Walmart lowers Apple’s iPhone 5s price to $79, iPhone 5c to 97 cents

“As the release of the alleged Apple iPhone 6 inevitably nears, retailers are dropping the prices of the iPhone 5S and 5C,” Dara Kerr reports for CNET.

“A Walmart spokesperson told CNET that starting Thursday at 9 a.m. local times, the retailer is dropping the price of the iPhone 5S to $79 and the iPhone 5C to a mere 97 cents. The iPhone 5S was previously $99 and the 5C was $29,” Kerr reports. “These new prices apply to all available colors of the smartphones and can only be used with a two-year contract on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, or US Cellular.”

  1. So the discount is equivalent to about 3% for 5s, and about 6% for 5c (compared to the previous price). Or about 18% for both devices, compared to the full retail prices ($650 for 5s, $550 for 5c).

Very few Wal-Mart customers will actually understand this and most will believe that they are getting their iPhone for free, or for very little money. Which is probably quite OK. The main point remains, though, that this “massive” discount is actually quite negligible.

  2. MDN, Please, Please, Please don’t go along with this myth about phone pricing. Can anybody really go into WalMart and buy an iPhone for 95 cents? NO!! You have to sign up for a two year contract. The extra cost of that contract is for making payments on the phone. The actual cost of the phone is very much more. I paid full price for my iPhone at the Apple store. I use it with a month to month provider, NO Contract. In 16 months I saved enough money to break even despite paying full price for the iPhone. Today, I could literally thrown my iPhone in the trash and I will still have saved money compared to the two year contract prices.
