How to turn your Mac into a video surveillance tool with this app

“Using your Mac as a security monitor or surveillance device is an idea whose time has come,” Jeffrey Mincey writes for Bohemian Boomer. “For those of us with a Mac at home, gathering dust while we work and play, turning a Mac into a security tool seems like the right thing to do.”

“Unfortunately, no one can agree on how to get it done. Google’s Nest division bought Dropcam, my favorite security and nanny-cam maker. Now I have fears that Dropcam will be watching me instead of watching my house, and Google will become the ultimate digital Big Brother,” Mincey writes. “So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and put to use some of those video cameras that have been gathering dust.”

Mincey writes, “Enter Periscope Pro [US$24.99], a video surveillance app for the Mac. The app comes with plenty of features but handles multiple cameras, including the Mac’s built-in iSight camera, USB cameras, remote cameras and even IP-based cameras.”

  1. I use iCam for a webcam on my Mac Mini left on in the living room. Gives me live pictures and sound to my iPhone. Also sends motion alerts when my dog or cat go by it.

  2. Anyone have success using a PS3 eye as a security camera with a Mac?

I have a PS3 eye that is gathering dust. I’ve seen several youtube video about getting it to work with the Mac through Macam, but I’ve had little success (the app seems unsupported at this time and unstable with Macericks).
