Piper Jaffray: Android app revenue is 7% of iPhone’s; Apple to retain a 70%+ share of mobile app dollars

“Using data from Apple’s public announcements and AndroLib (an Android app discovery tool), Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster has analyzed the mobile app market and determined that,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

“Since its inception, Google’s Android Market Place has generated about 7% of the gross revenue of Apple’s App Store,” P.E.D. reports. “Apple has about 85% to 90% market share of the total dollars spent on mobile apps.”

P.E.D. reports, “Apple will probably maintain a 70%+ share of mobile app dollars spent over the next 3 or 4 years.”

    1. When the pundits imply that Android is more successful than iPhone because of market’s her, I laugh my ass off.

Android users make price buying decisions, caring much less about utility.

Because of this Android manufacturers make very small gross margins, and developers don’t get the customers they want (the ones that buy additional utility).

Without developers, who put their resources where they will make the most profit, Android will be forever consigned to 2nd class status.

      1. This news didn’t surprise me at all.

Google 2010 app store revenue: Just a tad over $100 million.
Apple 2010 app store revenue: $1.7 Billion.

iOS is killing Android in every relevant financial metric.

Apple makes money on the entire ecosystem. Google is still trying to figure out something beyond their ad revenue.

    1. Maybe they generate revenue by using viruses to retrieve sensitive data from Android owners. Razors and blades as I read earlier today. I wonder how lucrative that strategy might be compared to writing Angry Birds. If it’s big enough, maybe the app developers have to share with Google.

      I’m joking. I really am.

  1. Ha!

we Android supporters love FREE apps. If it’s not really free, unlike iOS we can get PIRATED ONES!

in one android app developer meeting developers said 90% of their apps have been pirated.

(if Google can pirate iOS and Oracle Java and Samsung pirate Apple’s designs, why can’t users buy pirated apps? Google, Samsung and other Android OEMs has shown us the BRAND NEW WORLD of MORAL BEHAVIOUR!)

sometimes you can get pirate versions directly from the official android markets, other times you need to search a bit for the pirated versions. I browse FOREIGN websites and after a few weeks you might find what you want and save 99 cents for the real app. (it take so long because sometimes the LANGUAGE barrier of those foreign download sites is a killer. I once wanted a Brazilian Tour Guide and got an app for Bra SIze… well it was amusing anyhow) …

but I know you apple fanboys are saying ‘PIRATE apps are infested with MALWARE’.

POOH! I say that’s not a big deal, heck even the OFFICIAL GOOGLE ANDROID MARKET has Malware Apps — google doesn’t vet them so what’s the big deal getting malware from overseas?

I actually had a malware pirate app steal all my bank data but POOH! the jokes on them .. I have NO MONEY in my bank account! I live max out on my Visa.

Also all my years of experience dealing with virus plagues on my PC has made me used to dealing with malware infestations. (Apple users are sadly deficient in that area and therefore overly worried about malware).

Besides the SATISFACTION of getting FREE stuff, I get a THRILL every time I switch on my Android phone : I don’t know if it’ll work, if there are bugs or some malware will manifest…
When I switch on MY HEART RACES, MY JAWS CLENCH AND MY AZZ HOLE PUCKERS.. and I know I’m ALIVE.

I be you apple tweebs never felt like that using your iPhones!
