 years to scale down Android while simultaneously adding Watch capabilities and overcome fragmentation among its manufacturing partners.
PROCESSOR. None of the current chip makers have an off the shelf processor suitable to power something like the Apple Watch.
MEDICAL SENSORS. Need I say more. Apple is at least 4 years a head of the Android community.
