  1. I’m not happy with Navigon MobileNavigator. On mine, the road you’re approaching doesn’t list the name, unless you zoom out. Only then you can see the streen name, but it’ s 3 blocks away.

  2. Considering it doesn’t cost you anything, NavFree is pretty good. It does not require GPS – you can tell it your position, for example – so it is good for the iPod touch as well as all other iOS devices, and it uses downloaded open-source mapping in a speedy and clear way. I believe it is UK/RoI only, though, and the interface is confusing to use.

  3. Please, if you’re using these apps on the road in a vehicle, would you PLEASE pull over when you are fiddling with them? The inconsiderate and downright dangerous behavior from people on the road with their mobile devices is well documented in becoming on of the leading causes of traffic accidents and bottlenecks.

I know everyone thinks he can safely multitask, but you’ll change your mind quickly when some inattentive idiot runs into you.

  4. Side note story.
In my state cell phone use while driving was only a secondary offense for the last few years, it’s changed now.
I was driving and on the phone one day, and a cop pulled up along side me. 2 in the patrol car and both starring at me with disgust and waiting for me to weave in the lane or something. I was done with the call but kept te phone to my ear and proceeded to annoy the cops.
I finally had to look over at the cops and point to the car in from of them…. They rear ended the car anyway. When I stopped I was laughing at them so hard!

Distracted driving can take many forms. Talking on the cell phone is just one portion of the whole statistic.
If I remember right eating while driving still is higher than cell use. And putting on makeup while driving was right up there with cell use also.

But as far as texting while driving… I agree it’s bad.
I personally think those in dash screens for video, should be banned or not able to display anything while driving. Back seat only.

In the UK, driving whilst distracted by any handheld device or whilst using any handheld mobile (cell) telephone is a criminal offence which will normally end up in you getting at least a £60 fine and 3 penalty points (12 points equal a disqualification).

I completely agree with this. Holding and actively using anything other than your steering wheel and other essential car controls is gambling your own life and anyone else’s in the vicinity, when you consider you are driving a 2 tonne lump of metal and plastic at up to 70mph. There are too many accidents caused by people getting distracted – and many more near misses. This includes those distracted by satellite navigation/GPS.
