“While Apple ended up calling its industry-changing smartphone the ‘iPhone,’ Apple considered a few other names.,” Gurman reports. “Our own Scott Buscemi was on the ground at the event, and he has shared the details for this article. Whew! Those all suck! iPhone was the no-brainer choice! BTW, it’s time to rename iTunes! Music is just a fraction of what it does.
and the “phone” is just a fraction of what the iPhone does.
and Mac news is just a very small fraction of the news at MDN.
iTunes is a household name and a worldwide brand, it’d be a MASSIVE mistake to change the name. Any Marketing 101 class will teach you not to mess with a successful brand name.
+1 for “Mac news is just a very small fraction of the news at MDN” They also offer a wide array of ads in every shape size and colour
ads? i don’t see any on my screen
If you use Safari, then turn on your extensions and get AdBlock.
If you are talking iOS, then I am not sure how to clean up the page.
Jobs never considered those names seriously. His method was to pile up as many suggestions and ideas as possible — however funny those could be — and eventually pick up the best variant.
It would be silly if at least a dozen other name variants weren’t tossed out in various brainstorming sessions.
Did I ever tell you about the time I was in a bar drinking Margaritas with Steve Jobs? He thought he had finally come up with the perfect name. He came up with ” AyayayPhone” and liked it more and more after each Margarita.
Yeah, if only to through some misinformation out into the wild.
Steve Jobs did consider one of these names for sure. I worked for a company called Mobi Technologies http://www.getmobi.com and Steve Jobs did call the owner and asked to by the name from the company. I guess it’s wasn’t enough money though.
It’s called “Brainstorming”!
Hey, he actually DID name a computer line “Lisa.” 🙂
iTalk would Of been a good name for the iPhone 🙂
Sorry mate, I’ not normally a pedant, but this one really pisses me off:
It’s “would HAVE” sometimes contracted in speech to “would’ve”
If only I had wood of the finest quality to build you a soapbox to stand on.
I would of had a Woody, but…
Nice link bait, shitbags. The standard design and marketing process where a mulititude of ideas are tossed around and burned away and properties of goods set in happens every gods damned day. But because we are talking about Apple, it’s “Steve Jobs was going to do this” and “Steve Jobs was going to do that”.
The tech press is a cesspool of talentless hacks.
